Where do we draw the line?

I\'ve been to 4 GD\'s myself. I\'ve entered one and didn\'t make the cut. I could see why i didn\'t make the first cut after the fact. Dissapointing but fair. The model that won in my catagory had recieved an honorable mention the year before... the exact same model painted by the same guy. EXACTLY THE SAME MODEL. That bugged me... but the model was better than mine so... what could I do?
I\'ve seen a number of models that people felt upset didn\'t make \'first cut\' or place at each GD competition. I\'ve seen these people take one of two approaches. One: storm off pouting to their friends and gripping on-line. Twp: ask the judges why the didn\'t place (make the cut) and in each case, a judge has given them feedback and a fair opinion to the best of their ability.
That\'s just what i\'ve seen. Rregardless of how hypothetical your scenario may be, there is always room to improve.

it\'s a shit but sometimes you have to stick your head down and get on with it. maybe punch something outside the comp. life aint alwas fair for a number of reasons so you just have to roll with the punches

Although it sounds unfair its the inevitable and is always the case, in this scenario the arguing with the judge didn\'t help and also to some extent the entering of the weaker category.
I have only ever entered GD once an that was when i was 13 in the youngbloods and i was ecstatic when i made the first cut but when i saw the winner i was quite disappointed as imho mine was cleaner neater and overall looked nicer, bu these things happen so i vowed not to be phased by the next entry or anything that happens and take what is given weather this be a category switch etc.
In competitions thats based on personal opinion its always good to keep the judges on your side.

This sort of thing happnes all the time, for heaps of different reasons, but at its core you are talking about the opinion of ~3 people and that is very unlikely to match your opinion.
You just have to learn to deal with it, move on and do better next time.
I suggest posting the mini here, there are quite a few GD losers scoring higher than the winners on here. At least you will get the opinion of a few hundred people instead of just a handful.

I heard it as \"The nail that sticks up SHOULD get hammered down\". Japan can tolerate things (people) who are different but it is frowned upon.
Back to the topic in question. I don\'t know how many other Australians who read this have come to the same conclusions, but i have been keeping an eye on the GD results for several years here and apart from that the same people keep winning (may have something to do with the people who enter....or not) some people win who really shouldn\'t have any chance of winning. Mostly they are in the Young Bloods category but they seem to be relatives or friends of older regular entrants/winners.

I got as far as this and started laughing. Paint what you want to paint and enter it. If it\'s good enough, it\'ll win.
Post some pics of the entry and put your money where your mouth is!
Edit: That sounded harsh - that C\'Tan Nightbringer is excellent, but ATEOTD the judges decision is final. You have to develop a tough skin when entering comps. Just make sure next year\'s entry is even better....
I have a friend, and I don\'t think I talk out of place here, but he is less technically accomplished with a paint brush than myself. There\'s one major difference between us though: Commitment.
He\'s willing to do what it takes to win (no, not take copious amounts of performance enhancing drugs!) - huge investments in terms of time and a willingness to constantly improve. He always swore he was going to get a Demon and he did. It was purely down to a passion for what he was doing and hard work (and not a small amount of talent). He produced stuff that he thought stood a chance and it got nowhere. All he did was put his head down and launched a concerted assault on what he wanted. It got him a gold without any whining about how unfair life is!

\"Hypothetically\" you should have pulled your model out of competition as soon as you realized the judges were not going to see anything your way. Why enter a competition you strongly suspect to be rigged? You couldn\'t win, and by staying to lose you just lent legitimacy to their monkey business.

After attending 13 years of Gamesdays and witnessing so many Golden Deamon\'s I have to say that quite often it\'s a crapshoot.
It\'s also pointless bitching about it as We can\'t do anything about it other than refuse to enter. And all that will do is prevent us attempting to achieve or ambitions.
Golden Deamon in the UK has been the subject of many allegations over the years ranging from blatant favouritism, through former studio painters being pre-selected, to people actually painting their entries in Warhammer World prior to Gamesday. Hey there are even allegations that Last Year someone\'s teenager Daughter was telling him what to select as a finalist. lol lol lol
Bottom line is Are you happy with what you Painted? If yes then that\'s all that really matters.

First off I check to see what miniature line / Army GW is pushing before GamesDay & whats being released in the months post GamesDay.
Also depending on the when your local Gamesday convention is held see the trends set by any previous GD.
Try to use your best judgement when your selecting an entry ( whats been seen, what minis are winning losing ect )
With any luck this may help you avoid the burned out mini syndrom.
If you wanna make the perfect entry find something Old, Obscure, Overlooked & PIMP IT OUT LIKE YOU LOVE IT.
That should impress the fans of that specific mini / Army / Sculptor OR make people rethink their dislike or lack of enthusiasm for the model.
That is the only way to go about it.
I prefer to pay Homage to the original sculpt & do as little conversion or modification as possible.
So far so good.
Hopefully I get something done for this years GD in L.A.

Thanks everyone for A: taking the time to read the world\'s longest post, and B: for giving some sound opinions.
Just to clear up a couple of recurring things:
1: \'Hypothetically\' the argument was not so much an argument, but lets say \'hypothetically\' the rules clearly stated you could enter Forgeworld models in the vehicle category, and on the day had been told it had to be entered in Open because it wasn\'t a GW miniature... Being realistic... Open is a hell of am jump and we all have to be realistic about what we can achieve. If you had hyporthetically got the rules there with you... wouldn\'t you show them to the judges and insist they re-consider following the rules they set out? it was (hypothetically) a well mannered, heated, discussion... there were no raised voices and no foul language.
2: No, I know there is no realistic recourse and I know the people on this forum can\'t do anything... and yes, voting with your feet is the option that has already sprung to mind... but has also been diregarded. I guess, as others have said... it\'s nice to just vent your spleen to others who may have had similar experiences, just to know you aren\'t alone.
3: \'hypothetically\' asking the judges why a decision was made to learn from it and improve is already something being done, though on the day (of our hyporthetical scenario) the language barrier may have been an issue.
I know people are forever whining about GD being rigged, unfair and generally down to luck and being a friend of the judges... and it makes me feel less singled out to hear that others have had even worse experiences... and I also (as stated) realise that I may well come across as a whining bad looser for even bringing it up... and accept that... but it was important for me to discuss it with other painters, who I respect and who have greater experience and knowledge than I do (that\'s you lot on here) in order to help me get to grips with it and move on... and you have helped.
I am gonna post some new mini\'s on here today... obviously the hypothetical entry in question won\'t be amoungst them, what with it being only hypothetical and all.
