Just wondering am I a tight arse or am I just stupid.
I have a credit card that is empty and will remain that way except for absolute emergencies. Got it when my son was born 21 months ago now and it is there solely for anything emergency to do with the little un...
Anyways just been having an argument with our lass.
She came back moaning about wanting to go buy a top she wants. She gets paid saturday so can afford it then but she is adamant she is gonna buy it today on Credit card. She wants it because she has seen it before couldn\'t afford it but it now has 10% off. Her credit card charges 16.5% a.p.r so if my maths is right it is now costing her more than the original rrp.???? She is determined I\'m wrong so I will probably lose this one.

Oh well Rant over back to the brushes.

is our lass our daughter, wife, sister, niece?

It makes a difference.

Now, you could be right or you could be wrong.
The percentage is charged (usually - I assume it works the same in the UK and the USA) on the amount you do not pay at the end of the month.
If you pay the full bill, you pay no interest.
In effect you get a nearly 30 day interest free loan.

So, if you can be sure and never charge more than you could pay in cash, then you are better off using the credit.
Of course if the credit is truly for an emergency and you\'ve used it when you didn\'t have the cash you won\'t have cash or credit in the event of an emergency.

Credit is tricky and should be taught in school.

:( We\'re only allowed to choose ONE? :D

Is the aforementioned lass the wife or daughter? If either one, you\'ve probably already lost the discussion by having it. ;)

Using credit cards is not intrinsically evil nor is it a sure cause of debt. In fact, you almost NEED to use them in todays world to establish yourself some credit. Unless you can pay for a home or car in straight up cash, you\'ll need credit, and to pay the LOWEST possible interest, you\'ll need GOOD credit.

Use them wisely, pay them off as quickly as you can, and don\'t buy outside your means. Simple.

Also..what vincegamer says should be true. That 16.5 percent APR is an annual percentage, the monthly one will be cheaper. But I\'d say use it to get the sale, and then pay it off before the 30 day grace period most cards offer.

The problem lies in that he has the credit card for a specific purpose: Emergencies.

It might seem OK to buy a top now, and then what the heck since you bought a top, how about this, then this, so on and so on.

If you cave in on this it will become a regular thing.

It\'s better to have a plan and stick to it.

demonherald have you learned nothing of marriage? remember shake your head up and down and say yes dear. things will go much easier. oh and be careful because eventually the conversation will get onto miniatures and how they are a silly \"little\" hobby. when that happens run away screaming and pray.... also remember most importantly...... this is the i want it now logic that we also get when we see a mini that we know we will never paint but it sits there taunting us anyway. *grumbles* *looks to the left at the stupid little ice witch from crocodile games sitting on desk* i\'ll paint you yet!! :D

Credit cards are evil.

But even evil serves it\'s purpose every now and then. Buying a shirt isn\'t one of them. And really, what\'s 10%? $4? Is the sale really that big?

Stick to yer guns, man.

You wann live with my Mrs.

If I happen to get a bit of money spare (very rarely happens), she like where did you get all that money........let\'s buy something for the house.

She\'s a lawyer so always got money spare, she goes out, spends £150 on shoes where\'s them once decides they\'re not as comfy as she first thought and then never wears them again. She spent £350 on a bag!?!?!!? A BAG I tell ya.

Women are Crazy, Cheeky, and down right rude.

P.S. If she sees this I\'ll deny everything, and tell her you lot wrote this.

I take offense to that! :flame:

I spent more than I thought I should have recently at a sale... but it was at FozzBozz\'s closing sale and I got all minis and paints! So there!
:p

Laura\'s the star in our relationship when it comes to money, so i have a completely different opinion about women over spending and being silly with money.

Duende, my mother-in-law uses that same reasoning. She loves to hit sales. She always says \"But I saved so much money!\" hehe

That logic works if you were intending to buy said item(s) in the first place, and they happened to be on sale. But if you weren\'t intending to buy them, then you didn\'t save anything. You still lost money lol

Although, I\'m the impulsive shopper in our marriage. My wife will budget for something. And when I want something, it\'s torture to have to wait :)

Oh I agree Dave...lots of people show no discipline when it comes to these things, and it makes much more sense to have a plan.

But yeah, I see your point, it could very well be a slippery slope once you start using one.

As to using an emergency CC for a mere top..... I agree with Evil Dave. The baby comes first.
