There then, I thought there was time for a real update in between reality rants. :D Here we have one of the glowy tubes, ready for insertion:

There\'s two diodes in there, one of which needs to get a bit closer to the reflectors, it isn\'t very visible as you can (not) see...

reality rants aside that looks smart, as smart as big smart thing with a degree in smartness from oxford lol is it intended for the barrel\'s or as part of your internal reactor setup, get it in there so we can see it in situe:D i\'ve no doubt hestens right its just for the coolness factor

And now I am having second thoughts... that was one of the \"reactor tubes\", after that I made a test to see how I could make the barrel in a good way and stumbled upon this:

Looking awesome if I can get that glow for the entire barrel, something else that struck me was how beautiful the even glow the tube managed to get from that single diode was. Should I continue with that curl-ish design in the pic above or get the more even glow in the reactor that a lit tube creates?

Wow! Both look cool!
Why not go wild and use both? The first one with the \'inner thing\' going on could look perhaps better for use with the reactor as it\'s more a \'warp core\' feel.
You could use the second one on the gun itself actually. Imagine those coils glowing with real light instead of painted effects. You could even have it charge up gradually.
Hmmm perhaps if you airbrush the coils very, very lightly (barely misting) with a metallic paint it\'ll retain the transparency and it could have a nice shine when not lit. Whaddayathink?

that looks really good, it looks as though you did you try as i suggested and placed a wash inside the pipe it looks bright in the dim lighting, i would say that the glow will still look pretty effective even in daylight, bang up job:)

That combination is actually what I had in mind. But I did not think of the misting. That would solve one of the greatest fears I had about the gun actually, the oh-so-apparent plastic effect everything glowy gets when not painted. If it becomes less transparent when not lit that will effectively hide the fact that it isn\'t \"standard\" and I will still maintain a good level of illusion of it being original parts. Sadly I am one of those that does not have the privilege to own an airbrush and none of the caps I have for my spray cans are good enough to create a fine enough mist for that purpose, could it perhaps be done with washing it with metallic colors? Painting techniques are not my strong side of the hobby sadly.

And no, I have not done any kind of washing whatsoever in any of those pics, that is 100% natural blue electrical light shining through different kinds of plastic. (yeah, 100% natural. lol)

Hmmm misting should work with a spraycan with metallic paint but it\'ll be tricky. Best to experiment on a piece of that transparent wire. Be sure to have a great distance and not to overdo it at once. best to work incremental with very, very thin sprays to see how much you can build up the effect before you lose transparency. I wouldn\'t do it with washes. i think it\'s work best if the metallic layer is applied only to the \'outside\' of the coil, to ensure luminescence within the construction. i feel that if you would do it with washes it would penetrate to deep or just all around the coiled wire and produce a messed up effect.
Some experimentation is in order me thinks.

this is my experience too, and the reason for my low post-count, only posting if i have a good reason.
most often, i take the deliberate roll of naysayer, even if i like pretty much everything on a subject, just looking for something to criticize.

Which brings me to my next point: painting this monster
before installing those \"iluminated\" elements, did you remember that you still need to paint the entire thing?
maybe you allready figured this, but it might be an idea to make the illuminated elements removable, or wait with installing them till you painted the rest...

Yes, that has struck my mind. I hope I have made sufficient precautions to prevent unnecessary difficulties. Electric connections will be made with magnets when crossing parts that will be removable and the model will suffer quite the extensive masking of sensitive parts when the time finally comes to paint.
Here we have the tank fully disassembled at it\'s current state of assembly. lol

never would have thought of that.... magnets....

i\'ll have to remember that one for my IG army, i\'m planning on giving every tank turret a laser in the guns, and red lighting on the inside. using magnets would let me switch turrets (and russ patterns) as needed....

by the way, you just solder the wires onto the opposite poles of two magnets and run the electrical curcuit through to the next magnet through touch.... am i right?

I am actually taking it another step, just use one magnet on your tanks, place the magnet in your hull and have a piece of steel in the turrets, that way you save pricey magnets and you don\'t have to worry about accidentally flipping a magnet the wrong way. Just solder one connection onto a piece of metal and the other onto the magnet. As long as the two meet there shouldn\'t be any problems at all with the current. There are possibilities of fluctuations when having two magnets close that are carrying different currents but when speaking about so low a voltage as in a small pointer laser that isn\'t even on the imaginable scale. :D

And as always, be very, very careful that the plus and minus parts never ever touch... But you already knew that, That\'s just one of those things you can never stress enough when making a delicate circuit.

Also don\'t forget that you\'ll nee two sets of magnets, otherwise you\'ll have no current whatsoever.

another answer to one of my dillema\'s, having a lighted, turning turret....
just use two magnets, one magnet in the centre, connected to a piece of metal, one magnet slightly off center, connected to a metal ring....
so simple when you think about it...

why not insulate any exposed wires, with green stuff for example?
