Zab's Damn it to hell! WIP

I think we can get away with both words, because without a bit of the aggravation of wanting to work on all these cool projects at once, there would be no fuel to drive us on. My problem is finishing one project before I move to the next, hence why I have an entire ork and skaven army primed and assembled and in need of painting hahaha. Anyways I want to start a wip today and hopefully get some help to keep me on track with one project that needs some completion. OH THE INSANITY!

Maybe that's where my A-type, anal retentive personality helps. I must finish what I start. I don't know why, I just have to. :bulgy-eyes:

Hi Zab,
Sleeping Chibi looks wicked man and Kurt is great too. I got a bunch of those little Space Crusade gretchen, when i get around to my Ork army...
Being on a site like this certainly helps motivate me to want to paint, aggravates and inspires to try and achieve something :)

Thanks man. I have been ebay snatching a lot of RT era minis recently. Someday i might even paint a few  God I'm such a slow painter!

what's RT era?

Edit: Rogue Trader?

A bygone age, when every space marine seemed to hunched over, where painted space ork armies looked like an explosion in a paint factory, before the days when EVERY miniature painted by the Eavy Metal dept had to have red on it :p

Yes, Rogue Trader.

Ahhhh... back to 40k! So I broke out the AB to practice a bit and see what the limits of my patriot 105 arrow are. I was just blocking in colors working on control and flow so they look really rough right now, but I'll go in and clean things up with bristles this week. I'm using a lot of pale desaturated colors to keep them dark, grimy and faded. Their skin will be fairly pale as they are slaves of the Night Lords and live in near constant darkness. And yes, i could have masked with silly putty which i had on hand, but I wanted to try for control and get a feel of the spray pattern and overspray at various PSI settings.

So here is what I have learned. The .3 tip can do very fine work, but I need to get some flow improver for viscosity when working at low PSI. Even very thinned paint sticks and dries and splatters at low PSI if you only use water. I am curious to see how the .2 nozzle on the velocity I am getting for Christmas behaves too. Looks like a trip to Curry's for some createx AB medium and probably a handful of other fun stuff. i can't stay on task in an art supply store anymore. It used to just be hobby and hardware stores where The Lady Inquisitor had to chaperon, but now it's art stores too ~sigh~
Anyway, these guys will only be table top jobs for my DV set so pretty quick and dirty (quick for me could be 4-8 weeks or longer).

Cheers.:smirk:

Dude, does DV come with 20 cultists? Yikes!

Go check out awesomepaintjob's mix for AB thinner. My experience is that straight water is not that great. On the other hand my Ab experience is not that great either. I look forward to trying the AB then wash then AB again technique that he uses too.

I have some really early space orks in the garage. They are about an inch and a half tall. Not sure if they are first gen. I love the "RT" Tech Priest.

Nice little conversions there Zab. I know what you mean about art supply places, hardware stores. There is a part of my brain examining and analysing every object for potential hobby useful-ness.

Hey Zab.

Love your work man. Really love the dragon and his environment.
A Question what did you use for texture material of the green moss on your skull? Because i don't think you mentions it or i just read right over it xD.
Keep up the awesome work. I'm a Fan

Thanks! I used a green flock that I had from woodland scenics from ages ago. Any ol' flock will work of course. Just make sure you use flock and not static grass as that has more of a hairy look, where the flock is nice and clumpy ;)

YEah ha!
Looking good How much restraint do you have, desaturated FTW. The nurgle chaos lord wip is a good reference (as you know).

I went down to the local hardware store and brought some more Floetrol for my AB work. Little story, I had some left over from painting the house last summer so I tried it in my no name AB instead of the BIG house painting one (good for painting an army hahahahaha) So any way I think it was 16NZD for a liter and works well. I have used about 50ml so far a little goes a long way. I have tried it with the brush also and its not too bad for glazing.

I have done abit of work to the warhammer chaos lord's armor with some AB glazing, its tricky, I have found I got some good results from reading camelson's tutorial about painting armor with an AB then washes then AB then Brush to finish.

Oh well, at least I am certain that I am done with gaming and painting armies after this boxed set is painted. Have you heard that 7th edition of 40k is coming in September next year? I thought I was joking that I would have my 6th ed DV set done by 10th edition, but maybe I'm some kind of prophet?!

Cheers and Happy new year to you all if I don't get in much more WIP before 2014!

Looking good Zab! What's the story with the Secret Weapon paints? Is that "Drying Blood" or some special new quick dry blend?

I like the browns and olive greens. And don't worry, i only have two plastic imperial guard painted that i started from 1st edition.

Thanks guys. Demi the story is that I got a bunch of coupons and discount codes and finally decided to buy the secret weapon washes. I figured the cultists would be hard to screw up since they are just tabletop jobs and they didn't have to match the rest of the set so I could branch out and experiment a little. That probably means they will turn out the best of all the minis in the set
