Anyone here ever heard of a Garbage Plate ???

This actually is a Rochester, New York USA original, much like Buffalo wings are to Buffalo.

Take potatoes, cube them and fry them ot use french fries. Add a side of macaroni salad ( macaroni, chopped onion, chopped carrots, mayo). Next add two cooked beef hamburgers or two cheeseburgers or two hot dogs, and cover the whole thing with hot sauce ( like a spicy beef soup/sauce) and a few squirt of mustard. Yes it sounds and looks gross, but after an all night drinking binge, there is nothing finer than a Nick Tahoe\'s garbage plate !!!! Anyone here ever hear of this delicacy???

Heck, yeah, garbage plate. I usually pick it up at Irondiquoit Hots in Rochester NY. The one by the pier\'s quite good, too, can\'t remember what it\'s called now.

It occurs to me that most of american recipes are variations of \"take big fat hamburger, add stuff on top\". Not that I\'d have a problem with that.

Disgusting food ? When I was in China I tried some kind of insect assortment. Ok, so scorpion was ok (though I was a bit afraid the poison would kill me), but the fried larva... :|~ It looks like an oversized maggot, fried, and tastes horrible. Bleh. Bleh, bleh, and yuck.

I have a friend who is from Thailand. He likes insects, rice rats and a sallad with ants in it. I haven\'t tried it, though...

In that case I\'ve experienced America alright. First time I went there I went Iowa city-San Francisco-New York City by Greyhound. SF to NYC was a single 6 day trip since I had to get my plane there.
It was a long ride but I really enjoyed it (well, apart from the fact that we only stopped at hamburger joints) since it was great to see how the landscape changes from East to West. Hmm, I\'ve done US by car, bus, plane and train. Anybody have an interesting suggestion for my next trip?

And since we\'re talking about food. In Berkeley some friends took me to some breakfast place (Wendy\'s?) where I had pancakes with syrop. That was the first time I couldn\'t get up after a breakfast. So heavy! Very nice though. For the Canadians here: compliments on your maple syrop: it\'s delicious!

Hehe, they say that anything that is remotely edible has been used at least once in Chinese cuisine. I admire your taste for adventure. Being partly Chinese I\'ve seen strange things but I couldn\'t stomach insects.
About rat, in Belgium they have recipes for water-rabbit. What some people don\'t realise is that this is a \"friendly\" name for muskus-rat.

Somebody mentioned Tofu ice. I actually love Tofu and what you can do with it (fill with minced meat and herbs and the fry - yum) but I think I\'m going to stick with the traditional Chinese recipes!

French-Chinese? Such a coïncidence, so am I.
Just wondering, in both the Chinese and French culture food is very important (which is why I post that much on this thread ). Unlike the Dutch where food quality would be the first thing to go out of the door if they have to save money. Since we have a multicultural group here: how\'s that in other countries?

Haven\'t had croc, but I\'ve been told it\'s good meat which does have a little bit of fish taste to it. Is that so?

Well, I thought it was more like chicken, actually, but it may depend on the way it\'s cooked... It was a sort of soup with noodles and crocodile.

I find it interesting how breakfast food changes so much from East to West here. Going to Florida, it was oatmeal and pancakes in the bus terminals every day until about eastern texas. Then, all of a sudden, it switches to grits and hash browns. I love grits \'cause of that trip.

Giving up taste? Depends on how poor and young you are, at least at my college. I don\'t want to think about how many boxes of mac and cheese I consumed (store brand, mind you) my freshman and sophomore year. My guts will probably never rot with all the salt and MSG I consumed then. By the time I graduated, I still didn\'t have any money, but I got clever and found a fiancee who knew how to cook from scratch. We spent more time cooking, but we just weren\'t willing to eat the boxed poo anymore..

Recipes

Here\'s a good one that\'s GOOD for you.
Protein pancakes -actually taste(imho) better than regular.
1/2 cup of oatmeal
1/2 cup of cottage cheese
6 egg whites or 4 reg eggs
mix in a blender and use as regular batter.
Serves 2.
Good with sugar free maple syrup and natural peanut butter.

Around here it\'s breakfast tacos.

A warm, soft flour tortilla filled with your choice of any of the following:

scrambled eggs
cheddar cheese
potatos (chunks or shredded)
bacon
ground sausage
chorizo (a Hispanic sausage)
salsa (the spicier the better)
Mexican style rice
refried beans (pinto or black)
grilled onion
grilled bell pepper

or pretty much anything else you could probably dream up.

My usual is a refried pinto bean, scrambled egg, cheddar cheese, bacon, and salsa.

I have to admit I tried BBQ larvae during a food festival here in Singapore, about 1995. The vendors said it was some sort of Australian beetle larvae. It was quite good - crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside. The taste wasn\'t half-bad either, sort of salty-sweet, with a nice, tangy finish.

I\'ve had scorpions, too. Great stuff. Eat it like chips, same texture. Too bad they were a bit bland, though.

For all those adventurous folks out there, I highly recommend bat (very smoky meat, thick and sticky).
