Wow Zab. You are a ninja base maker. I have so many witty humorous responses but I am enjoying the look and feel of all the bases. Needless to say the cave is my favorite and omg its amazing. I love the water effect base and think that is going great. Also I am glad you got a new painting group forming. When you want one bad enough I suppose you make your own. Always a joy to see your work and can't wait for more.

Thanks gang. I like making bases a little too much i think. Need to get back to painting soon ;) I'm heading to the store tonight there is a construction play set that looks absolutely perfect. Hopefully I can convince The Lady Inquisitor and The Agent of Chaos to come with me. If not, I'll brave the rain and storms and my lovely plague and hit the toy store unsupervised!

Thanks ;) The dvds are amazing to watch and make it pretty clear how James does the amazing work he does. I'm eager to give it a shot myself on a couple of bones minis.

This was mainly a military model show, but there was a strong gaming presence too. It was a small, well attended inaugural show and I hope Alex and the guys put on more events. Funny story time: After watching a few game demos like deep wars and xwing and buying a few things (including a stupid card game for The Agent Of Chaos, that I cannot for the life of me win -AND I SWEAR I'M NOT LOSING ON PURPOSE!!! called Gopher It!) we went out for lunch. I brought the whole family cause they wanted to see and have no fear nerd hordes, being nerds themselves. After lunch on the way back to the show The Lady Inquisitor's car took a hit when a heat shield fell off her car bounced off the road and took out her muffler!!! Fortuitously we were right next to the dealership so we took it in to get fixed right away. That was at 130. The painting comp winners we being announced at 4pm my dad and i hauled ass to get there, but I guess they had moved it up because it was all well and over when i got there at 330 so i never got to chat with the dude who won as he was just heading out as i was heading in. Next year perhaps things will be a bit smoother for me :) Anyway really happy to finally score a win with that diorama! And the fact the Alice won something too makes it even more special to The Lady Inquisitor since that piece was a gift for her :p

Now bases, where was I...
I found some stuff for my dwarf's base but i feel like the pylon is too big even for a dwarf and the sign would be better slightly shorter and more converted...

I made the plasticard look like welded metal by using Liquid GS in the joints and then as it dried i pushed it into the joints more with a toothpick to give it a welded texture...

What say you folks? I wouldn't put both on that base - even one might feel too cluttered. I am leaning towards the sign, but remain unconvinced by the voices in my head.

Now Digga, you said something about mushrooms on the base for chuckles and I couldn't find ones online that I liked to I sculpted a bunch myself. Here's a little breakdown of what and how I did them: I used apoxie sculpt and GS for different sizes and styles. The GS ones needed wire armatures. I sculpted the stems first by just rolling little balls of putty into long uneven rolls since nature doesn't really do symmetry.

The next day once those were dry I rolled some more balls of putty up and placed them on top of the stems and used my fingers and various sculpting tools to squish and shape them. I even made a morel type by texturing a blob of putty on a stem with a piece of cork. Morel is a type of mushroom. My mom used to pick mushrooms in the forests near the cottage and cook 'em up when I was a kid while I would run around playing ninja. It's a euro thing (she was from Lithuania) and I guess I retained some of that knowledge.

I also made a few that were growing off trees by flattening the balls of putty and sticking them edge wise to the trunks. Some have gills some don't - it's all very random like you would find in nature.

So here are the shrooms on the base. This will really help give chuckles a sense of scale too

Wow a long day for you.
Really stoked for you that you picked up a couple of gongs at an inaugural show.....and looking by the stuff that took gold a pretty tough crowd all round so all the more reason to celebrate.

what! I am stoked too, and super jealous!!! We are moving right now and it's not a huge deal but I really need to get back in my painting groove. New place will have a bunch more space for hobbying.

Glad to see the dragon dio finally got some much deserved recognition.

How old is the agent of chaos?

Nice work on the sign, it's those little details that will make it work. Now I know what you mean by a pylon, in Britain there called traffic cones. Definitely just the sign on the base would work best.
Liking all the mushrooms on Chuckles base

Thanks Webmonkey!

Yeah DR, I'm stoked too :D There were some pretty awesome pieces there (so I heard but many were gone by the time I got back so not a lot of pics) I'll hit up their facebook site later to check for coverage and more pics of the entries :)

Demi, ugh, moving takes forever. I swear we moved 8 years ago and only just unpacked the last few boxes a year or two ago. It's a good time to purge though and "lose" whole boxes of crap. The Agent will be 5 at the end of July and has been painting up a storm for the last month or so. I'm terribly proud of her and her new obsession. Still haven't won a game of gopher it yet! I bet that's why it was like 5 bucks at the show the damn game is cursed!!!!

Thanks Khonner!

Thanks WGS, I'll save the cones for something else (they might work for a 70mm+ figure or two I have lying around) and stick with the sign. I was shocked at how quick and easy the shrooms were to make. I may have to try more of this sculpting thing you guys are on about ;)

Congratulations buddy! I'm proud of you. The signs are looking good to, nice detail on the welding. Mushrooms are quite fun to make and nature is pretty random there are all sorts of mushrooms.
