Wulfsaga - Men of the Lake

Hi Everyone!
I'd like to share some pictures from my miniatures workbench, A.K.A the dining table... (sorry to my g.f. she's lamenting we now have to eat dinner on the couch, but needs must!)
Just now getting back into painting, after a year's absence. Looks like a few of my 10 year old paint pots have finally dried up. How could you Ultramarines Blue! I never even opened you and just this year you've decided to solidify?

Anyway, it all started with a massacre...

... a sight I hope never to see when they reach the battlefield. This has been my first experience with resin finecast. Being a die-hard metal fan (I even avoided plastics where possible) I was initially skeptical about the substance, but it's not nearly as brittle as I thought.
So yes, I did go mental and clipped out 40 warriors in one sitting!

Bit of sculpting to do here, some will need more than others. A clay shaper was handy for smooth cloth areas.

And on to the painting! I was a bit concerned my old can of Chaos Black spray would dissolve the resin. It certainly dissolves greenstuff, so I had carefully painted all the green areas with some ordinary pot paint. Couldn't be bothered to do a test on a piece of resin sprue (I think I'm getting stupider as time goes on) threw caution to the wind and resolved that if the spray dissolved the resin I would just buy new ones.

As it happens all was good and I moved on to painting the eyes and flesh. I'm always trying to look for shortcuts. This time I realised if I paint all the whites of the eyes first, then go back and do all the pupils I don't have to swap from black to white paint so much.

I tried to vary the skin tones as much as possible, building up from bases of Emperor's Children (pink) and Red Gore (dark red) a 10 year old pot I revived with water.

Anyway, here are the results so far. Love to know what you think!

Just love the moral ambiguity of these miniatures. I could easily imagine them fighting the Laketown Guards, selling each other out, corruption. There's a lot of possibilities here...

Cool. You are off to a good start with the skin tones. Try not to go insane painting this many models at once.

Thanks KruleBear! Although I feel it's painting the models that keeps me sane... :D
Once I've finished these militia I plan to use them in a skirmish or two before completing the main force

You must already be mad, any more than 1 model on the go and I collapse in a stressed heap.

Awesome stuff on the skin tones so far

Tonight I'm listening to 16th Century lute music from Venice, a real life lake town of sorts!
Alle Venetia Recercar Primo, its on Spotify, very relaxing. What are you guys listening to?
I reworked the face of the guy in cream.

Bit happier with him now having given him some eyebrows and added a touch of darker red in some recesses.

Really having fun with the colours on these guys. I painted 40 Warriors of Minas Tirith a while back... so much silver and black, so this is a pleasant change!

I can spot a couple of mould lines on the weapons haft's.

Colour wise, perhaps avoid having very similar shades on the wood and hair of models, particularly as the wood grain detail is at a similar scale to each lock of hair.

As to actual painting, I'm not qualified enough to offer much.

Absolutely love the miniatures themselves

Tonight's effort. Went to see Trainspotting 2, I won't draw any parallels between painting miniatures and addiction. So bit of a quicker job to try and keep on track for the battle on Sunday. I'm starting to realise I spend most of my time mixing paint. Need to buy more colours, possibly from a lot of different ranges...

Hi guys, I just did another 2 hours on this guy since the flesh stage. I tried out some techniques which seemed to make the process faster, such as working with dark colours all over first, so I could work with the same base mixture for the browns, adding a touch of a different colour when I needed a variation. This seemed to save a bit of mixing time! I'll need to finish four other models tomorrow, start basing in the evening, then complete basing on Sunday morning. Fingers crossed it goes to plan...

The colors are nice and you have the right shapes worked in. To take it up another knotch you'll need to work to get the transitions to the highlights smoother.

One way to do this is with a glaze. Take a midtone between your dark and highlight and get it watery thin. Then slowly work it over the transition area. Let it dry. Repeat until the transition is smoother.
