Thanks guys! I think i will stick with the GS flames, they fit the cartoony look i am going for. I'm gonna save the waves for a classic ragnar or leman that i scored off ebay. Maybe do a rocky cold fenrisian coast type deal. I can't tell you how happy i am to be done with those night lords -oh god look at all the cultists sitting there :sick:

Then I added some fire in places to provide with a reason for the under lit paint job I have in mind. Other wise people would be all "Why did you highlight it in reverse?"

Well, this is the most time i have put into a base is a very long while. It was fun - I think. Let's hope it doesn't look like crap when I paint it ;)

Thanks guys. i was going to just prime it but i was thinking it needs more flames for the under lit look, then my basement flooded so i had to put off the priming to tear up wet carpet and dehumidify. Is that a sign from that gods to add more fire before priming or just a weird coincidence?! :bulgy-eyes:

Added a bit more fire. I think here is where I will prime the base. There is enough now that I can do some decent forced lighting if I keep the overall colors toned down and dark then push the OSL from the flames...

In other news I had to move my temp work area upstairs because the industrial strength dehumidifier gave a couple of cocaine addict type nose bleeds o_O
What can I say? I am a delicate flower.

After tearing up old linoleum tile for 4 hours I decided I had earned some hobby time! So I settled into my hobby room to do some air brushing...

I primed the base and did what looks like some pre-shading with the fire to save myself headaches/layers with the brush later.

Them I did some very basic base coating, shading and highlights on the skulls. The pics actually don't show the contrast that well, but I swear to God it's there.

I think I'll lay down the base, shade and rough highlights on the knight's armour next. I like how quickly things jumped once I had the DV Chosen in the shading down stage and I think I'll do that same with this so I can take it darker if I like and really exaggerate the contrast. Now that I'm at the painting stage I think this one will go like sh** through a goose! :giggle:

Wow, that has got to be the harshest place I've ever seen someone try to paint minis in.. and I loose stuff on my table for weeks.
But at least you have a vent hood- I've been second hand inhaling fumes from all sorts of things. Luckily, I haven't noticed any side effects. It are looking gud, zab!

I think the trick is to get your shading first and seal with some heavy satin varnish. I think you need a lot to give it the depth. But my reaper full gloss looks like yellow cellophane. so some mid value varnish I guess is the way to go. Then come back over that and paint the foam.

I'll do a little walk through if I can find some time this weekend and outline the tools and techniques. That dio is incredible. I have flagged that for reference when I come back to doing the water for my other project.
*EDIT*
Found a bit of time ;) So you take a blob of green stuff press/roll it into the general shape you want the fire to be and then use some sculpting tools or color shapers to press it firmly onto your object. If you don't have the silicon shapers use some chap stick on your metal tools to keep them from sticking to the GS (and minty fresh).

or even a few pointy things like a tooth pick, a nail, a screw a BBQ skewer or even a well sharpened pencil! And start poking, pinching, twisting and pulling your GS until it takes on the flame shape you want! Very simple and very effective. Hope that makes sense!

thanks for tanking the time and explaining! To sounds a bit difficult because i'm totally inept at sculpting, but i want to try in the future.. your flames looks the most realistic so far.

agreed. And I have an almost immediate need for this knowledge. So I can finish this little addition to a IMEF trooper.

Also, glad to see you finished the DV Chaos. I got the brute and the one guy done, and gave the rest back to my friend.

It does sound hard, but because GS is so gooey it makes perfect flames. If they come out a little rough from tearing you can brush them down with a thin coat of nail polish remover to smooth them down a bit. Just try not to use too much or you might damage any plastic around it. I tried using apoxie sculpt but it wasn't elastic enough so i'll save that for waves and textures. Honestly, I'm pretty new to sculpting. I only this year got the nerve to replace all my dark angels shoulder icons from the DV set with sculpted angles of redemption icons. Ron over at FromTheWarp has some really great and simple tuts using GS on his blog.

HA! I got them at a store here in Toronto, call Active Surplus. They have all kinds of tools and equipment for electrical and all other odds and ends. Unfortunately it's all in loose bins. I shed a lot of blood and learned some new curse words picking out all those tools (some of which are double ended as i discovered the hard way) but it was worth it because all those tools only cost me $25 CAD!!! (and a pint of blood).
