Would this fly?

i had a really weird dream where i was painting a mini, but i was painting it in JUST black, white and shades of grey... then i got an idea to paint a mini to look like it was cell-shaded. Both the ideas have me wondering how it would turn out... what do you\'all think?

After extensive testing, I have come to the conclusion that minis don\'t fly, even when painted in only blacks and whites. :innocent:

Before you start, be advised that black and white are in the top 3 hardest colors to highlight and shade.

This actually came up before, and somewhere on CMON is a photo of a mini done as if from a black and white film. If anyone else remembers that could you put a link here?

very odd...

I have been seriously thinking about this very topic just recently.

I think it could be very interesting, but like u4-welcome said, those are some of the toughest shading colors...

I remember reading an article about this in a magazine called \"Amazing Figure Modeler\"

http://www.amazingmodeler.com/

Anyhow, the article dealt with some of the \'classic universal monsters\'. Boris Karloff as frankenstien and Bela Lugosi as Dracula. The artist painted these kits as if you were looking at the old B&W movies, and I think the effect was incredible...

But, the scale of those miniatures is much greater than that of \'our\' minis. The smaller scale miniatures seem to have to have \'overexaggeration\' to make them stand out, but it doesn\'t mean it cannot be done.

What I was planning on doing was finding a color pic of whichever mini I had decided to try this on. Then, using a photo editor, just convert it to \"grayscale\" and use that as a guide for the paint.

I hope you try it out Itchy, and let us see the results. I will try it too, just to see what I can come up with....

good luck!

ps..If I can find the article I was mentioning, I will see if there are any helpful tips to latch onto...

I have painted a miniature once using only black and white and it was a good way to learn the blending tecnique.
Here\'s the result:

Shameless self-promotion - my \"Explorer\":

It\'s image #16535 - not half as good as DragonPaint\'s, but it is a very different subject so I thought I\'d show it as well. You learn a lot about light and shadow from trying this technique, in \"real\" art it\'s called grisaille.

Bugger - I think the colour has just gone on my monitor :(

BTW - nice looking models, especially Dragonpaints. If only I could see it in colour

Excellent examples!

@dragonpaint....um WOW!

@NSA...great example. This seems to be a perfect mini for such an attempt. Grisaille huh? Could you pronounce that for me? This is how I would say it \"gray scale\" lol

Thank you all for the nice words about my mini :)

Well, to prevent a flame from Ipaintmini we can start painting a \"Grisaille\" miniature and post the result on CMON in the next two weeks.
Sure it helps to learn how to blend and where put the shadows so.... why not?

Do I feel a contest coming on???

I think this could be a really cool idea for a painting contest. It would be bugger hard but could also be really fun and as the others have said certainly educational.

Cheers,
Grumb:cool:

From my limited knowledge of the romance languages, I expect it\'s \"griz-EYE\" or \"griss-EYE\".

Edit: from my link: (pr. greez-eye\', or griz-eye\')

Mmm, monochrome. I\'ve been tempted to attempt this but I haven\'t come across the right mini.

I might try to do my WOTC OOP Black Dragon in monochrome.
