White spray

Car spray paints are fine but Games Workshop\'s \"Skull White\" primer dries very quickly and it costs about the same.

What are you using it for? I assume you are looking for primer? Paint is not primer. Paint can be an undercoat (GW Skull White).

Rank & file, I use Krylon white primer, about 1/3 the cost of GW for twice as much.

Serious stuff = Tamaya primer.

Really? I thought that Games Workshop paints were more.

For primers, I can get Duplicolor Sandable Primer for $4.86 with tax locally. Works very well at least up to 65% humidity (highest that I\'ve tried).

Kyrlon runs about the same, but I don\'t like it as much. But, if you have a Michael\'s or Hobby Lobby nearby (at least in the States), you may be able to get cans of that paint (or primer) for about $3-4 with a 40% off coupon that they have with some frequency.

Yeah, GW stuff is generally overpriced and their paints and spraycans are no exception.

Automotive primer works for me and it\'s way cheaper than any of the hobby primers - often bigger can and still cheaper.

GW (Citadel) white spray primer in a can is overpriced, but if you\'re wondering about quality, it\'s good stuff and very consistent from can to can. Used it for about 3 years and never had issues with it.

Before I invested in an airbrush for priming, I begrudgingly paid the price for that stuff exclusively because I could trust the quality.

Testor\'s (makers of Dulcote) white primer is garbage though, don\'t go near that stuff.

i already have a can of gw primer but its awful, the spray looks all bumpy on the model. i have tried shaking it for longer and spraying at different differences and in burst etc.. but it still comes out bad

Last thing to try then is warming the can in hand-hot water and seeing how it sprays.

If that doesn\'t help then just put it aside for groundwork maybe.

totally agree there. have recently started using halford\'s spray primer and it\'s great! smoother than gw, harder wearing, bigger and cheaper. wins every time for me!

Sounds like you\'re putting too much primer on the mini. Really, you only need a light dusting. Also might want to make sure you\'re not priming too close to the model. Might wanna pull back a bit and see if that helps.

The GW stuff is expensive, but it\'s good primer.

Yes. I use the brush on primer from the Reaper Master Series Paint line. I thin the paint about 3:2 (primer to water).

Works well, but using the primer through the airbrush does require more cleaning than using regular paint. If you are priming one small figure, using an airbrush is not worth it, but the airbrush works well for doing many figures at once (especially if the humidity and/or temperature is not conducive to spray priming).

Yarr almost every major paint brand carries a line of primer that is compatible with their paints. I\'m preferential to Vallejo Model Color myself for shooting through my airbrush. Thinned with a tiny bit of flow aid and water to a sprayable consistency works fine.

I looked at Halfords primer and it\'s £5.79 compared to GW\'s at £6.50. How much are you paying for it? I\'d like to find some cheaper primer because I have a load of plastic minis to paint.

Sauce Devil, I use Hycote primer mostly - it\'s roughly equivalent to £4.70 where I get it (400ml can).

A couple of you have mentioned humidity...what ranges of humidity are acceptable for GW primer (both black and white)? I\'ve never heard of this.

Personally, I think people stress about humidity a little too much. I spent the winter on Kauai. It\'s the wettest of the Hawaiian islands and home to the wettest spot on the planet (Waialiali Crater). Humidity is high. \'Specially during the wet, winter months.

Anyway... I generally tried to prime when it wasn\'t actively raining, but I had no problems. All winter long. That\'s using a combo of GW White and Krylon White and Black.

Just my two cents on that...

Thanks Einion, I\'ll keep an eye open for a can of Hycote when I go shopping on the weekend.
