Your miniature preference, how do you get it?

Something I've noticed about myself in the last few years....

Whatever I seem to be 'into' at the moment for entertainment is now determining my miniatures interests.

For instance...Played a bunch of Red Dead Redemption on XBOX, now I've gotten into several cowboy minis (never interested me before)

Started getting into reading Marvel Comics online, and now I've purchased several 'knight models Marvel heros' to correspond.

Zombie movies and Left 4 Dead has accounted for my modern zombie horde, discovering Lovecraft has me looking for Cthulhu-esque stuff...

Currently reading the Conan stories and sure enough, I'm trying to find Conan minis now. I haven't been into a 'fantasy' mini for at least 5 years!

I think it's a couple of reasons why this is...

1. Miniatures have become less typecast and span a wide range of subject manner.
2. I have a single track mind, and strangely it's not boobies....

So what say you? Do you stick with the same tried and true mini genre, or does other influences determine your preference?

It really depends on the purpose of the minis. Back when I first got into minis, it was battletech and 40k tabletop games, so I didn't look at anything that was outside of those lines. But my recent return is more about painting than playing, so I buy minis based purely on what looks like fun to paint. It's why I have all kinds of minis sitting around, from many different manufacturers.

I spent a couple of decades buying figures that were ostensibly for use in D&D games. Because I had fantasy figures, that fed through to fantasy skirmish/battle games, which I've barely ever played but did influence purchasing. It's why I own so many dwarves :)

More recently my basket has varied from that, primarily because of the internet and places like here. I don't think it's other media that's influencing me so much as the idea of playing games with them though. I'm not a zombie film fan but have bought zed hunters because I want to play games (plus they'll do for Cthulu modern) and like the idea of developing small warbands, a la Mordheim, which I only discovered as it was discontinued. Some 15mm WWII stuff lurking as well for skirmish that was good for a few games.

I bought rocket pack orcs because I thought they were fun & would make nice basing elements for my flying beastmen, so I suppose there are bits that are purely painting based rather than gaming. I don't really have much sci-fi stuff at all though, nor is it a genre of fiction that I read or particularly seek out in film. I enjoyed Space Hulk first time around though, having only then discovered the Alien/s films :D Lack of sci-fi might actually be how heavily influenced I was by the original plastic Space Marine Rogue Trooper/40K box set, because I thought they looked crap. Beaky marines with round shoulder pads & silly big missile launchers. A guy at school had them and I was far happier daydreaming in front of the smudgy Citadel mail order sheet for metal orcs (it was on pale green paper as I recall) that arrived the same term :D

Although I own too many minis, I think I've managed to avoid too many compulsive purchases or hording leanings and will certainly not be collecting full ranges of anything :D Nor am I an investment buyer, for either long term gain or quick shifting on ebay.

I'll go with gaming, then painting, then external influences I think.

Cheers, B.

I buy for my table top wargaming, of course, and for Dungeons and Dragons use.
The rest, I've been mostly buying on an 'Ooo, that looks like it'll be fun/challenging to paint.'
Intricate details have become fascinating for me to try to paint well.
One day, I may even manage it.

Id say I started out with buying the lotr miniatures because I was into lotr and they seemed like fun to paint and I was curious about the game. Then I started going increasing to minis that I though would be cool to paint, though i think this was influenced mostly b the great painting i saw on here. More recently I have decided I dont really like mini gaming and have been moving towards minis that dont have too much detail or that fit with random diorama ideas I have.

hehehe...I too started with LOTR. But then I started collecting minis that I liked the sculpts...no real reason or game, I just liked them. Plus, being a published author and writing historical, sci-fi, fantasy novels, if I stumbled across a mini that was similar to what I had in my brain of one of my characters, I'd get it.

Painting model horses....well, I'm just a horse nut and have been since I was a kid - so I'm just hopeless there. ;)

LoTR....I am actually sort of "forcing" all three upon myself to keep me in the fantasy type mind set while I'm working on my sculpt. Really, any type of fantasy movie works. But, I gaurantee you, if I were to put in a WWII movie......I would almost immediately want to grab a tank model from the stash and get started. Tis prolly why I have three Star Trek builds started.... one of which is quite major being that it is halfway to being fully lit........:(
So, yes, what I'm into is very dependant on movies, video games, etc. Definately....

I just go with 'wow, that looks cool, I think I might have a go'. And of course, most of that just sits in their respective boxes for ages ...

Ditto to the 2 posts above. Rarely, something i've read will influence it, some kind of fluff or whatever. Generally tends to run on aesthetics though.

Just about sums me up too.
In the 90's I was buying for gaming as that's what my kids did, now I buy because I like a mini and actually want to paint it.

Another stipulation of mine that's also been mentioned, is that I must be "into" the mini in question. The sculpt, what/how much detail, what kind of armor, etc etc before I will consider buying it. I just can't seem to paint a mini that I don't really like.

I'm amazed no-one's stipulated "Must have boobs" as an option yet. Especially given the common store search words I clocked the other day!

As much as I'm fond of sweater pillows, I have to say that 'cheesecake' models usually do not appeal to me. On a rare occasion they do, but most are just plain ridiculous.

Eh yeah, never appeal to me full stop. It ain't natural for such a massive fan of T&A... Rather be painting a robot dinosaur with laser beams attached to its face or something.
