Weekend workshop with Fernando Ruiz done. HOLY CRAP! He uses acrylics like oils, but with a built in save point. What he does in 24hrs takes me 40+ It was incredible and mind blowing. I thought I was decent at wet on wet? No. And now I can do wet on wet with a save point and a limited palette O_O Retarder is the key NOT medium. RETARDER - and very little or no thinning. The last step is just crazy like a 2BB + wet on wet. It's opened up whole new possibilities, killed my fear of uber contrast and larger scales all in one fell swoop. IF you ever get chance to sit down in a class with this guy sell your F**ing soul to do it. Oh, and he's hilariously inappropriate. Not in a derogatory way, in a very refreshing self deprecating, who else is tried of all this PC bull crap, way. Definitely an adult audience mindset ;) Anyway, I barely scratched the surface of my first 65mm historical, but I can't wait to do more and what's more is I won't be scared or hesitant. Terrible WIP pictures?

Love it, can't wait to see more of how you incorporate that technique. Any particular retarder? There are so many it seems - thick and gel-like or super thin. Every brand seems slightly different. Would be fun to play around with. Also, did you just pop a bunch of allergy meds or vitamins to get your paint palettes you used there? :)

looks great! i used to paint that way with retarder but switched to a slower, more painful way to paint. not sure when it happened lol.

Thanks gang!

Yeah, Sherdy we tried all kinds, but he uses one from Amsterdam by Royal Talens. Looks like water - DOES NOT TASTE LIKE WATER. Seem to keep the paint alive forever. We left it out overnight and it was still active them next day! You can freeze it too and thaw if to keep it active even longer. Funny thing about the pill cases. They work better than normal palettes with the retarder. He specifically had us try our own just to see how much faster the paint dried out even with the retarder and these seem to be the perfect little paint wells. Gum packs would work just as well too. Time for a trip to the dollar store for some expired excel gum...

To be honest Skel, i wouldn't use it on every figure. 28mm would be almost wasted because getting those fine blends would just disappear but i suppose on cloaks and broad areas of armour and if you are doing a lot of freehand then, yes. I think this is a great style for say 54mm and up or for organic areas. I can see me using this on my KD ladies skin even at 28mm just to get super smooth blends with lots of control and the ability to fix mistakes easy.

He fills one of those little pill bubbles about half way with paint and adds 4-6 small drops of retarder. It sounds like a lot but it gets the paint runny without being like a glaze. It is still mostly opaque. Obviously from paint brand to paint brand it will differ but with scale 75 and vallejo that is what he did. It's like painting on a canvas but on a mini instead. I'm going to try out a bunch of retarders to find one locally that works like what he has from Royal Talen...

Fernado's got a great vid on painting Buddha where he goes into his technique on a large scale dwarf. really, really interesting to watch. The 65mm looks great so far. The light on the face is really brilliant

Does he do the glaze of retarder and then wet blend paint over it? cause that was just the craziest thing i have ever seen o_O It was like magic. MAGIC!

Dude! I am so glad you made it to a workshop! It's such a great eye-opener to learn some new techniques and see how other (better) painters approach stuff. Good stuff. I am going to have to try this retarded painting pretty soon.

;)

Love your box Zab and your Tat don't think your gloves are very trendy though , I think if you are wearing them carrying your "tattoo" box people would think your a bit different , a bit of retarder in your mouth does wonders doesn't it....that sounds wrong
