@ Greenone: Horses look good so far, one of the things i like to do is cut off the grassy parts that attach to the hooves, I think it looks better but thats just a personal preference.
@ Ghaffasa: utramarine looks wicked, can\'t wait to see him finished.

Well after looking at tony\'s gass NMM and Starks333\'s silver NMM thread I decided I\'d give NMM another try. The gold looks absolutely terrible in the picture (theres no white along the bottom, and only a very little bit along the top), I\'m really not sure why, must be the scanner. The blade looks pretty close maybe a little less contrasty than in real life. Anyways, would love to hear what you all think. I\'m still not sure about it, I think it looks too cartoonish, and I can usually get better effects with real metals in less than half the time...

Overall I think the model is truly fantastic. If it were one of my works I\'d have it proudly displayed. Since it\'s not my model I can, of course, find some suggestions (is there a model we can\'t find suggestions for?):

The skin is amazing. Don\'t change it. The cuts and/or scars could use a little more depth - consider some very dark brown, if they\'re old wounds, in the center and/or some pink along the edge.

I can\'t tell if the back piece is supposed to be a tattoo or paint. I think for paint it\'s too clean and for a tattoo it\'s too rough though. Hard to explain but I\'d be willing, if you\'re interested, via PM.

The rust on the blade is also fantastic. Nice application of green near the handle.

Maybe a bit more gore on the stump hand? Or sculpt a bit of bandage?

Truly exceptional work. Glad I got to give feedback.

Ok some feedback.
Some parts are fantastic! The pants are really well done especially - both the highlights and the freehand. I like the skin but feel it needs more contrast. Either deeper shadows or brighter highlights.
The belt, boots and wrap around his stump look messy (the belt most of all).
His eyes look unfinished, even if leaving them white you still need to define their shape better.

Still overall a very nice effective job.

@emopainterguy: Yes, I think these look like crap too, but I always though they we\'re needed or else the horses would tip over, think I can remove those without having to place stumps or rocks on the base?

@GreenOne: As long as there are two hooves on the ground it should be fine, if not you can always leave the shortest one (in the second and third picture the front hoof for example) and try hiding it by putting static grass around it. If the riders are plastic one hoof on the ground might actually be fine, if the riders are metal one hoof might be a problem but two is fine. I haven\'t had a chance to see the Brettonian horses up close so I\'m making assumptions based on the Empire horses... Hope that helped.

Any comments/criticisms on my crappy attempt at NMM lol?

emo, your NMM seems great for a first try! As I have never tried it before, I can\'t be a very good critic, but from what I can see it effectivel fulfils its purpose: to look very much like metal.

I wouldn\'t say it was my first attempt lol, I\'ve tried a couple times before before I knew how to blend, or really understood the technique. It always came out looking more like stone, I\'m quite happy with this attempt but I really don\'t know if I\'d have the patience to try it on a whole mini...

Here\'s the latest thing I\'m doing. I am keeping the colors bright and cartoonish. Trying to avoid using much black at all and do 99% of the shading using color. Trying to pull off a 3 light source OSL. These Rackham mini\'s are a sheer pleasure to work on.

I think it\'s important to know that colored light mixes differently than colored paint. Light is an additive medium, and paint is subtractive. So with paints when yellow and blue mix they make green, but with light it would make white. So when painting your light sources when they overlap dont mix the two paints together, but use the additive mixing color (may be a little trickier, but overall would look more realistic).

To be completely honest it confuses the heck out of me lol... The subtractive colors dont seem to be right to any color wheel I\'ve ever seen...

Thanks for the ideas. This photo is VERY early in the process of really working out the kink\'s.

As to additive and subtractive, I hear you, but the 3rd lightsource, being that the blue is much darker and at the terminator between light and dark, would combine with the yellow one and make green. Were they more equaly matched tone wise and comming from similar angles there would more of a lightening and decrease in the color shift/saturation. I really wanted this to have a very saturated, colorful look - cartoonish. I have dont this in the past on canvas and had it work quite well.

well here\'s plans for a different kind of WIP project. (not a mini) once i find out shipping im probaly going to put an order in for the head and base after wich i can get the peice of wood made up and make it! im going to be making the 85 pattern and no im not fancying it up as i want to make it historicaly acurate! should be nice when completed once i get the varios bits il\'l post those too! :bouncy:
