Ah, the Thunderhawk... another thing on my 'Must-buy-at-some-point-in-my-life list'

I want one too. But I will need to win the lottery or make a killing at a Casino to appease the wife, before I can justify spending $625.00 USD on one.

Okay, after a slight delay (work) I'm now ready to do some posting up of pics and whatnot.

So first up,as Meph predicted the first pic of a Stormbird is that pencil drawn pic of Ultramarines from the original Space Marine (Epic) rulebook.

Not too sure how big it'll turn out but if needs be I'll put up a bigger size later.

Next up we have what I deem to be a Stormbird from a super old Citadel catalogue.

Interesting isn't it?

Now last of all we an actual Stormbird that some dude in the UK (a GW store employee no less) kinda scratch-built.Here is the link to the guys blog,it has a full run through of what he used and how he went about it.Interesting point for the curious,I've searched on Ebay for the GI Joe toy that he used, they go from anywhere between US$80 and US$300.

The link-http://www.tanksandtrolls.co.uk/40k Stormbird Troop Transport.htm

Does anyone feel a little envious of this guy,you should check some of his Titans and Grey Knight stuff while you're there.

When I get to the Stormbird (after building 3 Thunderhawks and a Fellblade for my Dark Angels) I'm going to combine all 3 images into something a little more coherent with the description given in the Heresy novels.Ultimately though I feel it will look more or less like the one that the guy made,my only real criticism of it being the giant turbines, why you ask?
Even though they look damn cool, what purpose do they serve on a space faring vehicle? If it was a strictly planet bound vehicle I could understand it,maybe I'm overthinking it,let me know your thoughts.

Heres one more pic to give you an actual sense of scale, its huge!

One last thing,to find the Stormbird in the first place was a case of searching 'Stormbird' through Google Images. Its amazing how much cool stuff you'll find by doing it.

Hope I've stirred up a few fires, cant wait to move so I can get started on it.

Cheers dude,I figured someone would recognise it,still new to the blog scene and its amazing seeing what people have come up with.
Its strange that there aren't more Stormbirds out there after seeing it though. I'm hoping GW will put out some official canon pics on a Heresy novel cover or the like someday soon, would be nice for us mega-fluff fan boys.

Nice!
I will certainly be building a Thunderhawk in the future!

I've been watching the progress of the Stormraven and I have to say the attention that you're putting in is insane, this is what the hobby is all about for me.
edit - bloody awesome thread so far

Thank you guys!
I'm glad you like it because I really enjoy doing this... it's good for relieving from a week of work.

Well...
I thought that the Thunderhawks were big about 45cm's long...
but the Stormbird is huge.

Hope I've stirred up a few fires...

You did... you sure did!
There are so many awesome vehicles it's hard to decide what will I do next.
But first I need to finish this one.

cant wait to move so I can get started on it.
I am looking forward to see your stuff!

True,my problem is I start one thing, get halfway through it and end up with a bunch more ideas that just can't seem to wait,so lets just say I've got a table full of things that I'm trying to get done. One interesting thing I read in an Imperial Armour (can't remember which one) book is that there was supposedly a mid-size tank (inbetween a Predator and a Land Raider) once upon a time for the Space Marines, but the fluff states that it's pretty much signing your own death warrant to even speak of it in the Mechanicum. So I've been wracking my brain at night instead of trying to get to sleep thinking of what it would look like (but still haven't come up with anything). If anyone has any thoughts on it let me know, keen to hear what people think.

I am looking forward to see your stuff!
Thank you, looking forward to actually being able to devote an entire room to a studio and have a real work area to get me focused again. Now if only the camera I ordered 6 weeks ago would show up so I can at least take some teaser shots of my Dark Angels for you guys.

And if anyone can tell me how to 'quote' someone that would be awesome, cheers.

Just below the posts you have a button called "Reply with quote". To the right under each post there should be one :)

And just to the right of reply with quote, you can hit the "+ button (the + will change to a little check mark) on multiple responses. Then when you hit the reply with quote, it will insert multiple quotes, like above.

Also watch the little "commands" when you're replying. This message did the same thing yours did earlier. It looks like you almost had it but deleted part of the tag during your editing process. The tags are between brackets and have to surround your quote (or any other PHP tag). It's a bit like html - there needs to be a beginning and end. The entire thing should look something like this:

PHP:
text being quoted
Gakh! You're scratchbuilding hurricane bolters? Wow dude, arr ee ess pee ee cee tee!
Ah, Stormbird... I'd definitely lose everythign except that cockpit when redesigning them. Looks block and clumsy. The way they're being (albeit vaguely) described in the Horus Heresy book, it should have at least some large forwards swept wings for that mean raptor look. And it should be a good deal larger than a Thunderhawk, or at least more voluminous. They should be able to carry a full company of Marines.

And that Space Marine MBT, that's on my long-term 'to-do' list as well. Somehow I envision it like in the design style of the Land Raider, a lot lower, maybe a little bit less wide, and with a decent sized large tank turret on top, something like a Merkava or a S-Korean K2.

And it is.
In the link posted by Oktane you can see it next to a Thunderhawk and it's quite big!

(I don't understand why but the link isn't working... but if you copy/paste it works!)
He even upgraded the ship...

The original Stormbird was supposed to deploy 100 marines. I upped the anit a little and added the ability to transport two rhino sized support vehicles.

I am!
And when I was doing it I was thinking:
Why didn't I bought this pieces??? WHYYYYYYYY???
17 individual pieces for each gun.

I just had an awesome 'light-bulb' moment regarding the Stormbird,I'm gonna get a butt-load of Lego and make a mock-up of one so I can get rough dimensions and take some photos and whatnot to get some feedback.

And after looking at some stuff,in particular Romulan Warbirds (not much of a Trekker unless its got Shatner in it,I'm a Star Wars guy) the wing design looks how I pictured it from the Heresy novels, the only other things I remember being the large transport capacity (100 Marines? yes a whole company can fit in one plus a few light vehicles) and the lack of blockiness,as I remember it's described as having an elegant and aerodynamic shape unlike the blockiness and mass-produced quality of the Thunderhawks, which were built quickly and without finesse to bolster the Legions in the later stages of the Great Crusade as the Stormbirds were lost in battle etc... I think it was actually in Prospero Burns where it was said that the Stormbird was actually a design from one of the Warlords from before the time of Unity,it actually goes on to give a pretty good description from what I can remember. Will have a quick look through it later and see what I come up with.

Sagh,17 pieces each dude, that is crazy, looking forward to seeing how you did them, they look better than bought ones from what I can see.

And yeah,told you I was a fanboy.

The Thunderhawk in the picture is not the "official" one from Forge World. However, it is safe to say that given the size of the Stormbird compared to the minis, it is probably larger than the FW one.

The thing coming out the back of the Stormbird in the 'action' shot is actually a Rhino fitted with retro rockets or something like it,I think he got the idea from a particular piece of art of a Custodes Rhino from Visions of Heresy.

Here's a closer look from Tanks & Trolls:

Here's one with some Thunderhawks.

Correct me if I'm wrong but they look like the original limited (every one was numbered individually if I remember correctly) edition all metal GW Thunderhawk they made in the '90's,these things are super rare these days,I saw one on Ebay a few months back and had to tell myself no,the price wasn't a concern (AU$800 and FW one is AU$718) but the shipping would've screwed me royally, over $500 via courier. That and the thing weighs like 6kg's and is an absolute bitch to get to stay together. And it was missing a couple pieces.Gotta keep telling myself I really didn't want it.

I didn't know they had made them in metal. I thought everything FW did was resin. Neat, except the price...

It was made at a time before Forge World existed,it was churned out by Citadel and I think was the catalyst that made GW realise they needed someone to manufacture larger kits.

Still telling myself I didn't want it though...

We have a local with one of the original metal T-Hawks. It's about 50%-60% the size of the newer FW resin ones. We have one of those around here too. I should see about getting the two together for a scale pic someday. They do weigh a ton too as one would expect.

Hell yeah,if you get the chance please do so,I've never seen a metal Thunderhawk personally (or a resin one) but I'd like to see the size difference, never thought it'd be half the size of the FW one, good to know now I didn't buy it.I really didn't want it.
