Your workbench, lighting, and other stuff

Ok - I\'m curious. What do you guys and gals use for a work area? Do you have a separate room for a \"studio\"? Or are you like me and completely take over the kitchen table, or a desk in your room? Do you get so many projects going that you hardly have room to work? (I think it would be fun to post pics of your work area - who has the most crowded, who has the cleanest, most organized?)

Work area lighting? What do you use? I don\'t have good natural lighting, besides I usually paint in the evening. I\'ve got a ceiling fan overhead, with large daylight bulbs but man they put out the heat!

I used to have a desk light with a daylight bulb in it that had a magnifying glass in the middle. I can\'t paint while looking through the magnifying glass - it destroys my depth perception - but I\'d use the magnifying glass to check details, paint, check again. I may get that thing back out. Does anyone use magnification to help them out?

Right now I use an Ott Light on my table. I absolutely love it since it was developed for artists, reveals truer colors, and it was reasonably priced at Wal Mart.

So what about you guys? What do you use? What does your work bench/studio look like? Post pics if you can! I\'ll see if I can get one when I get home this eve.

:bouncy:

Cheers,
Kat

There are a lot of threads with pictures of people\'s work spaces. A quick search will give you plenty to look at.

I don\'t have a picture of my workspace handy. There may be one in some old thread, but I don\'t know if the picture is still available...

I have a dedicated hobby room that I share with my girlfriend and her sewing machine and we also have our computer in there. I have a large desk space in front of a window, so I get natural light when the sun\'s up. In addition to that, I have two desk lights with daylight bulbs in them.

I think it\'s essential to have a dedicated space for your stuff. Even a small space is better than having to put your stuff away after each session. Having your own space means you can use short intervals of time for painting. Painting will be much more relaxing as you can just leave everything where it is, and you don\'t have to worry about being in the way for something else.

Woops! Sorry! I did do a search but my terms were either too broad with zillions of hits or too narrow with zero hits.

I did find one about lighting but it was from 2004 - I was just wondering if there was updated info. ;)

And yeah, a dedicated work area is important. I\'m fortunate in that I can pretty much take over the kitchen table. Cleaning everything up afterward, or even getting everything back out to start really puts a crimp in the desire to work.

Thanks for the response, sorry for the repeat post. (But I\'m still interested in the responses. lol)

Me too! Except my room is filled with boxes of stuff finally recovered from storage, most of which seem to be minis or mini related! :)

Indeed, I\'m getting another fairly large table for my bedroom, to replace the sofa which noone ever uses (it will be moved to the living room) so I will have about 4-5 square metres of desk space if I\'m lucky. This will also mean I can have a spray booth, so I can do airbrushing with proper thinners and prime stuff when the weather is nasty. Well, that\'s the plan, and then getting more IKEA filing cabinets for minis and equipment so I can fit a glass cabinet where my old big chest of miniature drawers thingie is.

I\'ve got a 624sq ft Garage all to myself. Fully heated, and messy as hell. I use most of the space to collect dust and junk, with about 3 seperate 4ft areas for airbushing, priming, and painting proper.

lol No...Age of Conan. Beautiful, gorgeous graphics, nice fight system, decent enough story but buggy as HELL. I played for a long time but quit after I bought my horse. Between him and trying to paint - who has the time???

Well, now\'s your chance to prove them wrong! ;)

My workspace is also my desk complete with laptop and assorted other crap, and I have a one-room flat so it\'s.... cosy! There\'s probably pix of it in one of those threads. However, when I lived in Japan I ended up using a built-in wardrobe as a workspace! It had sliding doors and a wide, solid shelf at approximately the right height and with nothing above it, and it was about the only place I could find! lol Worked well tho. For lighting, I have a little, fold-up daylight lamp I bought off ebay and a taller fluorescent lamp I got from Ikea that\'s awful because it makes everything yellow. Both are getting liberally covered in paint! I\'d love a seperate place/space for all my hobby stuff - I like doing handicrafts too - but it won\'t happen just yet. :( I\'m moving into a TWO-room apartment in September, tho. Two rooms! I won\'t know what to do with myself! lol
