Rider of Rohan - Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers

I cheated by buying TTT game early when my local Barnes & Noble put it out on the shelf early. I figured that I should immediately paint at least on of the models so that I could feel some tangible benefit from getting it early. This mini is painted like most of my troop figures - "low res." I keep the pallate very simple and use strategic brushstrokes for the shading and highlighting - as opposed to blending every little thing. I then go bak and pick out a few details and do them just so the model doesnt look too much like an action figure. I personally rate the figure a 7. I try to use my opinion of my own stuff as a guage when scoring other minis on the site. To make this mini an 8 would require more dramatic and precises blending (there are only 3-4 paint colors from black to highlight here). The metallic colors would be more carefully rendered, and there would be no drybrushing, which is how I did the horses hair. To drop to a 6, I would use mainly downgrade the horse. There is blending there which could be effectively substituted out for some simple ink lining on a brown base coat. I made the base a little better than I normally would, just because I was going to post this guy on the board. The horse took about an hour, the guy about 2.5, for a total of 3.5 hours. Some of that time was spent studying photos and working out what colors went where - so it wasnt all productive time. I could probably shave it down to 2 hours if doing riders production style. Everything could be improved by up grading my photography.

Limited palette or not, I still think this one is great! Everything is clean and bold, 'n yet, natural looking. The shield came out nice and the horse's skintone is great. His legs looks a bit washed out but I think that's photogrophy issues. Tho the rider's leather items could of benefited from a different use of brown to set it apart from the horse's flesh.

Well, yoy pretty much nailed it Jim. He looks very good for two hours of paint time though!

Your right. I used to work on 120mm models, and the shading/highlighting has to be much more subtle to look realistic. Sometimes I fall back on old habits. Though I have to admit I think that the GW effect is over-vibrant for my taste. Personally, I really like effect achieved by steve_dean. I think that is basically the best balance of color and brightness for 25mm work.
