Therapeutic, but not stress relieving. Looking at the pic this morning just upsets me even more.

Maybe I need to go blow up more melons with TNT. It's how I spent most of my Sunday afternoon free time.

Well, virtual melons. Got frustrated with an adventure map made of them and went a little aggressive on it.

I have stripped the bear, primed him, and got another coat of base on him. I keep thinking, "I'll post a pic tonight, but after I get the brown wash done". Unfortunately, guess what I haven't had time for? Eh. I'll get to it. Just as soon as toilets stop leaking, the shopping is done, and the bills are paid. Damn real life. Why can't it just go hide for a week or two?

<Warning: Sprinkler System Rant Incoming; skip down to see mini related news>

I have the Sprinkler System From HELL. Spent 5, FIVE, hours on my Friday off from work working on it. There was a break in the line before, and the sprinklers weren't at the pressure they should have been at. So, I dug that back up. And it's leaking a little. Strange. Turn the water on, and not two feet from that I can hear... like a spewing. So I spend TWO hours digging that section out. Tree roots mostly. Get those cut away and find the problem. TWO trees' roots have grown twisted around the poly pipe, squishing it to probably a centimeter thick, and cracking one side. Spent another two hours with a saw and a chisel and hammer (literally faster than the saw) to cut away the roots enough to get to fix the pipe. Trip shopping to pick up repairs and then another hour to fix it. So my day that I'd planned to paint minis and models with the kits went straight into the toilet. Which was leaking from a new spot. I'll pass on that rant.

<Ranting Over>

Finally found some few moments to snap a pic of the bear back to where I was before. The others side of him... has issues. The wash ran under and down the gap between his legs and midsection, so I'll have to paint that back, and possible rewash it. Then I'm going to reapply the highlights that I'd started before, but this time going carefully and deliberately. I may have to put a thin wash over that when I'm done, but at least it'll look better.

And confession time. I'm bidding on eBay. I hate myself for it, but I've got a thing for spaceships. And Tau. And it's a huge lot of Tau ships. Wife is plotting her revenge on what she gets to buy should I win. I need to delete that automated search. It'll send me in the wrong direction eventually. I keep bidding on Tau starter kits, too. I've got TWO. I don't need THREE. And they don't look like they sell well on eBay, so no point in trying to make a buck there.

Okay, picture time.

Couldn't stand it, had to at least a little painting. Got the highlights started on one side. Not sure I want to try to push them lighter, as they're pretty contrast-ty right now. Still.

Actually, looking at the picture I'll post, yes, I need to go one step more lighter.

Birthday party kids are gone, cleanup is on hold for a bit, so I managed to get some painting done. I think I went too heavy on the highlights, especially on the nose in the first picture. And overall, just too much contrast. I dunno. Still a bit sleepy. I am happy with the eyes, although I wish that I'd been able to do them both in the same way. Just didn't seem to go that way. If I could, I'd get the first picture's eye on the 2nd pictures side. I think the 2nd side is the "good side". The brush strokes just seemed to come easier on one side rather than the other. As I'm right handed, that would be brushing away from me, while the first picture shows what I get when I'm brushing towards me.

Oh, should do a paint update. Believe the last color I mentioned was the Amber Gold (9032). Went higher on the 2nd with Golden Blond (9033), then even more with Fair Highlight (9048). That last color I used to fill in some of the other areas with very small brush strokes (still amazed how thin I was able to get some of the lines), and if I were to redo everything, I'd probably try to make a bunch of thin lines as the highlight rather than the more, traditional for lack of a better word, highlighting. I think it would lend to a more natural and furry effect. And be horribly time consuming.

I also did the nose and some claws, but every so slightly, with a mix of Brick Red (9001) and Muddy Brown (9028). I didn't want it to be just pure black, or pure brown, but I don't think that the color shows up. The lack of it would, just because of the stark difference. Still. Hmm.

In other news, I finally got a part designed for this little vacation travel box that I'm wanting to build. A six inch by four inch aluminum plate came back as a machined cost of $250. Ouch. Looks like I will probably be investing in a dovetail jig and be going to wood. I'll have to wait until I've got my mini metal shop saved up for before I go over to metal. Oh well. I'll call the wood ones the "fantasy" series and the metal ones the "sci-fi" series. If I ever get around to doing it at all, however. Might just make the one and call it good.

Oh, back to painting. I'm trying to think about what to do for the base. It really doesn't have anything, and I'm not inclined to invest a huge amount of time in it. But, just some flock or just painting it seems wrong. I still may do it justice by trying to paint it like granite, and put some small grass spots and a pine sapling in there. But suggestions welcome. I'm getting tired of this one, so would be happy to call it done soon.

Little bored waiting for Curiosity to land, so got a base coat done on the lion. Had thought about trying to start Juno's new mold, or maybe start prepping some Star Trek ships, but the tired has come. It weighs me done. And a little girl with two cups of pachinko balls pouring them from cup to cup doesn't help my nerves. So here's the start of the lion (Amber Gold, 9032).

These flats must have good definition as there appears to be good shading with just the basecoat under you lighting. Waiting to see how these finish up.

You're right. There is good definition. Which I was totally able to destroy. *sigh* Wasn't the only thing I was able to destroy this week. Little mute button on my old iPhone broke, the one we'd given to our daughter. So, she brings it to Mr. Daddy-Fix-It, who promptly did fix it. Boy, did I fix it. It was usable up until I got my hands on it and opened it up. That's all she wrote.

This ties in to the shading I've done. It's like I've never painted before, you know? I screwed this lion so badly. I like the thin lines that I've managed in spots, generally under the muscle bumps (left picture, but 2nd side), but the others... that will need to be redone. I might save it by doing a thin coat of the base over it again.

No, no. It's done. Just like the phone. Time to start over. Only saving grace is that the mane is good. Hmm.... hopefully, I can overcoat the dark areas and keep the mane... GAH! Too many things to think about. I'm going to bed.

The lion is in the dip. <Cue Jessica Rabbit freak-out> I'll get it primed and back to where it was sometime this weekend. Unfortunately, we'll be doing a basement redo, which is where my painting table resides. May have to pack everything up for a weekend while the paint dries and the new floor goes in. Oh joy. Plus, I'm bidding on some Tau spacecraft. I'm torn. Love to have 'em, but they's expensive fer sure.

EDIT: Didn't win. Sad, but not sad. *sigh*

Quick little update on why no update. WIP shots however. Just not minis.

Wife finally convinced me to start stripping the basement and make it at least livable. Got a cat problem. They're getting up in age, and went through a super stressful episode when we were fostering some other cats, and decided to ruin the nice early 80's carpet. Quite a stench. And this is just the half of the basement that doesn't have all my stuff in it. The basement is more than twice this size, and is a nice set up. Problem is that we'll be taking all of it apart once the wood floor (not shown yet) makes its way over to my end. We're painting the black paneling white so it's making things much brighter down here. Plans are for a nice flat screen, some good cabinets and bookcases, and quite possibly a complete new computer desk setup for me. She hates that my el' cheapo K-Mart special computer desk hasn't fallen apart after sixteen plus years. I actually hate to lose it, as it's starting to wear nicely. Mechanical decay fascinates me at times, and I'd like to push this $30 investment until photon decay of the universe if I can.

But hey, Happy Wife = Happy Life. So it may go.

Speaking of wife, I'll probably have to set aside the bear and lion, except for some diversion-like painting. Anniversary is less than a month away, and I've got some panda figure I need to paint for her. Favorite animal and all. Luckily, she doesn't read the forums, so I'm safe to discuss it. But, with the whole painting setup looking to be torn down and out of service, plus the amount of time she's spending helping in the basement, this is going to be a trick to pull off. Might have to start doing it in the middle of the night or when I wake up early. Honestly not looking forward to my own plans. Sucks to be grownup.

My poor painting table! She is gone!

basement.jpg

Just need to finish up the bottom trim. But, it looks like the desk will be going back in just the same it was before for the time being (see the picture on the first page; the two pics are nearly the same angle to the wall). Been looking around (and given the green light) to get a better painting desk setup. Really think what I want would be either a printer's table or architect's table. Large surfaces with lots of small drawers. Unfortunately, I haven't found what I'm looking for (queue U2), at least anything I could just buy. Searching for "printer's desk" comes up with lots of computer printer tables, which is not the target.

However, I did find some cool plans online, and I've been meaning to do a bit more woodworking. So, what I'm thinking about is taking this printmaker's desk plan and replacing one end with the end from this plan, although I'll probably make a lot more drawers than what is shown. The drawer fronts are faked, and two "fronts" per real drawer. But figure that's an easy change. Then I'll probably try to adapt this jewelry storage into a tall organizer on top of the desk, either on one end or both. Then in the middle, I'm thinking I'll put this printmaker's bookcase, but scale it down to fit miniatures instead of books. I guess it would really be a type tray, and I could probably find some plans. Still, that plan might be good to put some bookcases along the side wall. I might replace it with this open bookcase, and maybe make one of these end tables, redesigned to match the painting desk. If I feel motivated enough, I might take that first plan and make a computer desk to match. Means I'll give up the old desk, so I'm conflicted.

That'll all take time, and as The Wife has pointed out, I don't exactly have time to paint much less make furniture. It's still a goal however, and who knows, I might find some better plans out there yet. Which reminds me! I was going to look through my old books. I've got a couple of ancient woodworking books that might have some cool stuff.

But, I should be back to painting form within the week, all ready and raring to go and bore you all with half-assed paint jobs and hacked together bases!

---boy it is frustrating when you have a nice long reply typed up...and accidently delete it---

I have hung print trays on the wall for mini display, but they would only really fit 25mm human types. They are currently on the parents wall holding commerative stamps.

I would think you could pick upsome blue print drawers at an older used office furniture store. Then youcould stack them and put your tabletop across them. I really like the end tables. Lowe's used to have something similar in unassembled unfinished pine-- unless you are like me where the construction of the woodwork is the fun part and the sanding/ painting is dreaded.

Now make the wife happy :)

Trim and furniture are now back in place. Also added some decorative shelves so the aircraft and spacecraft models can be pulled out of the display cabinet to make room for more minis! Yay! Just now doing the sorting of everything that is going back into the cabinet. Turned eight containers (Atomic Fireball to be exact) into just four containers of plastic bits. Not even really mini stuff, just little bits and bobs that I thought would look interesting in a diorama. At some unknown point in time. Lots of it went in the trash. Hate to throw away some of that, but some of it I've been saving since I started painting, and six years is a long time to be hoarding trash.

But slowly, I'm seeing the painting table surface once again. Hope to have something this weekend.

*Anniversary Alert* *Anniversary Alert*

I now have everything back in place, but only three days until the anniversary. Luckily, I've made a little progress. Okay, nearly none. BUT! I've got the panda mounted to the painting cup, along with the hat and blanket roll (oh thank you mold maker! Just three small things to paint and nothing to assembly). Below is the picture that I did yesterday showing the arrangement I'm planning. Simple. Panda resting by a stream. Some paint, flock, and water effects and its done. Only one small problem.

I DON'T HAVE A BASE. The one shown is for a different project, and I don't want to use it. So... scrounging around the house, and I don't have anything appropriate. Well, I did before I threw everything in the trash over the weekend. *sigh* I might have had something. Not a guarantee. And I could make a silicone mold, but that would take 24 hours. I'm pressed for time. Two hours and a plaster mold later, and I'm read for a quick resin pour. The plaster mold will probably not survive the pour, especially this soon, but I'm short of time. So here goes.

Oh, and I'll throw up a panoramic of the new basement just as soon as I have time.

Yup. Mold didn't survive. The two sort of fused together; resin and plaster. Probably could have done something there, but I've got a usable base for now, so I'm good. It's a bit spongy, probably from the resin and speed at which I did things, but I was planning to cover it entirely anyway. It'll actually grip better now, so I'm okay with things.

Dentist appointments and curriculum night conspired against me on any progress. However, I don't need sleep, right? So managed to get some stuff done.

First, the base coat on the fur (Linen White, 9061).

SadPanda003.jpg

Then a very bad base coat on the bed roll (Olive Shadow, 9157). The paint was a bit dry and I don't think it got mixed enough. I'll do another coat in the morning perhaps before moving on to the lighter colors here.

Bear with me on the pictures. The forum doesn't seem to want to put them in. I'm repeatedly editing this post, logging out, logging in, going advanced, cancelling, and everything else I can think of. The "Cancel" button works every time, but not the "OK". Ooo. Maybe by going to the code itself.

SadPanda004.jpg

Okay, that's working. Anybody else had this problem before? Moving on. Did the base coat on the hat (Chestnut Gold, 9073).

SadPanda005.jpg

And finally, got the base all miliput'd up. The front section will be the small brook. I'm hoping I can find some small smooth rocks to place in the water effects at various places. But not sure I can find anything that would look in-scale and right in enough time. I suppose I could run the son's rock tumbler on a handful of small stones, but I think they'd wear away before they got smooth. The other idea I had was to take small balls of miliput and just smoosh them flat, but not entirely into the stream bed. Not sure I have time for that. Maybe just a nice sandy streambed. Painted and done. Eh...

And with a hundred points I get to buy some minis! Yay! Uh, oh. Nevermind. I think I need to pass. Maybe at 150 pts.

The plan is to almost dry brush these things. Not really dry brushing, but using the side of the brush to get just the tops of things done. And now that I think about that, that's not really going to work on the fur. I was planning to do a bluish-white wash there. Should have done that color first, then edged with the Linen White. It's too late for my brain to be thinking, so it hurts.

Got a bit more done, although I had to hide things a couple times when I heard her coming down the stairs.First, gave the base a quick paint job. Desert Sand (9156) for the sand (go fig) and Pale Green (9012) for the grassy area. I did put a second coat of green on, so it does look better than in the picture. The green will be completely covered in flock, so complete coverage not necessary. Gave it a good coat of matte as well since tomorrow's schedule is to put the water effects in.

SadPanda007.jpg

Next, did the bed roll more on it's base color, Olive Shadow (9157). Paint is still thick and I had to do some surgery on the bottle. Got it back a bit, and will do the mid-tone in the morning. And did get to the mid-tone on the hat, Palomino Gold (9074).

SadPanda008.jpg
SadPanda010.jpg

On to the main figure. Gave it a wash of Ghost White (9063) then base coated the bamboo pole in Olive Green (9035).

I was expecting her to be out of the house this morning, but no luck. Had to hide things just once however. Thank you YouTube for providing cover! I'm going to go by section of the mini, but I painted one thing then went to the other. Oh, and I poured a bit of Realistic Water (not Water Effects). That was the plan all along, I just failed to note it.

Let's star with the bed roll. Got a better base coat on, then went to the mids with Olive Drab (9158) and then highlight with Worn Olive (9159). I was unhappy with the base coat, unhappy with the midtone, and then satisfied with the highlight. It seemed to come together well. Also did the leather straps with Ruddy Leather (9109), Oiled Leather (9110), and then Burnt Orange (9111). Still floored by the fact that brown==dark orange. Never had thought about that until several years ago. Still surprises me that I was oblivious to that.

SadPanda011a.jpg

SadPanda015a.jpg

SadPanda019a.jpg

Next up was the hat, which honestly was nearly done last night. Just went over the top edges with Buckskin Pale (9075).

SadPanda012a.jpg

So on to the main attraction! The panda itself. Now, her being a panda lover, I had to get the markings correct. I believe her biggest issue with people who make panda toys is that they make the tails black. No black tailed pandas! Luckily, this one doesn't have a tail, so I can't screw that up!

The fur is simple Pure Black (9037). The white underneath really showed through, and then the black flowed into the crevices. It was a nice effect, but a little too light on the black. So did two coats at least, possibly more. Then the bag was done up just like the bed roll, Ruddy Leather (9109), Oiled Leather (9110), and Burnt Orange (9111). The bamboo stick was then given some highlight features of Faded Khaki (9129), mostly just the ends and the joints. I like the streaking in the green so kept that as-is (as-was?). Then it's not shown, but the buckle was done in Antique Gold (9050).
