women make me not buy miniatures

when you have children you have to give up minis for a reaaally long time it SUCKS.

with a kid in pipeline, my great masterplan says otherwise :D lol. im never going to surrender my pain(t)station!

...hmm i really do hope there will be some time leftover for painting...

Bah, you can always find time somewhere, just a couple days ago I assembled a mini, greenstuff and all with my sleeping 2-week old son on my lap. Just have to make sure no superglue or greenstuff comes into contact with the infant! My 2-year old likes to play with my less-breakable warhammer figs, I've got some old 5th edition plastic dwarfs (all one piece and fairly solid). I give her a couple of them and she plays with them while I paint. Also nap time = painting time (when I'm done all the things my wife needs me to do!)

Its a bit different with a new relationship when you want to spend every spare moment with your special someone, but I'm sure you probably can find an hour or two a week or at least a month in which to paint, you just have to want to make the time. The really time-critical competitions and challenges might have to be put aside for the time being but it doesn't mean you can't have a few long-term projects on the go.

One thing I found about the relationship vs. mini painting thing:

At first you spend a large portion of your free time with the other person. You date, you spend less time on ALL of your activities aside from work, and you're happy.

Then you move in together. You start needing an hour or two staying the hell away from each other. This is when she reads/draws, and you paint your minis.

It advances through the years. (sans children)

My parents really only spend meal times together (and presumably times at night that I do NOT care to contemplate). When my dad isn't at work he's tinkering in the garage. My mother is thrilled because it affords her the oppurtunity to do the stuff that she wants to do. Happily married for 32 years because they largely leave each other the hell alone.

So your saying that kids are like cats when it comes to minis? The two should never be mixed? unless you like your minis covered in fur and drool, scattered under the most if not all the furniture in the house and missing one or two important pieces. "Is it just hided someplace or is this going to be a costly visit to the Doctor?"

yep! I even suspect a commies' conspiracy: children are conditionned into convincing their parents that they deseperately need a public health care program

Kids are like cats in that they herd and obey instructions in much the same way.

Kids are also a lot like ferrets. More like ferrets than anything, I think, because they like to find your stuff and steal it. And then probably chew on it and maybe swallow it. I've lost so many bottles of superglue this way.

Kidding, kidding!

Well, as for me, I am a musician, was very involved in a band and now very involved in recording my own stuff, and am also very involved in my mini painting hobby and i am definitely a grown-up geek...

BUT I am also married and a step dad of triplets teenage girls and am working a full time job....so you'd think that between my job, my family and my artistic hobbies, I am living a life of conflictual relationship, but not at all!

When I met my wife, and started to get serious with her, I've been honest right away, and told her how much my hobbies were important for me...a few years later, I am living with her and her kids, moved from the other side of the planet to be with them, and they completely respect my artistic occupations...

so yes, I spend a lost of time recording or painting, but i also teach guitar and painting to my kids and my wife LOVES my minis and my music, and respects the time I need for that just as much as I respect the time she needs for her own past time, which don't keep us apart at all, and leave me some time to spend with the kids too...it's just a matter of reorganizing your schedule..
I'd say it evens gets our relationship stronger because we have our own space while sharing things together, and to me this is the perfect alchemy...

So, bottom line for me, be honest right away if you're getting involve with somebody and tell that person about your hobby(ies)...he/she doesn't like it? Then this is not the one to get involve with...and when there is kids, there is always time to squeeze in some hobby time, and when they grow older, you can get them into it too...

I mean...how do you tell your new partner you are a 30 year old geek who loves to paint little men. Most girls just laugh.
I'm 24, so it's not so bad ;) Anyway I had to take up 7th Sea again to have an excuse to meet the cute single girl that was playing in my friends' group a few months back. I never really enjoyed the whole pen and paper role play thing until there was a very cute ulterior motive involved. Some times it's pretty surprising when I think it's been like 4 months already. Doesn't seem like it!

It's a pretty fun relationship though. Today I went to the local GW to pick up some scenery for our club's tourney before they close for the night, and it turns out one of the really cool kids who used to work/still games there was turning 18. So I call up Caitlin and she comes to meet us at the pub, we have a few drinks, she totally holds her own with a group of like a dozen gamers she has never met before, and then we go back to my place and laugh our asses off watching Maverick on my iMac (awesome older flick, and Red Dead Redemption put me in the mood for a funny/campy Western). She doesn't necessarily know what the hell I'm talking about all the time with the hobby, but I can hold my own when she's talking WoW and she can handle it when I talk Warhammer so life is pretty good. We have our fun and know just enough about each other's hobbies to get by :D

I have a 14 month year old and still find time to paint but it's WAY more limited. I have to train at 5am now too. Thank god for a 24hr gyms!

I figure, if you really want to do something, you WILL find time for it. Generally it's when he's sleeping or at nusery school. Heck, I even paint in my work breaks sometimes since I can find a totally seperate office cubicle and paint away (I really don't care what people think or say helps!)

I really hate it tbh. It's not even a good idea either since the fluid in your spine increases injury etc. IIRC optimum times for training are 3 hours after waking or 8 based on CNS response or some rubbish.

It's no fun doing rest paused hack squats at 6am... spewed a few times now :/ It's hard to get enough food in as well to fuel the workout. but still, adjusted to it now.;
