Unfortunately no, I don\'t think so. Have you been to a GD and seen the judging yet? The process is painful to watch if you have an entry in the contest The competition is fierce, and (most of the time) only the really amazing stuff gets past 1st round. Sometimes it\'s only a very small handful of entries out of a couple hundred.

They pick the minis on a few things.

1 what is the newest army(wont always win overall, but will definatley place)

2 how well will it photograph

3 Know artists, they tend to do a little better, unless they have seriously cheesed off the company.

Sorry to have to say the above things but they are fact, although their will be people that disagree, but fact is fact.

Don\'t know that I agree with this, nor do I think they are fact. I\'ve been to three so far, and all of the judging made sense to me based on quality of conversions and paintjobs. I didn\'t detect favoritism based on artist or on \"new releases\".

Well, it won\'t place for sure, but enter GD, it\'s a really good experience!
Look at the minis, take some photographs if you can, discuss with judges...

And these silly rules i read in this post it all B****** you know
Not only in French GD like green stuff said, but all over the world
Sure if you got TWO minis with the same standard (sculpture/conversion + paintjob+taste etc.) the most recent mini in GW range will certainly place, but it really depends on the judges...

With all the GD stuff i saw i never see something \"logic\" in judging.
Judges are human beings, and humanity is not perfect or equal, so are their judgments

I totally agree. It really gives you a sense of what you are up against in a GD contest. It\'s also hella-cool to see the entries up close and in-person!

Just bring your thick skin with you. Sometimes the judges will look at your entry for all of 2 seconds and put it in the \"not advancing\" section. It can be disheartening.

One of my favorite models I\'ve done was a Vampire Count conversion of Archaon - and it didn\'t even make first cut

Course Jarrett has one of the all time great GD horror stories(blu-tac, anyone?), so....

Believe it! On your first trip to a GD come expecting that you will get beat down like a dog. Believe me, my first time was very painful. Not so much because I didn\'t make the cut, but seeing the mini you worked so hard on next to something that is several levels above you can really bring you back to reality.

If you are like me, you prefer to see it this way because it shows you just how much farther you have to go. As you continue to compete, and really work at the techniques you want to learn, you will see that gap close.

Personal Recommendation

If you really want to get better, don\'t let yourself get sucked into the idea of competing in an \"easier\" category. Always have something in at least one of the single figure groups. These are by far the best way to judge your progress.

The inspiration you can get from it is awesome. Last year in Atlanta, I made first cut and was probably one or two models away from the placement. It drove me so much that I went and immediately started working on changing some of the techniques I use that night.

Three months later, after gawking at other people\'s stuff for 5 Gamesdays, I got my first trophy and I am hooked even more.

Go for it and don\'t stop! You will be amazed at the support you get from people who are competing right alongside you.

Yeah, just start attending the GDs... Show up and play in the tourney, enter a couple figures into the competition so that you can see your work next to others. You\'ll have a lot of time to look at the GD entries and see first hand what it takes to win. My first GD was Chicago 2004. I entered into one category... Didn\'t even make first cut.... But f*** if I didn\'t have a good time looking at all the entries and praying for my piece. I\'d say that a good way to judge whether or not you have a chance of winning is by the ratings here on CMoN. The piece that I entered into the GD only was getting a 7.5 here on CMoN. After looking through the GD winners here on CMoN I\'ve gotten a pretty good idea as to what it is going to take to win. After all this research I have started putting together pieces that I feel have a good chance this year.... Or so I would like to think.

MathewBaich What a thick skin you have already developed you will be fine learning from all of us after this post I would think....and you should if you have the time. there are so many here willing to help and so deserving to teach.

Just my opinion...
I am not worried about my place I worry if my family gets there safe and returns in one piece.
As an Irish driving on St Patties Day(shudder) gives me the shivers. Can not tell you how many years in a bar with my parents but, any one for a game of pool???
I think that worry puts my perspective in focus. Wish I could fly but I can not afford it.
I am trying for good entries but it is not the reason I am going to Atlanta.
First is that Becca talked me into it, she could charm birds from trees.
Second, I have a chance to meet many of the people here, have a schooldog from out of state coming to paint and play a day here in FL, then drive up with our motley crew,
What a thrill i get to see Grumb and Dawn,Justin, Terry, Jeff, Rodnik, and so many more ...my humble opinion is
that is more what the gaming is about.
If I get a goodies in the boot for my efforts its all pudding I say and should be thought as such. So much to learn and so little brain, I need that to be my perspective.
I am not expecting anything thus will not be let down for such a expense and vacation I want memories more than statues.
