Why do my minis get so low points?

I have posted my minis here in the past, and today when i finnished my 10th scout i took new pics of them all.

You can see them all here:
http://www.coolminiornot.com/artist/Quidis

I gave them all a 5 vote, since that is what i think they are, table top quallity.

But now a couple of hours later all but one have a lower score, some as low as 3.2 :(

Why is this? Are they really that bad?
Gimme tips and ideas on how to improve my tabletop paintjobs.

Honestly, no they\'re not that bad. I\'d give \'em a five. They\'re not super elaborate or anything, but they\'reneat and tidy and you\'ve done a little shading, highlighting and basing. I bet they look good on the table when you\'re playing.

One thing I suggest that might help the scores for this group is posting them all together (as in, take a single picture of them all), and maybe just have close-ups of one or two of your favourites. People often seem to vote better if unit minis are presented in their unit. Another thing to help future paintjobs is thinner paint. The paint on these ones looks a little thick (I sympathise, I struggle with it myself!). Water the paint down more- you\'ll need maybe two or three coats to cover that area, but that\'ll mean that less detail is obscured and the paint should look smoother.

Edit: Don\'t panic too much about scores after only a few votes, either. It\'s only when a mini hits 50 votes that it\'s used to determine your CMON ranking, and then it only chooses the top five minis in your gallery. There\'s supposed to be software that removes outlying votes, too.

I agree, they fit the criteria for a reasonable tabletop quality. Maybe the lower scores are due, perhaps, that people are getting one scout after another and they\'re getting a bit \"scout weary\". As AW said, a group shot and a a few well chosen closeups may have been better.

GreenOne

I paint my thumb.
The \'scout weariness\' thing is a good lead, The pictures are also very close (Nicely done picture tough), tough it can be good for a top-class mini it can hurt the ratings on a tabletop one cauze it shows the flaws.
Presented otherwise, it could be a solid 5.

With all the top painters here, it can be a really hard crowd too, I get crappy scores too so I sympathize.

5\'s from me. I really don\'t know why people would rate them lower, save for the \"Fatigue\" factor.

So long as you\'re happy, I wouldn\'t put too much stock into the score.

I\'d give a solid 5. Maybe even a six. They are really not that bad, your painting is clean and neat. Some areas you can see the paint is a bit thick, on the weapons you can really tell. I\'d work on layering a bit more, and blending smoother transitions. As always, and you will hear this from everyone, keep your paints thin, a few light coats is always better than one thick one.

There is nothing wrong with these mini\'s, they are good army standard painting and as such will balance around the tabletop average.
For comparison I did a gallery search on Scouts, Space Marine Scouts and Space Marine Scout and the highest scoring ones I found were in the 8\'s and those were by some high class painters.

As has been said your paints do show as a little thick in some places, most noticably the chest eagles. Thinning them and working the depth of colours for shading will help. However Scouts in themselves aren\'t really the most inspiring mini\'s, characters, heros and specialists attract more attention (and more shots on a battlefield).

I checked out your gallery and they look just about right for the tabletop. \" Scout fatigue\" could be a problem. The other thing to consider is that you shouldn\'t really take note of the average until you get to around 50 votes. This is because it only takes one ar*ehole to go through the system clicking on 1 for everything to squew the rating. Especially if you only have a few votes, yours are around 18 at the time of writing. If you wait until they have around 50 votes each they should have evened out and I think you\'ll find that the scores end up a lot closer to 5, or maybe a bit higher.

I agree wholeheartedly with the comments above - definitely a solid 5 from me. Nice and neat (especially like the skin colours!), and certainly a good basis from which to improve.

One day I\'ll get around to finishing my ones - one finished, the rest in various states of misadventure.

have to say i agree with every 1 else in this post, first time poster but having looked at some of the other pictures of models on the site i would say that more than 1 photo of the models would help really. a good all round view

and like every1 else said a good shot of them all together, they are definatly not sub tabletop standard by any means so dont take it to heart :D

im yet to post any photos of my models yet or even complete an army so your way ahead of me already :)

Okay, here\'s my honest opinion: They\'re a bit loud. Get the gallery up on the screen and step back a few steps. The colors? Red, Blue, and Yellow. I think the color scheme is what is killing you. Probably, if the guns had be painted black or the chest plate red, you\'d be scoring a full point higher.

But, screw the rating! If you like that color scheme and this is a playing army (as opposed to a display one) then have fun with them. You\'re not going to get to second base the first time you step up to bat. I keep getting tagged out rounding second! lol

there not a bad tabletop standard, but your paints do need thinning, and(i\'m not sure whether this counts for tabletop) you need to work on your blending, because the paint looks a little streeky. i think you should spend some real time on some single minis and then post them here, but also your photos arn\'t all that good.

p.s. i\'m not sure whether this has been said already cos i\'m lazy and can\'t be bothered to read, i\'m also in the middle of a school leson so also don\'t have the time!

I just voted a 6 on each one.

These are very solid minis, and with a few more techniques could easily be 7\'s and above.

Screw the actual vote. Maybe its a good watermark, but nothing more. Better folks than all of us have tried to figure it out to no avail.

Keep it up!

I agree with everything thats been said here, their definitively of tabletop quality and deserve at least a 5, Im not sure why people vote stuff so low, maybe to make their stuff look better or something. I think one thing thats bringing down the score is just the fact that their scouts. its not exactly the coolest model in the world. If these would have been terminators painted to the same standard they would be 5.5 or above, dont sweat it. Just use it as motivation.

as it\'s been said before. They look like a good table top standard. Much more work than I see most who still play 40K. But you must remember, the rating isn\'t everything, just kick back and have fun with your hobby!

Fact of life: a great majority of the people who vote regularly does so only to snipe other people\'s minis. This often creates odd results, as I have seen miniatures painted quite nicely rated much lower than others which have only been dipped.
At the end of the day your rating does not mean that much: if you want a higher one pool together a lots of friends and ask them to vote repeatedly for you (there is people on other forums who have this perfected as an art).

Thanks for the support everyone.

I will take a group show later this week and see if the score improves :)

Everything has been said before... clear 5 from me... Keep on happy painting and don\'t depend this on a rating... really...

To Dragonsreach thinner colour theme - maybe you somehow got the opportunity to translate the following tutorials to english... i didn\'thad the time at the moment, but this should help a lot:

Thin Colours by Georc:

I\'ve tried to do a tutorial about the basic techniques - pictures should tell a lot here, i guess:

Maybe this is intresting too - fixing minis while painting for the better grip and feeling:
