WIP Eldars

after getting my hand dirty with Necron, and growing tired of the black and gray painting, i decided to switch army, and go with the new Eldars. I like their flashy color, their history, and their new mini (especially the harlequin)

So i got myself
1 Old Battleforce (practice and all)
1 New Battleforce
1 Karandras The Shadow Hunter
and my wife got me :
1 Eldar Seer Council (5 miniatures)
1 Eldar Dire Avengers (10 models)

I\'m still far from done buying, but for now, it will do. On my \"to buy\" list, there\'s still : Eldar Rangers (5 figures), Eldar Wraithlord (1 model), Eldar War Walker Squadron (3 models), and Eldar Swooping Hawks (6 Figures). Basically, each of the units i like the most from Eldar. Probably some harlequin too eventually, but for now, that\'s the list...

They are aimed to be painted mostly for fun, no show, just a good looking army that i could play, if i ever feel like understanding all the rules and codex.

After much deliberation, i decided to go with a red/white look. Most of the red is painted with Scab Red, and highlight will be painted with Red Gore, but i will most likely only highlight the backpack.

The white is just that, Skull White, and will most likely not see much highlight or shading for now. I may add some Ice Blue as highlight but for now, its solid color. (white was hard enough to get, i\'m kind of scared to screw it while trying to do some blue inking on it)

The biggest gem and the eyes will be painted Enchanted Blue while the smaller gem will be painted Goblin Green.

So here\'s the idea :

And here\'s the first test :

The head just got started, and the white still has some work to be done. I Primered them white, then painted the red, but didnt know it would be so hard to cover up with the white, so i wasnt too careful. Lesson learned.

here\'s my first gem... i think it ended quite nicely, using GW technique.... blue, bottom lighter blue, and a white dot at the top

that mini took me about 6 hours so far (still have to do the arms and weapon)... considering i have like 30 of them, i\'m scared.... but i love what i did with it, and am actually very proud of the result, even if its far from perfect..

Now a Quiz... what color should i paint the weapon? i was thinking bleached bone maybe, but not 100% sure.

some advices... keep the white paint off the red areas. and teh gems would be better if you had a darker base colour and a brighter final high light.. that makes more contrast and the result better. and another question... weren\'t the gems suposed to be green? or did you change your mind? I would sugest that the cloth could be bleached bone instead of red. but maby you already thought about that??
I hope that helps :)
keep up the good work, looking forward to see some progress with this one :)
the weapon could be shadow grey. that is a good colour taken from saim-hann army ;)

Yeah, i learned it the hard way... it was actually primered white, but when i did the base coat, i wasnt carefull enough, and painted a bit on the white... which was a bitch to removed afterward... the white is really hard to cover any color

you think? I looked at the GW gem, and though that the black in the gem was too dark, and was giving an odd look to the gem. And i tried to find real life gem to compare, but couldnt find any pictures that shows what it should look like IRL (i searched opal, since its the only gem i know that has some dark color)

and another question... weren\'t the gems suposed to be green? or did you change your mind?
Problem is, i dont have much paint yet (basic kit from GW, + 5-6 bottle i buy as i need them). So when i though about making a green gem, i realized i hadn\'t enough color to make a big one. so i stick to small green one, using yellow as the light color (i think it look good).

Yeah, i\'m gonna paint it bleached bone, but i dont have the color with me yet, so its gonna wait until later this week (i hate to go to the store for just 1 color, and my wife want fabius bile for her b-day, so i need mucho money :p)

But i was wondering, is the line around his lower body supposed to be a girdle? couldnt figure that one out.

also, am i supposed to ink bleached bones on the cloth? or just paint it straight bleached bone?

here\'s a few more pictures... basically, i finished the gem that were unpainted, and that\'s about it... But that\'s when i realized i had the config with pretty much the most gem to paint (except the thing on the backpack, where one have like 19 of them on it (i\'m gonna skip that one i think).

The pictures are a bit dark and yellow, that\'s mainly because i have a crappy light to work with, and if i used any other kind of light, it was just worst. Its still good enough to see my green gem, and the overall look... And that\'s when i realize that pictures really bring out the mistake you make on a mini... when i have it in my hand, i cant see all the mistake (well, i can see some, but not as bad as i can on these pictures...). Enough rambling, here they are :

I\'m aiming for a high 6 on CMoN... beside highlighting, should i do something else? i know that some of my lines are rough, but they\'re very hard to work with (my paint mostly dry by the time my brush is at the right spot to correct)

My advice to you - don\'t aim for a CMoN score, i used to do it and it really gets you down when you don\'t achieve it. Just paint and let your scores rise as you improve.
This im sorry to say won\'t get a high 6. With a bit of blending on the whites and ome highlights on the reds i would give it a 5.

i know i wont get it, but still aiming for it :p

i know there\'s some work that can still be done to the white, and particulary on the border of each color to give it a shaper look, and that will probably be my next task (beside painting the weapon in whatever color i managed to find looking good)

the guardian with the most gems i painted on it has aprox 67 gems painted on it lol the average is about 50 or so

Heres my 2 cents worth. Wash the whole mini in flesh wash (yes even the white bit) Rehi light the white and red if needed. The gems would really look better painted black and doing at least 4 layers up to white.

I like the scheme you have picked. Very simple but effective. Good luck doing a whole army of them.

what would a flesh wash do to the color? i\'m not sure i understand the use to do that

As for the gem, i wont go darker... if anything i\'d go lighter (at the bottom), but black gem dont look really good imho

Its the black contrasting with the brightness of the colour and the white reflective spot on the black of the gem which gives the gem the illusion.

for highlighting... alot very thin layers... almost invisible. when you make a few layers you will see a smooth surface. the red... slow highlighting... and don\'t highlight with white mixed with red... use orange mixed with red...
hope those tips will help :D

i actually started highlighting last night... basically just did the six pack and some odd bits with blood red. I thinned my paint, and used a 10/0 brush to do the lines... not sure if that\'s how we\'re supposed to do it (printed a how-to awhile ago, but never bothered reading it).

I think it looks ok, but frankly, it looks like my red isnt really solid enough to be able to get some good highlight...
