Why Americans are Fat

Eric Schlosser\'s book \"Fast Food Nation\" is a facinating read, quality magazine level writing rather than hideous scientific gobledegook. Excellent insight into the commercial factors affecting the 1st world\'s diet & a valuable insight to lead away from assumptions like \"all fat people are stupid & lazy\". My favourite section is the 2 page list of chemicals that make up the \"Strawberry Flavour\" on a milkshake ingredient label! B.

SORRY ITS TRUE !

Having travelled the world and spent more time in the U.S (Closely followed by France) than any other country, I can assure you its NOT A STEREOTYPE !
I am aware its not P.C. buts its true,I have extremely good friends in many States of America and all those who have also travelled the world will also tell you its true.:(

The 3 biggest issues are simply this,( in my opinion )

1. American portions.
All the restaraunts I have eaten in dont understand the words \" just a small amount for me\". You cold easily feed 2-3 european folks on a portion for 1 in the U.S. :(. U.S. folks eat out a lot.

2. Dependance on the car.
Its very difficult to walk to the shops or any were of interest in the U.S.

3. The additives that goes into U.S. food.
A lot of it gets past regulatory bodies ( just ). But boy if people bothered to check some of this stuff out ,theyd never eat half the stuff they put in their mouths.

And as Brits lets not get smug , have a good look around next time you are in your high street , we are slowly getting like our american cousins !

One final point, also true of us well.
SATANS ONE EYED BEAST !:flame::mad::flame:
Karl Marx said. \" Religion is the opiate of the masses \".
Not any more Boys & Girls !
In the 21st century \" Television is the opiate of the masses \"( Adie Bay ).
Millions plonk themselves down in front of their T.V. screens for hours on end and just absorb it all. Saddest of all is we believe all the garbage we get fed as well, even many of our\"factual\" news programs are just half truths. Its another sad fact that we Brits got dragged into a war on the polititians & media backed premise that Iraq had big scarry weapons of mass destruction. Turned out to be a real WHOPPA that one didnt it !
Why is it that U.S. & U.K. offiials who were involved in Weapons inspections in Iraq for up to 10 years prior to this last war were never seen on telly. Those boys and gals would have told you its impossible for W.M.Ds to exist in a country that has NO INFRASTRUCTURE TO BUILD THEM !!!!!
We are all being fed not just\" bad food\"!
We are not children or babies, we need to use our brains & reasoning over many of the issues the media sells us.So much media is almost state owned.
From someone who has told the Queen 3 times that he would die for Her !

GOD bless .....................V

P.S. long time since I have posted anything controversial

It\'s funny how views can be very different amongst neighbour countries. In France, it\'s the privately owned media that are looked at with caution : how much credit can be given to a media who\'s head company is implicated in the scandal that\'s being covered :p?

I\'ll also give it to you that we don\'t trust a lot the state owned media ... yes we love complaining :p.

They also don\'t mention the \"items\" we sell to those we then condem as well as the pork barrel deals that put money into pockets instead of equipment to those who need it, when they need it.

Ever wondered why certain public sector wages within councils always rises way faster than inflation, it\'s because some parties demand that a percentage of it goes towards party funds (your voting for who gets to screw you)

read the bill of rights 1689 and mangacarta, you will see how much goverment breaks the constitution (yes we have one) and operates soft slavery (i shit you not!)

Indeed I do; deep-fried goodness! I have to admit, fond as the memory is I wouldn\'t have been too pleased to get that much just before a steak I was hoping to enjoy

The reason people are getting fat (at least in the US), is that fat foods are cheaper, faster and easier to get/eat than healthy, balanced food.

I don´t have online statistics to back it up, but I remember reading that by far the most people who are getting fat and obese are the \"bottom\" of the social barrel. These people either don´t have the money or the time to eat nutritional (ofcourse a lot of people are also just plain stupid - like the kebab woman somebody mentioned earlier in the thread).

Also a fun fact: Studies show that diet products actually are more fattening than non-diet products because the artificial sweeteners trigger a part of the brain that makes you go hungry and crave more fatty foods.

it\'s also convenience food being used as a main diet by many (bread has fat added to make it last longer, ever wondered why home baked tastes better but goes stale quicker!)

Eating cheap food in american is easy. Anyone that has been to the grocery store can see that all of the fruits and vegetables are very low in price per pound. Th problem is that americans do not like the taste of healthy food nor do they even know how to eat healthy. They would rather pay $1 for a large bag of chips than $1 for a pound of bananas.

There is a restaurant here called Souplantation. It is an all you can eat salad bar that also serves various soup dishes, pasta, and small sliver of pizza. I go to this restaurant all the time and when I go I get strickly vegetables with a small amount of dressing, that I never end up using, in a small side cup. The fat people that come here smother their food in dressing. At least three heaping spoons full. It is nasty but is testament to the fact that they cannot tolerate just the plain taste of fruits and vegetables. They need something extra fattening to taste better.

Another problem over here is that food portions at restaurants are way too big. And food that is low in size can be increased, like super sizing!

The biggest problem is that none of these people understand that most of the food they eat are comprised of simple sugars. White bread, cake, and other foods with very low nutritional value but are high in simple sugars are easy for your body to digest because they are already processed and broken down to a simple form that your body can use right away making you hungry faster. Americans need to start eating more complex carbohydrates so that their bodies spend more time breaking to food down causing the foods to rest in the body for longer making the individual less hungry.

Although I checked with all my work colleagues, and none of them ever heard of the sorry experiment, I did a quick Google search, and you seem to be right ... this is a sad day for french cuisine :p.

I originally posted this in 2005 (Have I really been around that long?)

Here\'s how I lost 95 pounds before I met my wife in person...
I knew her from the internet first... but that\'s another tale...

Scott\'s Get Off Your Fat Ass Diet Plan.

Step 1: Determine that you really want to lose the weight.

Step 2: Eat whatever the heck you want, but in moderation. Binging is bad.

Step 3: Get regular exercise.

I don\'t bother with any of those diets.

Fact: In the 70\'s, people believed that a balanced diet from the \'four food groups\' was good enough. They didn\'t worry about \'trans fats\' \'polynumeric fats\' \'polyunsaturated fats\' \'saturated fats\', and pasta was considered \'the enemy\' to people wanting to lose weight.
But, the gross national average weight was 30 pounds lighter than it is, now.

What happened? We started listening to dieticians and scientists instead of using good old common sense.

We also invented horrible things called \'Game consoles\' and \'computers\' that provide entertainment without exercise. No need to go play baseball or frisbee to have fun. They\'ve got like 12,000 baseball games for game systems or computers.

As a kid back in the dark ages we used to get out and ride our bikes, play ball, hike, walk to the store, play tag, hide and seek and other such arcane things. Now it\'s video games and just plane old cra.....whoops, TV. Why when I was a lad we had only 13 channels in black and white and actually had to get up to change the channel!! A mighty steep climb it was to and from the TV.

:p

Actually, this just proves another reason Americans are fat...\"percieved food value\"...the \"Liter-O-Cola\" pictured above cost a whopping 99 cents, and you fix it yourself, meaning you could skip the ice entirely and walk out with a half gallon of soda for a buck. We see something like that and assume that because we get so much food/drink for so little, we MUST buy it. (In my case, I bought it because I was drywalling my new house which is dusty, thirsty work. excuses, excuses, right?)

That\'s how super-sizing got a foot-hold...when people see how much extra food they get for small change, they percieve greater value...therefore they must buy...and once you\'ve paid for the food, it would be letting it go to waste not to eat it all...

It\'s all good for me baby! I get three meals for cheap. CONTROL is where the battle of the bulge is won on lost.

nah thet best way to do that is with a brie or camembert and put it in the oven in the thin wooden box it comes in. then make some wedges (not out of a packet) or get a baguette and dip it in! you can add push garlic through the rind too before if you want

Actually, you don\'t listen to \"dietitian and scientist\" either; you (or rather them) listen to media people who use scientifically looking words ;)
