Dwarf Thane

Hi all, Here's the latest addition to my gallery and newish Dwarven Throng (Careful!). The basic colours for the whole army are that Enchanted type blue and off-white staring with Desert Yellow and working up through Bleached Bone to White. Now, as this guy's fairly important I thought I’d give him a nice regal red cape and TONNES of gold to really try and represent his status. The detail on this model is awesome so I thought there was no real need to do any convering. The idea for the base is stolen straight from the Rackham catalogues. Cork tiles and sand with a touch of static grass for a springtime look and a few natural hessian reeds. Possibly my favourite part of the model is the ruddy nose. Make the little fella look like he's been out in the cold all day, or he's been hitting the sauce a bit too hard. The later is probably the more likely :) Credit to Matt Parkes for the technique. It’s done by making a very thin wash of Magenta ink and Red Gore then layering it up until the desired ruddiness is achieved. The little unpainted pic shows something I’m rather proud of. I had a real quandary about how I would arm him in gaming terms. Hand weapon and shield or Great weapon? I thought the axe is stout enough to be either so it just came down to sticking a shield on or not. Then I had an idea. MAGNETS! I had the 3mm tablet magnet lying around, so I drilled out the right forearm, stuck one in and greenstuffed over it. They're quite powerful so they hold really well through a couple of mm of filler. One was put onto the back of the shield (making sure the polarity was right) et voila! Removable shield. O.k. I hope you all like it. As always, vote and comment are greatly appreciated. Cheers, Dom

The shield is a great idea - I may steal it. My question is wear though. Won't constantly adding and removing the shield wear a spot through the paint over his arm?

Brilliant idea with the magnet! And as a side benefit, it allows us a better view of the shield side of the model when you take it off. The blues look great, as do the golds, and I really like how his beard came out. Great job on the ruddy nose. The red is solid, but not my favourite part (I know red is hard to photograph, though.)

8+ Two area that I think could to with some adjustment are the Tunic/Hem and the helmet wings. The wings just don't match the quality of the rest of the figure. The tunic seems to be highlighted as just an area and not quite ar material, ditto the hem. Otherwise it's a great piece with an excellent beard.
