WIP Autharch, magnetized!

Hey everybody, just posting pics of my magnetized Autharch. Probably gonna eBay the sucker in a few days, need some spending money for my trip this New Years

He\'s magnetized for playability, and partially for ease of painting The magnets were kind of a pain in the ass, but they\'re strong enough anyway. You can pick him up by the wings and not have it fall apart, which is handy. The magnets are also set up in such a way that they won\'t rotate on the back, they snap into alignment automatically. Handy!

I\'m thinking of doing him up in Ulthwe colors, black and bone primarily. I want to try and replicate Razza\'s style on this guy, minus the incredible fine detail work. I can\'t even come close to his freehand

If you think he should be done in other colors, let me know in the poll please!

Thanks, finally some feedback You\'ll be happy to know I got impatient and started painting him Ulthwe... some out of the ordinary color choices so far but I think the use of more gold and bone will bring him back to the ordinary when it\'s all said and done.

And hey, an Autarch should stand out a bit anyway, shouldn\'t he?

I think doing some gems red and some of them in that blue-green would be sweet too. The back banners might be done in the blue-green too, not sure. Probably a patterned mix of accent colors for the wings

This is looking great. The inside of the cloak is excellent, I love the colours you are using.

I recommend it, I don\'t know who did this guy but it just screams classic Jes Goodwin Eldar.

Lookiing good, and agreed, he should stand out from the rest of the crowd. Cloak rocks so far, inside and out, keep the greater part of this guy undestated so that the helmet and cape continue to shine.
Where did you get your magnets? And do you have any tips on fitting them? Do you just drill and glue or what? I\'m guessing you\'\'d use an epoxy glue to put them in plane right?

I haven\'t had any problems with superglue in the past... but accelerator helps a lot. Fit the thing just right, then hit the accelerator and hold it still for a while just to be sure before moving it apart again. That way the glue hardens it in the perfect shape, in case it\'s not drilled 100% perfectly.

The magnets are from K&J Magnetics, they\'re in the US and have a ton of goodies on their website. I got them ages ago.

looking good need to get the book myself so I can figure out a good weapon /wargear combo.
I like the idea with the magnets though allows a change...
Just got both Autraarchs and I like them a lot.
This should look good in your usual clean style.

I don\'t have the book myself, so I figured it would be a good idea to figure something out for customization. They have so many bloody options, it\'s a shame to limit the guy to one setup. This way collectors and gamers will both (hopefully) have a good reason to think about maybe picking this guy up when he\'s done

@ Hubba bubba - if you\'re thinking of using magnets, bear in mind they are TINY - and a right pain to glue...

The main problem I had was aligning the poles one each piece - If you try and simply drill and glue, sometimes the magnet would rotate while you were trying to attach it, and the poles would end up being the same and therefore repelling each other - meaning you had to dig the wrongly attached magnet, gouging the area around it.

Marking them is also difficult due to their size.

But they ARE Hella-strong magnets. I got mine from Ebay - I can give you the link if you want.

I found the easiest way to mark them is with a Sharpie, just make a black dot on one side of them all... doesn\'t matter if it\'s N or S because they\'re all the same when they\'re in a big column.

So glue one side in place, wait for it to cure all the way... then drill out the other side and dry fit it to make sure. When it\'s all lined up, take it all apart again, snap on the magnet, put some glue on the end of the magnet, and attach the other piece!

You have to wait to make sure it\'s dry before you try to pull it apart though, the strength of the magnet can break fresh superglue bonds easily.

This also works best if you have a loose fit on the drilled out hole... a tight one and you won\'t be able to pull it apart after dry fitting Because of this, the technique works best for flat magnets, not the long skinny ones.

Anyway I did most of the gold and the bone on the helmet... not a ton of progress but hey I had 3 finals this week

Except for the blue/green stuff I think it\'s looking really similar to Razza\'s (Darren Latham) stuff, which was really the plan. I really think the two of us co-evolved some very similar styles, but I still have some urge deep down inside me to bust out the funky bright colors once in a while.

The Farseer I do might use some of the techniques from Brokenblade\'s red and white Farseer. That thing is simply amazing, and uses dead simple hilighting and shading techniques. Take a base color, shade with black, hilight with white! It\'s so simple...

Another update! Sorry it took so long... took a few weeks off of the project while I was in Hawaii and getting back into University mode.

Painting contest is Saturday and I think he\'ll be done on time. I\'m not looking forward to painting the back banners though... freehand is the bane of my existence

I\'m just glad I found a color for the sword. I was going nuts trying to think of something that would work, then I just decided to use another teal method for all the sword and gems instead of repeating colors already in the scheme.

It\'s different... but not too different Let me know what you think!
