@scottradom
THANKS, wors of encouragement are always good.. soo close tooo done...
The face. hmm well of course, as i had posted in the blending for noobs thread
linky here the key was watered down paints. it took many layers of shadow and many layers of highlights and a lot of midtone repairs in between. I paint much slower than i feel is necessary so it would prolly take me longer than most. All in all I\'d say for the face 3 hours or so, I dont remember exactly. However, I am thinking of keeping a small journal for each figure that I do, which records the colors, techniques and times I use for each mini I paint along with a small but high quality picture of that figure, I think it would be a fantastic reference for myself. Years from now, after i have taken a few months off (as i do from time to time) I can look back and see what went well and what didint. plus the nostalgia alone would be great.
@Hestan101
how did you do the marbling?
I am pretty happy with the way it turned out since I kept it rather subdued. The trick there, was:
1. start from a base coat of chaos black, with a SMALL hint of dark angels green.
2.before the marble effect begins. SUBTLEY highlight upwards starting with 1/2 dark angels green and 1/2 Chaos black.
3.then full dark angels green,
4.then 1/2 DA green and half goblin green,
5.then very little goblin green.
to do this use the side of the brush in sweeping motions from the middle, toward the top of the staff and the bottom of the staff. highlight only a strip from the top to the bottom of the staff. this strip gets thinner with each brighter highlight. Also, make the highlights more intense at the top and bottom (this will mainly be cheived by the direction of your brush. I let the paint dry between each stroke of the brush to see how intense the layer turned out then add another and another till I am satisfied or have made a mistake lol. but remember subtlety is the key here, dont go overboard on the highlights.
Now for the marble.
1.start with your dark angels green, and create a subtle vein patern oriented but not totally confined to the section of the staff that is highlighted, if you go too far out you can correct it with an upcomming step. Take a look online at how marble veins (granite veins) look and try to emulate that. remember to be basic, too much clutter will obscure the effect. you can be pretty vague and soft with your lines here as the next color will be a bit more refined.
2.Next, use the goblin green to add more distinction and definition to the DA green vains you created. Do follow/ fill in the DA green marble veins completely, just in enough to pick out the shape of the veins.
3.Finally, take some bleach bone (a cream white with a yellowish/greenish hue) and apply very fine lines in the middle of the veins. Dont use a brush too small or you wont be able to hold enough paint; it will dry in the middle of your stroke. I used a windsor and newton series 7 miniature 1 for this.
3.once you are happy with the result, re affirm the shadows that you may have gone into using the DA Green/ black mix. be subtle (i know ill stop subtle stuff now lol)
4.once done there, I used a few washes of diluted citadel dark green ink over the whole thing. This was done firstly, to make sure the bleach bone was not dominated the greens. Second, one of the qualities of inks that I dont like i actually used to my advantage here. The inks dry with a certain shine to them but not as much as say a gloss finish would. who knows, a gloss finish might even look pretty cool!
5. afterwords I went over some of the bleached bone again to make sure that I had adequate veins.
anyway, thats how I did it. I\'ll keep getting better at it as I try the style again and improve on the techniques i used. I wonder if anyone has done a write-up/article on marble effects for minis? if its something that people want and they think mine is OK maybe it would be fun to do one.

Again, thanks all for the input! really helps.
Cheers:beer:
