Pegazus's Pile of Pminiatures (WIP)

Did a lot more on the vines, but there's not really anything that one could tell from the picture. So, went ahead and based the handle as well just to have something to show. Chestnut Brown 9071. Found a ton of vines that I missed last night, and in the process, dabbed paint here and there on the pumpkins. Painted over the green spots to get them back up to snuff.

Picture picture.

Realized at lunch today that my plan of making a bunch of Reaper Kickstarter "how to paint" articles is going to be easier than I thought. If I stick to the Starter set of paint, I've got all the colors but one. And I think I can fake Yellowed Bone 9143. Sub a light tan or such color. That's made me a little excited to start in on them. Don't want to give up on Elise and Rotpatch. I do still have 9 days left to finish them for Halloween.

Sorry. Just wanted to share.

Edit: Oh! It just occurred to me that in addition, by limiting things to the twelve colors, I can probably paint assembly line style! Well, unless I start mixing. Maybe do a basic paint using color straight from the bottle, then move to mixes.

you gonna have this finished for halloween?

That is the plan. We'll see what reality brings. Got some time during MNF to do some shading to get it up to Elise's level, and that I hope to get Elise herself reworked a bit to make the blend smoother. Then I've got this Friday off, and so far there are no domestic plans. But those get decided very late in the week.

Moving on, however...

So... what did we learn today, boys & girls? We learned that Pegazus has no idea what he's got hobby wise! He was certain that his Reaper paints stopped at around 140-ish. No! They go much higher, and include that Yellowed Bone! It looks like the starter kit is well in hand.

I should make a little tag or something that lists every single thing I've got for this hobby. Put them all up on a wall and take a picture. Then make that my credit card image on the front. That way every time I whip it out to buy more, I'll be reminded of just how much stuff I actually have and maybe forgo a purchase or three. So glad I didn't head off to the local shop to get another bottle.

Didn't get around to doing any work last night, but did manage to get it done tonight. Put 15 layers of thin paint on the pumpkins, and while I like how a lot of them look, some of them look like they've just been hit with a wash. Figure it would have worked much better had the surfaces been smooth. The grooves and ridges seemed to grab the paint and that's probably the reason that looks strange to me.

Worked it up with a light tan first, and was very disappointed in it so didn't bother to do but one layer with it. So went with a darker color, Muddy Brown 9028. Now when I come back over things with highlight, I'm thinking it'll make things look better as well.

Kids are in bed, so time to paint. I've sort of settled on that time to do things. Watch (okay, listen) to YouTube vids while I'm painting. Mostly gaming videos where I don't have to watch continuously. But! I'm super stoked about showing the progress! Well, until I actually took the pictures. The pictures make things look quite harsh, and the effect is much more subtle. Think I can get that fixed when I take the gallery picture.

Let's begin. Started out doing some highlights on the vines. Luminous Green 9147. Not sure I've ever used that color before, so I had to rehab the bottle a bit. And so got that put in.

Rotpatch_007.jpg

It had a lot of lighter areas to start with, so I didn't fret too much about doing it perfect. On to the pumpkin highlighting. This is what I was most excited about. Used Marigold Yellow 9007, and while the pumpkins around the bottom don't look quite right in the picture, they do look better in hand. But look at the big pumpkin in the middle! The body pumpkin!

Rotpatch_008.jpg

Oh that is pretty. That's what I think they all need to look like. Not going to happen, but that's the goal. The head is nearly as nice, but you can't see it as well in the picture.

With a new boost of confidence, I moved on to Elise. She's supposed to be going at the same time, and I've just now caught up with Rotpatch that I can paint both at the same time. Did the same shade from last time (Muddy Brown 9028) and then the Marigold Yellow again. While the image isn't nearly as dramatic, it's looking like I want it to look.

What I'll still need to do on her is to get the purples more blending. I'm thinking I can probably go over it with the base coat but using it like a shading color. That should give what I'm trying to get. As for Rotpatch, I noticed that his head stem needs to be painted. I'll probably get that when I go to get the handle painted again. For his innards, I'm going to go with a standard pumpkin like white/cream. I did have a thought to putting a little dab of red right in the center, then doing an OSL effect coming out of his split spot on the body. Same for the eyes. Like some enchanted jewel is powering the golem. I thought maybe blue or green, but figure blue would be too jarring and green would blend in with the vines. Yellow wouldn't really show, orange would blend, and purple would be just very weird. Plain as it might be, red seems to be the way to go there.

The pumpkins are looking good, especially the body and head. You may want similar shading on the rest, but I think the ones at the base look better darker than the rest as you have them.

I think you're right on the pumpkins. I was going for the same effect on all of them but only managed it on the top ones. However, your suggestion of keeping them planted an idea in my head. I'm NOT going to do the glowing red. If I go with glowing yellow instead, and really push it all the way to white at the eyes and split, the entire mini will have an OSL like effect, and it'll make a lot more sense to my eyes that the bottom pumpkins are that much darker.

Yeah... that was the plan all along. Yeah. Thanks!

Doing more than just this update, but its halftime and figured I'd get up what I've got now. Put a shade of Amethyst Purple 9024 over all of Elise's clothing, and it made things work quite a bit better. Then went and added a shade darker purple with Nightshade Purple 9022. Showing two pictures to get the full effect of what I've done, although its pretty out of focus on the second hat picture. Shame, because that's what I was really interested in showing. Still works, and I'm too lazy to take another. The light from the lamp is in the opposite direction from where its painted on the mini, just to show how much effect this is. Which I'm happy, with, BTW.

Heh. Face is on the other side, and sounds like your hands are very idle since you've finished the Old One. One thing I really, really enjoy about this mini is the hidden naughtiness in it. It's a bit ... much... if I think about it too much. Then again, I'm a perv.

Got some done on Rotpatch now. Did the innards with Creamy Ivory 9144, then given a wash of Faded Khaki 9129. Looks really nice to me. Then went and started the moldy patches with Stormy Grey 9088.

Yup on the hidden. First time I painted Elise, I gave the pumpkin a nosebleed, ala anime style. But the stalks are pretty finished. It gets washed out in the light and autoleveling. In hand, I don't want it lighter nor darker. I think it would take away from how it currently looks. This will be an issue to deal with on the gallery image.

But now, I'm out of time to put up pictures of what I've got. Kids are itching to cut up some real pumpkins, so I'm off to slaughter a couple of gourds.

Its never easy to tell unless the mini's sitting in front of you but i would do some dark green possibly brown or black washes to define the different tendrils and stalks from each other.....what am i talking about im not a painter... this isnt my locker...LOl

Yeah, yeah. I stopped being lazy and did the wash. I really fought myself to just sit down and do it. Which is stupid, since a wash is one of the most simple techniques to do. Very strange.

Anyway, first up is the pre-wash picture. Did quite a bit between pictures. Touched the tops of the moldy patches with Misty Grey 9090. Started the blade off with a base of Shadowed Steel 9052 then went over with Rust Brown 9072. For the handle I tried doing a shade of Mahogany Brown 9070, but it was so dark to start with it really didn't make any difference. I think the Reaper triads are probably two close to each other in color now. Just have to push the contrast so much it seems, and they don't really have the range. Still love 'em, mind you, but I find I'm having to pick the shade and highlights from other locations.

Carrying on, I then did a highlight in Rust Brown on the handle. That worked a little better.

Rotpatch_012.jpg

Then I went on and did the wash. Used Jungle Moss 9082.

Rotpatch_013.jpg

I'm not sure that it looks better. But it doesn't look any worse. Might just have to do some more later, but dunno. Think I'm done.

Sadly, it appears I won't manage to finish Elise before Halloween, but I did manage to complete Rotpatch tonight. Wasn't planning to, but that's my life right now.

First off, started on the base with Worn Olive 9159. This isn't the greatest picture of it, because I had already started the next step, so had to get the unwashed side.

Rotpatch_014.jpg

Then topped it off with a wash of Jungle Moss 9082. Realized I don't think I'd posted a picture from the back, so here's that as well. And um, yeah. Thought I took the picture when the wash was dry. Guess not.

Don't think I'll manage to do anything on Elise, so she'll probably go back into the cabinet for a while. Next up will be the Reaper Kickstarter tutorials for putting up here in the articles. First one looks to be the Orc Spearmen, and RKT #1 will be straightening the plastic. RKT #2 will be seeing a simple paint job on a bare bones Bones (ha!), a black primer figure, and then a grey primer figure. Decided that there wasn't going to be a compelling reason to do the white, but I may have said that already. Only problem is time this week. Between craft shows and Cub Scouts, I don't think I'll have a spare three hours in a row for the rest of the week. Joys of married with kids.

Sticks hand down pants front. "Woah Bundy!"

Ah well, that's what vacation camps are for. "Sure kids, go be free under supervision! Adventure!"

Sadly, no vacation camps coming up any time soon. Boy Scouts are on the horizon, so maybe I'll get some time off from half the brood then. But in any case, had the craft store meeting cancel, so that'll be filled with building rockets.

While waiting for trick or treaters, I took the gallery pictures for Rotpatch, having matte coated him last night. And he's up! You can check him out here: Rotpatch!

That's about it for tonight. Not going to even open up the package for the orcs until I can get some time. Carry on!
