Oh dear, someone doesn\'t take criticism very well.
You bad bad man Orb.
Obviously this is painted to perfection and your opinions are unwanted and in poor taste.
shame on you.

Sorry Alex if I scared you off!

as I said, just trying to find out more.

I hope that you are honest and open enough to answer what I asked, regarding both the painting aspect of my first question and also what I did that was in such poor taste.

here\'s hoping

Alex, it\'s marvelous!!!!!!

Orb,
I’m not scared off easily. These forums are to be used to teach and elevate not to say negative things and bring people down. My purpose is not only to teach but to motivate. Let me get this clear, I don’t mind criticism as long as it has substance. I have been around for over 30 years. My way of painting is just another way. It works for me. Anyone who is interested in learning a how-to from me just needs to ask. I post my works-in-progress because many enjoy them, they enjoy seeing the process and have some very legitimate questions.

Your statements, “But then again, when I think about it, Conan himself on this piece must be about 1 ft in height if this is 1/7 scale, and as such it seems to be very unfinished to my eyes. The sort of thing that looks great from a few feet away, but kind of disappoints when you pay it more attention” are in fact disappointing. First of all, when I post, I indicate whether the piece is finished or work in progress. This piece is a WIP. I don’t think I have to constantly point this out. Secondly, for you to indicate that this looks “great from a few feet away, but kind of disappoints when you pay it more attention” is in fact insulting. You are implying that my work because it’s in a larger scale can’t stand up to close scrutiny! Thirdly, your comment that it would be “nice to see more Alex and less of an almost total reproduction of the original painting, is implying that I have no creativity. The fact that I can copy any painting speaks for itself, but in addition anytime I paint a piece my creativity comes into play.

Regardless if the piece is a commission one or for myself, I put my heart and soul into it…that is why my figures resonate with life!

Thanks for the compliment.

A friend in the arts,

Alex, it is his opinion and knowing Orb, it wasn\'t meant to insult, just to inform that that was how he felt about your work.

Honestly you come across as a pompous arse. I don\'t think I will waste my time seeking \"inspiration\" in these threads.

lol lol lol lol

Honestly I agree with Rob, at that scale I believe alot more could be done with detail and colour nuances.

The shinyness of the piece is quite distracting aswell though. (is this due to oils? I know sometimes they can take up to a year to completely flatten out)

And if you can please take more shots from different views. Would be interesting to see it from a more 3D perspective.

Orb is just stating his opinion, it happens to differ from yours. This happens from time to time. He\'s also more than capable of defending himself, so perhaps I shouldn\'t get involved, but I\'ve got to say that your responses to his comments haven\'t really done you any favours in my eyes.

Why? Well I expressed pretty much the same thing a while back about your work and you didn\'t go off on one, so what\'s the difference here?

As for him \'implying you have no creativity\' - no, he\'s saying that you are replicating another artist\'s work in what you do (which is true) and that Orb would be interested in seeing something that isn\'t done in this way. You are reading the implication into it. Perhaps you are a little insecure about this aspect of your work even after you have been in the hobby 30 years (which I feel is of vital importance and I\'m very glad you keep reminding us of this fact!).

I want to give you the benefit of the doubt and believe that you are here for noble reasons as you claim, hell, just to be here to show folks your work, it doesn\'t have to be noble!

But the tone of some of your posts is definately throwing you into the pompous category for me too I\'m afraid to say and throwing off any inspiration factor you may be trying to send out.

lol You really know how to make friends Alex lol and you do come across as thinking your the best thing since sliced bread. When I looked in your gallery on your web site, to be honest I was not overly impressed. May I suggest you go have a look at the competition in the Gallery on here, and most are less than an inch high not a foot. Having said that, and it needed to be said :D

I think Conan looks great so far, but agree their are some very pertinant points raised on this thread, which could do with answering.
I like how you have done the skin colouring, but again if you look at the first photo of the face, the shading goes way to far up from the beard line, and the eyes are kind of disapointing, being the gateway to his soul :]

Hope you can drop this ego shite, and start talking to us as equals, as indeed youhave much to inspire us with.

Here\'s hoping :D

His right eye (our left) looks wonky compared to his left. Maybe it is the picture?

Still, I agree with Starks. The girl is far too bright compared to Conan and throws the lighting idea right out of the window. It just doesn\'t look right.

But yes, this is a WIP. I\'ll be interested to see how it progresses.

erm... has his website gone down?

Also, sometimes 2d doesnt always translate into 3d so well - i think it loses a lot from not having a background and not being \'in situ\'...

Hi Alex

Finished the piece yet? :D

Yes, you want to teach, but do you think you have anything you can learn?

My comments didn\'t have substance? To me they did, I thought long and hard about it and you dismissed them out of hand.

Congratulations on having been around for 30 years . Myself, it\'s 29 years.

\"Almost done…I just have to go over some tone work on the base, the back of the base and finally pastel it.\"
\"First of all, when I post, I indicate whether the piece is finished or work in progress. This piece is a WIP\"
your first statement implies it\'s near completion and the work required is on the base. My comments were regarding Conan.

\"You are implying that my work because it’s in a larger scale can’t stand up to close scrutiny!\"
no, i am saying it\'s hard to give close scrutiny of a large scale piece when it has been reduced in size in a photo.

\"your comment that it would be “nice to see more Alex and less of an almost total reproduction of the original painting, is implying that I have no creativity\".
NO!!! It\'s meant as I wrote it! It wasn\'t meant to imply that. I\'ll say it again; I\'d like to see more of Alex in the piece. Simple. I even qualified that statement by saying I understood it was a commision.

\"that is why my figures resonate with life\"
Well, you are entiltled to your opinion

I also notice you\'ve gone quiet again.

People in this thread have asked legitimate questions as I re-read it. If you\'re here to teach then maybe you could do them the courtesy of answering them. Including myself.

Here\'s hoping to see the finished piece. Where I may re-evaluate my opinions on seeing it.

Enjoy

Orb

its ashame that someone with talent like yours does not seem to be open to criticism. or in your own way i feel as if you have received little criticism over the years and may not be used to it. i would reccomend you take advice from others, even those who are not technically there as well as you are, because it is from everyone that we learn. i learn new things from my students everyday and if you tend to become upset over very simple comments made by others then i would suggest either toughening up or not responding to said comments. i hope that you become a valuable member of this site but please if you feel someone is poking fun of you take it up with them privately or send an email to a moderator. it will make you look much better in the end and hopefully the whole pompous persona people are mentioning will be a thing of the past.

cheers

Hi Everyone,

It’s basically finished but I like to go over and tweak it a bet more before I ship.

I like to thank everyone for sticking around with me on this WIP.

Lots of pretty nuances in there.. personally I don\'t really like how you\'ve painted Conan\'s skintones but the girl on the base is lovely.

Do you plan on posting it up to the gallery?

And I think some people had questions for you prior to your most recent posting, and for their time and effort they deserve an answer.

i donno i still find her as the focus, very distracting as well...the rear view conan is the focus, so its confusing, especially because the two views look like two seperate figures

but the front view he has the same tones as the basework so she stands out a lot more

i donno the quality is not the issue its great, but the consistency and focus is an issue in my opinion

See.. the colours are right. And the face on Conan looks fantastic in both versions. However the lighting techniques demonstrated in Frazetta\'s haven\'t been replicated with this 3D version, instead it is quite a bit darker. This could improve the figure quite a bit..
