WIP: Preyas (Bakugan)

Wanted to put up a fun little WIP for a rework of something I picked up cheap. Ever seen something after starting this hobby and thought, \"I could do better\"?

My son has really gotten into Bakugan (a Pokemon send up, with little balls that pop open and \"battle\" with cards and such). Well, if anybody else has a child with this affliction, you probably know the little toy balls that one could buy have been THE thing to have this year and are sold out.

But! Sitting next to those forlorn, empty hooks are lots and lots of \"collectible figurines\". They all look \"Pro Painted\", but hey, they\'re $2.99 each. So, I picked up this little guy: Preyas (link to image). Placed next to a Space Marine, he\'s just a tad taller in real height. If he were standing up, he\'d be probably 1.5x-2x as tall as a SM. So, would be a right nasty monster to encounter.

The following is the base reference photos (I\'m going to mostly keep the color scheme, although probably going to move colors around a bit), a primed picture, and after two coats of the \"Vivid Violet\" base color over a foundation base of Astronomican Grey.

Future plans are to give a bit more base color to coat (I was painting in a half dark room with the kids, so between the bad lighting and having to close and open their paints, I missed a lot), then use some Tentacle Pink to highlight up. I\'ll move over to a dark blue (probably some Breonne Navy) for the head, with that highlighted with Enchanted Blue and the same color doing the body spots. I\'m not going to match where the cartoon puts them. I\'m going to go for a bit more of a \"realistic creature\" type scheme, picking out the details and armor-ish bits in blue.

The base is the really hard part. I don\'t play, so I don\'t really care what it looks like. So, suggestions on what to do with that would be welcome. I\'m thinking I may just repaint it black and call it done. It\'ll probably get handed to the kids, so it won\'t be a display piece. Unless I really like the job I did. In which case, I\'ll have to run to Target and get another one. :D

Okay, too long winded. Here\'s pictures:

Had to search for what the dragonoid thingy was. I guess I lucked out as my son wasn\'t that picky. He\'s got something that pops open and he\'s happy with that. So, one set of the three little ones before Thanksgiving and two more sets that I managed to order online prior to the first.

We\'d been searching the stores for them, and of course bare hooks. But, we stopped for a rest stop at Wal-Mart on the way to Grandma\'s house and figured we\'d check. Sure enough, they had two left... and two other boys grabbed them off the shelf as we were walking down it. Devastation ensued. On a hunch, went to Grandma\'s after we arrived, figuring they\'d try to restock before the Turkey Day madness and lucked out.

I\'ve never actually watched, so I\'m considering myself lucky. Probably would be easy enough to whip up some mock cards. Scan \'em in and shrink \'em. Maybe put Masquerade\'s glasses in GS with a crack in them. And a can of hairspray! Sheesh! Just did a YouTube search.

Okay, got some paint slapped on yesterday, literally. I think the first set of highlights were good, but then the second set looks bad. Probably should have stopped at the first. Opinions?

Wow. Three months with no painting. But, got in the mood (and chore less) this last weekend. Really didn\'t like the highlights I\'d done before, so stripped it completely and repainted it. Probably should have stopped at one set of highlights again, but oh well. Click on the image to go to a bigger size.

Then I managed to get some of the blue highlighted, so I\'m pretty happy with the way the head is turning out.

I really need to practice more on doing highlights. What I did on the purple looks a bit bad. Very rough around the edges (yeah, yeah, Cardinal Mini Sin #2: Thin your paint). I did a lot better on the head, but that may just be because of the darker colors.

Anyway, still working on it, and will be doing the eyes and teeth next. The eyes won\'t offer much, but I\'m going to try to do the teeth as a bit green stained. That should prove to be some fun and practice.

Well, finished this up last night and got pictures of it today. Nothing really of note. Gave it a blue wash, did the eyes and mouth, then worked up the base. Tried to give it a bit of an OSL on the base, but I\'m not too happy with that part. Probably needed several more layers and to fade out more. But, I\'ve been bugged every day for the last two weeks on when he can have \"his\" Bakugan back so I\'m calling it good.
