Wicksy's WIP project thread

Having made myself paint a 1500pt Blood Angel army for a weekend of Planet Strike with some mates, i swore to myself that i'd try and paint something nice to a display standard to make up for my rushed, tabletop quality marines. I already had the perfect project i'd started some time back not long after watching Jeremie Bonamont's instructional DVD about 9 months ago. It was a Aurlok Nation battle toad by Alkemy as featured in the DVD. Its been sealed in a jar for about 8 months so was in perfect condition to paint. Tonight i got him out and carried on painting with paint thats sat on my wet pallette for about 3 months now (and still good to paint with). Here's a few WIP pics as the skin is coming to the end of painting. I just have the face to go and want to incorparate some greys into the chin and jowls to break up the greens. I also want try some NMM which i've also been working on with mixed success.

Can i ask for some critique? I've been working on blending and layering and i think i'm getting the hang of it slowly but i'd appreciate some feed back so far.

Also, here's a picture of my paint "doodle pad" where i've tried to hone some NMM freehand. I had the idea to do an NMM chevron for a banner so tried some SENMM and std NMM at the bottom of the picture. It just doesnt look right though...... can anyone give me some pointers please?

From what I can figure myself, your "SENMM" is actually closer to NMM. I'm still trying to figure it out myself, i'm currently on my 2nd ever go and it's getting there very...very...slowly. Light behaves very strangely on highly reflective surfaces, it all depends on the shape of the surface. I've found as a general rule observing shiny things (mnnh pretty shineys) that there's a thin line of light but it appears to start at dark at the top for the most part, yet not on some other things...
Best advice I can give you is to observe shiny things and draw your own conclusions tbh. I'm still doing it subconsciously and taking mental notes. The translation even with the knowledge is very difficult though =/

I've watched several videos, and looked at numerous articles and step-by-steps.
Seeing, however, is quite different from doing.

I agree with TBS (ew, scary) you have to observe and work it out yourself.

A small update. I've been lazy and played too much on the PC instead of painting at my desk. However i've worked on his head and the base i intend to mount him on. The face i feel needs more layers of white and the head isnt exactly well photgraphed but it needs more highlights and a little more shade. I also need to do hair and his jewelry, which i intend to do NMM gold. I really need to finish this guy but new years celebrations beckon me away from the painting rig (again).

Cheers! Worked on the NMM gold tonight but i'm not happy with it yet so more fiddling to do. Also am working on the loin cloth.

Looking at the recenmt work compared to my older work i seem to have got worse at painting! My blends on the head dont look as good as those on the body. Perhaps its the tighter space to work on or my own brush control? Still, its getting there slowly.

Yeah, the skin (especially the belly and legs) looks great. From the pic, it's hard to comment on the head. Overall, looking really good, plus it's a great mini!

A new prject!

Thanks for all the kind words and advice in here and the submission thread. I'll get to him for some more work at another time when i feel inspired to work on him. However now i have another inspiration to work on. As a keen Blood Angels player (Warhammer 40K), i have been building an army to play fully painted on a painted board with painted scenary - a dream my friends and i have shared for over 15 years when we first got into the hobby. Now i have said painted army it needs work to make it more killy and this obviously means new models. This is one such piece - a terminator chaplain. I have been generally unimpressed with most of the chaplain models GW have produced with the exception of the new Lemartes, the old school guy in the 2nd ed death company box and the terminator armoured chaplain. This is the guy i need to round off my squad of death. Spent a good few hours cleaning, filing, scraping and sanding the model to get a smooth finish. This is the first time i've spent so long prepping the model for a paint job. First picture wont exactly show much....he's just undercoated black with a white dusting to better see detail. I was originally going to work with true mettalics but having reread matt benz's NMM article and constantly eyeing up Darren Latham's NMM article in White Dwarf i'm taking the plunge to try and work on the technique some more. I have just started some NMM on the model laying down some shade on the halo:

The greens are beautifully done! I love the smooth shading. I also love the model. Frogs and toads are just awesome! :)

Thanks Kathie! Check out the Kraken Editions website. He's an Aurlok thundertoad warrior. There's shed loads of excellent models on that site to really inspire you to sit down with the brush and paints :)

Well, if i can pull off the NMM gold on the crozius and the wings above the head it should look ok. NMM is bloody time consuming though! Took me 4 hours to do the halo and base coat the croziues and winged detail. Once i have a bit more to show for my time i'll stick some update pictures on.

An update. I finished the halo and painted the crozius over the course of the week. It was a challenge....i'm no Darren Latham but if you squint hard enough i think it almost looks like metal :) I've also started to base coat some parts for working on.

Armour with be black. I also fancy trying to do NMM red on the gun casing (cheers Mattserbenz for the recipe!). I need to have a think about how to do decent looking scrolls. I've not managed it yet. For my basic troops its usually base of bleached bone, sepia wash then more bone and white highlight. I might have to have a fiddle on another model to get it right. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Whoah......this is an old thread.....epic threadomancy alert i'm afraid but i'm resurrecting this in order to continue my painting escapades. The chaplain hasnt been finished after all this time......he's a bit further ahead than he was but not finished. Alas i discovered MMO's and my painting went pear shaped :p Got as far as this though with this guy:

Need to finish the armour, some NMM elements, gems and the gun. I'm a better painter than i was when i started this project though. I got out of playing Rift and headed straight into painting 3000pts of Skaven for Warhammer Fantasy where i shook off the rust. With the skaven coming to an end, i promised myself a display project; a nurgle chaos lord. Here's a WIP of him.

I like the armour so far. Its not quite done yet. Picture show some highlighting that needs finishing plus i want to glaze the armour a little more and add some purple into the shaded areas for interest. Real metallics this time though they're gonna be rank and rusty ;)

I could do with some advice about the skin......while the armour pops for me, the skin still feels a little meh and washed out. Any ideas what it needs? This is the first mini with significant areas of skin to paint and i'm not sure how to proceed.
