I\'m sorry, no, it wouldn\'t. From my experience you need to be perfect painting and have something of a wow factor to catch the eye, be it in the base or paint job.

the red and blue arent shaded well enough, and simply needs more contrast to make the piece jump out.

But then again - enter and prove us wrong!

Sorry Mathew, but like most have said, although it\'s a pretty good paint job, the mini is quite \"out of the box\" and the paint job doesn\'t have much eye candy.

If you want to have a chance to get in first cut, then you have to come up with an idea that has never been done before, rethink and refine it several times, and then maybe you\'ll have a chance. Most people also spend a few hundred hours on the paint job to work in texture and lighting effects.

But like Rob said, enter it. What ever the result, at the end go see a judge and ask them if they can explain to you what was lacking. They don\'t always have the time to answer, but it could be worth the try ;).

I have to join the choir, I\'m afraid! The biggest problem is that the blendings are too rough and that the OSL doesn\'t work. The torch doesn\'t seem to illuminate anything, just colour it red. The light reflections must be lighter than the surrounding areas, not just another colour. I\'ve seen examples of better quality that haven\'t made first cut, so I wouldn\'t get my hopes up. But, do enter it! Experience is always a good thing! :)

I too will have to say no.

Now this has nothing to do with the painting, but more th epolitics of the company. I have this on very good authority, from someone who was involved with the judging.
They pick the minis on a few things.

1 what is the newest army(wont always win overall, but will definatley place)

2 how well will it photograph

3 Know artists, they tend to do a little better, unless they have seriously cheesed off the company.

Sorry to have to say the above things but they are fact, although their will be people that disagree, but fact is fact.

as I said in another thread; Golden Demon = seriously flawed.
It\'s pretty silly that we put so much status in a competition that awards the 3 miniatures in a category that ultimately suit the judges marketing strategy and appears to favour recognised artists (and I seen some hissy-fitting as well), and not the fundamentally best miniatures entered. But it\'s all we\'ve got.

edit; whoops.......someone will be drinking soon

I do not have a vast experience on GD\'s but i would unfortunatly have to say no. Just because of the small details...

This isn\'t true to all the GDs. It mostly depends if the judges are artists/slayer winners or not. If they\'re artist/slayer winners they won\'t follow, in general, your 3 rules.

do I assume that\'s the French Golden Demon Cedric? Do they decide on the the first cut as well? Certainly I\'ve never seen an established Artist judging in the UK - correct me if I\'m wrong anyone!

And once again it illustrates that GDs well be judged on differing things in different countries.

Yes. For instance, this year\'s FR GD judges will be David De Abreu (main judge, he does all the major dioramas for GW (remember the Chaos drop-ship and the Lustria city-temple, those were his works; he also has an awesome Slaanesh WH40K army)), Gil Charpenet (director of the french WD) and Jérémie Bonamant-Teboul (well ... you all know who he is, if not, look at \"bragon\"\'s gallery ;)). Since 3 to 4 years, Slayer Sword winners have been judging the french GDs.

Concerning the first cut, it\'s a bit different in France; they take a maximum of 10 minis. The assistants do the main picking, but since there are less entries in France than in the UK, the judges take the time to look over most of the entries and make sure nothing has been left out. Last year when I was at the UK GD, there was some talk about the assistants choosing the first cut. Call me chauvinist, but I think the french are on the right path. I mean, in the end, each category will only have 3 winners. You don\'t need to take the 10-15% best (considering most categories usually have well over 200 entries (don\'t \"individual\" categories in UK often have thousands of entries?)) and most people know when a mini has that extra \"oomph\" to deserve a demon. Some will say putting more people in the first cut can encourage the new painters, which is true, but then the gap is too big between the winners and those who are in first cut IMHO.

So very true ;).

Nope, but don\'t let it stop you entering, it\'s all good experience.

Don\'t see what the problem is with having a batch of \'Highly Commended\' minis in each category. It\'s a good way of rewarding what will inevitably be outstanding minis.

Strange...this was the first time I looked at this poll, but it wouldn\'t let me vote...just let me view the results!

Good luck Matthew!

I have to agree with the majority im afraid and say no. I have only entered 2 golden demons but the quality of the figures that make the cut would usually be of a much higher quality than your piece. But the photo is poor so it may be much better than it seems.

Still enter the competition, its a fantastic way to understand the type and quality of work you need to produce to win, originality, painting skill and \"wow\" factor as someone else mentioned are vital for success.

Good Luck :)
