Knight Errant

I specifically painted this figure to be a 5 - and then I even cheated because I added some shading and highlighting (just a wee bit) on the horses barding. My goal was to demonstrate that a figure with no shading or highlighting can still look good (especially in a unit of many on the tabletop) when only painted in solid colors. Note that there is no shading or highlighting on the guy's hair or face, though he does have eyes. The armor is just a simple drybrush over the black undercoat. I also wanted to show this to hopefully offer some encouragement to those who think they have to develop advanced shading & highlighting techniques to either improve their painting or have a nice set of miniatures. This is simply not the case. If you instead practice neatly coloring the mini with solid colors they can look just fine.

OKay Jim, you call it a 5 due to the lack of advanced techniques, which I agree with wholeheartedly, however, your near perfectly straight lines and even coats would still dictate the hand of a master! It is a dead giveaway, so I give you a 6! You are entirely correct though, that advanced techniques are not essential to get a good, solid, crisp looking figure! Newer painters can slowly add "weapons" of technique to their arsenals, but this is a great example of what they should be trying to achieve!

Well done. Very bright and clean. I've found it very difficult to even paint straight lines on a 3D object. Drawing on paper and attemting to do the same on mini's are totally different.

Woops... by the way, I meant that comment not for Jim, but actually for anyone who might be using his minis to get an idea of how to paint or how rating on CMON works. Jim - you're great! I just talk fast and don't think what comes out of my mouth I guess :P
