Ok stupid question here. Has he joined the British Army or the Navy? I thought that it was \"tradishion\" to join the Navy. Either way I would think that a couple of weeks in boot, with a dog face DI breathing down the back of his neck will get any ideas of superurity out of his mind, royal blood or not. I\'d think that if anything the whole experince would bring him down to the level of the \'common\' man, officer or not.
Now the question is if he joined the Army, what MOS is he getting into? Tanker, Infantry, SAS, Combat Engineer? What?
I read, though, I could be wrong, that he went to the army, in a squadron that was due to go to Iraq. But once again I could be wrong.

He\'s certainly in the Army....

God knows what mob however ???

Harry has just graduated from Sandhurst, the UK\'s premier officer training institute. It seems largely to cater for the relatives and offspring of foreign leaders however. I believe Idi Amin was a graduate as was King Hussain and the Sultan of Brunei.

The former defence secretary, Lord Carrington, said in 1973, \"Sandhurst produces one half of the future leaders of the Third World and the London School of Economics the other half, although I think the former does a better job.\"

As the UK is now a \'third world country in denial\' perhaps they should have sent the other brother, our future king (if the Monarchy survives that long) there:D:bouncy:

Don\'t believe I\'ve ever not agreed with you, less, finn.lollol

But seriously, if the monarchy is making money for the firm, then things must be working properly, no?

The Danish monarchy brings in tons and tons of kroner as a result of publicity and good will each year...or so the royalists say. So, strike my last comment about them being on the dole, and Long Live the Queen! Course, being an American , she can\'t make me a baron....

I believe they cost us more than they earn....if we sent them all off to the Falkland Islands and just opened all their palaces and castles to the paying public. Took all our art treasures back and exhibited them properly...we\'d make a lot more money. People don\'t pay to see them, no one hardly ever sees them, they just want to gawp at the paraphenalia...

I certainly wouldn\'t argue with that.

I\'d ideally like to get rid of them too, but unfortunately I think something is needed...;)

That\'s Funny. Seriously this cat is living in Atlanta(where I live) now. Thanks guys.

As for the monarchy: Its not my argument, and I don\'t know what they\'re up to now; but historically alot of former imperial subjects are in better shape than they would have been had the empire not existed. I wish I could be knighted though. That would be nifty.

I enjoy the cut and thrust of debate myself but feel that we ought to wait until we find something we actually disagree on before crossing swords

Steelcult: You are quite right of course, but this is supposed to be 2006....

True. Where\'s the second son of the Duke of Malborough when you need him?

How do you know that? Have you been to a parallel universe where the British empire never existed?

Both Iraq and Palestine are former British \"protectorates\". Look how well they turned out.

I\'m no ones subject!!

Reading this I started to think that Finn, DR and I might be triplets mysteriously separated at birth lol

The big difference between you yanks (and most of the rest of the world) and us britts is that you are (theoretically) on a par with your rulers - we are not. We are vassals, serfs - subjects - of the Queen!

And btw if she reads this thread half of us could end up in the Tower of London!

What accident of birth puts the Windsors - sorry - Saxe-Coburg-Gothas over the rest of us????

They are parasitic and contribute nothing but a source of gossip - which the politicians are adept at exploiting to mask their own inadequacies - check what else is happenning next time there\'s a royal wedding or baby.

They only pay their own way because of the civil list (my money!!) and because they are land rich - NOT because they do anything useful. I was so pleased to find out recently just how many ships HRH had launched and how many bridges she had opened during her reign - and doesnt she do it well! - Good job we have her and her \"firm\" on retainer isnt it?

Personally the Russians, the Chinese and the French have all found perfectly effective solutions to their \"Royal\" issues - its just a shame we lost faith in our first democracy and got the royals back in 1661.

As has been pointed out no one can tell what would have happened in the world if the Royals hadnt existed but empire (not just ours) has a lot to answer for and people are paying the price across the globe today - look at a map of Africa (for example) see where the borders are drawn with a ruler (as in wood or plastic not the other kind although thinking about it ...........) and thats probably where there is conflict as the people - divided or confined by those straight line legacies of empire try and sort themselves out!

Is it any wonder that i stopped collecting historical figures and moved on to fantasy:rolleyes:

As are the United States, Canada, and Austrailia - and they didnt do to bad, did they?

Palistine has been a mess since the Romans ruled there (wait, another Empire that has much to answer for) and as for Iraq, hmmmmm well, lets see, nope, not going to go there, this thread is political enough as it is.

lol silly misinformed person - I\'m guessing you\'re a little anti British :D

They were both ceded into British administration as mandates by the league of nations after WW1 as a peace initiative due to both countries being ottoman and allies to Germany. Both administrations ended in the 1940s... that\'s 60 years ago! I hardly think you can blame Britain for the troubles in either.

The USA and Australia sure are nice places, but the small populations that descend from the original native populations of those countries for the most part don\'t seem to be enjoying the benefits of that wealth.

I\'m not anti-British. I\'m a British citizen! I\'m just anti-royalist. :D Probably comes from having been raised with the scum in very expensive English boarding schools.

Sorry, Beelzebrush, my bad on the Palestine/Iraq thing. I\'m not trying to blame anyone for anything, I was just trying to make a point that it\'s impossible to know how things would have turned out if the British empire had never existed (although most probably the role would have been played by one of the other big European nations).

Erm, can I say I\'m quite anti-British when i consider what it means in the modern sense? The root of the word and the group of people it once represented in its original format is long dead. The only time I\'ve ever felt positivity towards the word \'British\' means in its modern context, is when I consider the sacrifice real, ordinary folk from these isles made during the world wars. Sometimes the Olympics gets me going as well, but in the main I see Britain as a group of peoples. These peoples are all very different and can in no way be represented by a Union flag that belongs to another age, an age of conquest, slavery, murder and exploitation. Devolve the UK to its main constituent parts and keep that very name - UK, United Kingdom.

And for God\'s sake, drop that disgusting dirge God Save the Queen! England can have Jerusalem or carry on with Land of Hope and Glory, anything but forcing the song of the monarchy on people who couldn\'t give a toss if they existed or not.

Every nation in the UK has qualities and foibles and probably moreso in England than the other countries due to its population. Let these differences be celebrated and give groups of people the chance to have meaningful input into matters that affect them everyday rather than having Westminster lump crap on them all the time. Yorkshire, Lancashire, The North West...celebrate how different we all are.

And get rid of the monarchy too.

I want to thump my tub!

You Philistine...

God Save the Queen is utter crap, but there is only one other alternative, that would we could all share...\'I Vow to Thee My Country\' ..Mentally insert country of choice..:D

Tub thumping...that used to be a euphemism....;)

For interest:

I vow to thee, my country—all earthly things above—
Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love;
The love that asks no question, the love that stands the test,
That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best;
The love that never falters, the love that pays the price,
The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice.

And there’s another country, I’ve heard of long ago—
Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know;
We may not count her armies, we may not see her King;
Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering;
And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase,
And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace.

Finn I can\'t believe that you, an avowed athiest, wrote that \"I vow to thee my country\", would be better than the miserable thing we have now. Have you listened to it lately?:D
EDIT: Obviously you have. It\'s such a pile of Victorian era dogma. Exactly demonstrating the mentality which drove hundreds of thousands of men to die on battle fields like the Somme, in support of their monarchy.

And aside from that how many people actually know the second verse to \"God save the queen\". (Bless Elton)

@Nomis: Thee, Me and Finn triplets, That\'s a Bl***y scary thought!

Hmmm..

Well, it\'s got a better tune...

:D

And there isn\'t much God in it is there..or does that come in at a later verse...?

I like it because it isn\'t called I vow to thee my Queen/King /God.

And, despite my feelings about supreme deities and monarchies..I do, truly, madly, deeply.... love my country:innocent:

I don\'t know about OZ but our indigenous peoples have built real jazzy casinos to make a profit from us. In all seriousness, I would say that there are few peoples in the Earth who can say they are still living on soil they originally occupied. Conquest is the rule of history. While that makes some squeamish it is a fact. I find it difficult to feel guilt for things I had no control over.
