I wonder if the thought of a panda and olive green just go too well together? Never see a panda with red, but the green bamboo. Maybe a psychiatrist will chime in.

Well, mission accomplished. Sort of. She's happy with it, but I'm very disappointed with the base. So gift has been given, and appreciation of it has been done. But I will be making a new base for it. This morning taking off the tape holding back the water effects, I found it had poured underneath the base... and hadn't cured. I scraped that all off with a knife, and got the base dried off enough. Flocked it and was very disappointed there. So, I don't care for the open sided water thing. And the plainness of the stuff under the water was, well, plain. Bland.

So, round two of the base once I manage to acquire a nicer one, will be to make the little pebbled stream that I really wanted to do. And it will be a small stream and not a large one. With a small stream I'll be able to better close the ends of the place where the Realistic Water will be poured as it'll have a stream bank on each side. The pebbles will also give something for the eye to look at rather than "sand".

Anyway, pictures. I'm going to hold off putting this in the gallery until I've got the base that I want. Then I'll do the really nice photos.

Shocking news! I had time to paint tonight! I'd run out of things to do, and so started back on the lion. First, the base coat. Same as last time, base is Amber Gold (9032).

Lion_006_zps09fbde5c.jpg

Then went with shading. I think, no; I know I'm doing better on that this time around. I see from the first picture below that I should probably rework the back leg's shading, and possibly both legs. But, luckily, it's not something I'd have to strip the mini to do. Yay!

But it looks like I didn't paint the mane. Which I meant to do. Damn YouTube distractions!

Still need to place an order yet for the daughter's mouslings from Reaper. She's been pestering lately. Then again, she's been getting a 30 min bedtime penalty too, so not rushing to fulfill her every whim right now.

Got a bit done today, and I'm happy with the results. Not perfect, but better than what I've managed lately.

First up, got a bit of a base on the bear done. Did Stone Grey (9086) and looks well enough. I'll put a bit of flock for a moss look, then some clumps of grass and call it done.

Bear_008_zps5185c73b.jpg

Then I started on the lion's mane. Forgot to do it last time, so went straight into it with Shield Brown (9161) as a base.

Lion_009_zps9a2b90b5.jpg

Next was a highlight of Driftwood Brown (9162) and then Amber Gold (9032).

I need to next paint the eyes on him, and base it as well, and then it will be called done.

Now, I've been out building quite a bit. Nothing mini related, unless you frequent the Freak Bar and know things. And since I had the hole cutters out and available, I decided to cut out two disks from some leftover and useless wood floor from the basement remodel. The one on the left has simply been cleaned up while the one on the right I've done a chamfer like thing on the edge. Not sure which I like better. This will be for rebasing the panda that was a gift to my wife. It's a 3" disk I think. I'll have to scuff up the surface and fill in the hole, but should be fairly straight forward. And with more space to work with, I can get closer to the concept that was in my head.

And in the fine forum tradition of showing all the stupid things one does, here's the result of drilling through the wood without really thinking about what was on the other side.

DrillDamage_zpsccdc27e3.jpg

Ouch. And what's bad is that those aren't "cuts" per se. Just very deep scrapes. Which like to ooze rather than scab. I hate those types of injuries very much.

After yesterday's full day of craft show attending in literally freezing weather (rain, snow, and a pesky breeze), managed to get some painting done this afternoon. It's going to be a long post, so sit back and get a drink handy.

First off, since I was upstairs under the kotatsu (Japanese heated table), all I could really do was paint rather than basing. So the bear has yet to be based, but I did manage to more or less finish the lion. Did the grass tufts in Palomino Gold (9074) and the rest of the base in Chestnut Gold (9073). I plan on doing a lot of wispy dry grasses around in clumps on the base, and possibly some yellow flock patches, so those colors work well I believe. Then, did the eye in Shield Brown (9161), and went around the mouth in the same color as well as the nose. This is to the point where I'm done with it. I could do better, and strip it and start over again, but it's time to move on.

Lion_012.jpg

Next up, I started working on Elise the Witch from Reaper. I'd had it started before, but just the two base coats. Doesn't look like I every posted a picture of it, and that's probably because I started it before I started the thread. Now I was going to put up a picture of where I started, with just the base of 2 parts Fair Skin (9047) to 1 part Pale Olive (9036) for the skin and then for the clothing a base of Amethyst Purple (9024). Unfortunately, the picture turned out overexposed and what you can see is white. So not worth posting.

But I did get a picture just after I started the highlights on the skin. Used 1 part Pale Olive (9036) and 2 parts Fair Highlight (9048). And didn't like the resulting color after I'd done a layer. So, added in 1 part Sunlight Yellow (9008) and got a much better result.

Then managed to get a crappy picture again! Must be terrible lighting in the living room. Sheesh! Here I was all excited to show the progress and I can't. Losing points here with bad pictures!

Elise_002.jpg

Next I went with highlighting the clothing, using 1 part Amethyst Purple (9024) and 1 part Pure White (9039). From the picture below, it looks like I need to reblend up from the purple on that forward leg. Just too start a contrast between the two.

Elise_005.jpg

I then went to work on the pumpkin, with a base of Fire Orange (9006). At this point, my phone was out of battery so I stopped taking pictures in between colors. Highlights on the gourd were done with Marigold Yellow (9007). The eyes on the pumpkin were done with Sunlight Yellow (9008) and as long as I had it on the pallet, I used it for her eyes as well. I then did her iris with the Fire Orange as well. I think. Now I can't remember. It doesn't look that great in person, but I do like the effect in the picture although it's harder to see.

Elise_006.jpg

Not a bad days worth of painting. I may try to do more tomorrow during Monday's game, but I may decide to just vegetate.

EDIT: Two things I wanted to write, but forgot: 1) I've painted Elise before, in pretty much the same colors. I wanted to do it again to compare the two in order to see if I've improved at all. I'm sadly thinking not, as it is turning out about the same. Probably not enough painting. 2) That pumpkin! Dear me! I probably put 20-30 layers of basecoat on it. That orange just did NOT want to cover at all. It possibly is the old horrible-yellow-coverage problem, but had I not had something to distract me from how many times I'd gone over the same spot, I would have gone straight from the bottle to the brush.

The lion turned out pretty good. I agree with Elise, you need some blending. It looks like you are on the right track if you follow Milosh's method used on the bondage girl wip. ...and i think the pumpkin turned out good, just need more contrast for the photo on it.

I'll have to read up on that method. Memory's terrible.

Oh wait.

Anyway, just wanted to post up a quick quip. Started cleaning up another Reaper mini, Rotpatch the Pumpkin Golem since I'm painting pumpkins anyway and it fits in with Elise rather nicely. Not sure witches raise up golems, but hey, it could happen. I hear Wiccan Pony raises lots of totems over in the Freak Bar.

Oh, wait.

Anyway, wanted to post up that while cleaning the seam off of the head of the scythe, it occurred to me that there was something ironic about taking that off when if you buy one in real life, it'll have a huge seam on it and thus would be more realistic to leave it. I'd get dinged for it, but it'd be a detail.

Completely unrelated, but remember seeing a 1960's Corvette getting the once over on TV from a restoration appraiser. And he mentioned that the paint job was done correctly during the restoration, and that it wasn't 100% coverage. While the car was rolling down the line, they'd paint what they could see and under the rear end was sheet metal that'd be missed by the painters. So it was more authentic to have a paint job that was incomplete.

Where is the all going you ask?

I'll have to check out that WIP you mentioned. Memory's terrible.

EDIT: Might as well post a picture of Rotpatch all cleaned up.

Yeah, every time I go into the hobby store "to look", it rarely seems to be that. Always come home with a new treasure. Is that hoarding or addiction? Or is hoarding just a facet of addiction? But does it matter either way, as long as I can keep buying minis?

Although, just purchased a new molding set, so that will remove more pocket change. Trying a Hirst Arts recommended RTV this time. Wonder what wifey will say? Bit of a unplanned purchase this morning.

Got Rotpatch primed, so he's ready for the next round with Elise. Can really see the details better now.

Rotpatch_002.jpg

I'm also cleaning up a set of 5 Tau Defender space ships from Battlefleet Gothic. Little disappointed at the eBay purchase. They were mounted directly from the box it seems, and the stands have broken off. Leaving a nice little plastic nub in the hole where the stand is supposed to go. Can either clean that all out and reshape the stand, or I can just try gluing them back together. Not sure which way I'll go yet.

Wasn't going to do anything tonight, but wound up spending nearly an hour on 'em. Did just a tad bit of basing to the lion and bear. Since they're both flats, I didn't want to make an overly ornate base, but it needed just a little detail to break up the plainness of it. And I'm quite happy with the result.

The effect I wanted for the bear came across rather well, which was little clumps of mossy like plants and some small grass that might be growing in some cracks in the slate. The mossy clumps are some green and yellow flock that I'd mixed together with each other in a plastic ziploc bag, and the grass is simply static grass.

Bear_009.jpg
Bear_010.jpg

Then for the lion, I went quite a bit more bare. For it, just a mix of one part tan tall grass with some light green grass. It doesn't show up very well with the WIP shot, but I liked the effect that the two have. That's a trick from How It's Made, an episode where they were making wigs for stage production. They mixed some blonde with brown hairs, and then threw a loop in by putting hot pink in as well. The end result was more... dynamic for lack of a better word, so I've been using that insight when I can.

I also put the grass clumps on a single side, with some yellow flock around the base to cover the glue a bit. Like the 3D effect it helps give as well.

Overall, I'm happy with how these two came out, and will happily add them to the gallery soon. Pretty sure I want to do them individually, rather than as a bear. GAH! Tired and sleepy. A pair, not a bear. Sheesh!

Great work so far :D
Voted too, for what it's worth.
Thanks, and a vote is worth exactly one vote. See? I smart! Seriously, tho, it is appreciated!

Today I think a trip to the hobby store is in order. I was going to go tomorrow, during a trip over to the same area for a birthday party. But, I've got plenty of time today until Cub Scouts in the afternoon. And tomorrow is a camp out in the evening, so rather than rush it all tomorrow I'll do the fun stuff today. Oh, day off, too, so no pesky interruptions like real work.

Anyway, the plan I've got is to pick up one or two (or three, or four, or N+1) Reaper minis that are currently in metal but will be produced in the Bones line from their Kickstarter. Want to make an article or two to welcome the noobs into the fold when those start showing up at peoples doors in March next year. Ah! Reminder to self: check to see that I don't already have one of 'em. Good point, good point. So, I've got a list of 16 chosen. You know what? I'm going to go ahead and list/link them so we can all play along! That, and I can prioritize which ones I'd rather have. Course, by the time anybody comments, I'll have the purchase in my hands, so this really isn't going to be very interactive!

I've got them separated by category as well. And it seems that most of the people, at least on Reaper's forums were into the fantasy realms, so I'll try to gear things to that, but with an eye towards price. No reason to go overboard on this.

Category #1: Test Subjects!
First one actually doesn't follow what I just said. It is a set in Bones already, 77010 six Kobolds. Figure this will give me some hands on experience with the material (Bones are a type of PVC plastic, if you weren't aware). Plus, as a pack of six, I can do a show and tell with the primer claims. The Bones line states that they don't need to be primed, but can go directly to painting. Well, that's good and all, but some like to prime black, or grey, or some of us just can't stand NOT priming. In addition, I've heard that some types of primer might eat into the figures. Pack of six = sacrifices can be made!

Category #2: Generic PC (in priority order)
03441 Elliwyn Heatherlark, Gnome Bard (very good as it has chain mail, clothing, etc)
03340 Cassie, Female Gnome wizard
(Good simple DnD character)
02811 Dain Deepaxe (dwarf with an axe; yeah)
03292: Almaran the Gold, Paladin With Flaming Sword (sort of meh, but flames)
03098 Astrid
(a guitar? seriously?)
50274 Sara Blitzer (isn't really very DND oriented)
03071 Hellakin Goregutter, Halfling Thief (not very inspiring)
50267 Deputy Wayne Tisdale (again, not very DnD)

Category #3: NPC/Cannon fodder
02889 Dire Rats (I've actually got these in my drawer! Not the Bones ones, but hey, rats!)
02584 Townsfolk II (just want the strumpet, but I've got a set of three that are slightly different, so could swap)
03616 Tiik Warriors (this would be good with the paint sets that were part of the Kickstarter)
03395 Ghostly Summons (okay, I admit it, this would just be fun)
03480 Aello, Harpy (Not very interesting, but lots of animal parts)
20024 Goblins (prepainted, but I can strip 'em!)
06039 Lizard Men w/Spears (bit pricey)

The other thing I've rolled over in my mind is trying to use just the paints that would come with the Kickstarter. I'm not sure that's necessary, or even will work for most of the new painters. And (luckily for me), I'll not try to paint these to a high standard. Shooting for a solid mid-5 range on all of them.

Anyway, that's it for now. As always, my name is Kurt and I will see you.... wait. Sorry. Too many YouTube videos. I'm not Kurt. We'll see what I actually come home with.

Made it home with my little treasures. Didn't find all that I was going for, but surprised myself at how much I did find.

First, didn't get the Bones figure I wanted. So settled for 77003 Orc Spearmen. Came with three figures, all the same. So, figure I can prime one in black, one in grey, and one in white. Then I'll strip the white one completely and paint it straight on the plastic. Not sure if that'll count as cheating for my purposes. Upside is that I'll have some straightening to do on their spears. They need a bit of Viagra-like work.

For the generic PC, I got my first two picks, 03441 Elliwyn Heatherlark, Gnome Bard and 03340 Cassie, Female Gnome wizard. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any of the male figures, so we're a bit unbalanced. Also got 50274 Sara Blitzer in order to not be 100% fantasy figures. I did find the 03071 Hellakin Goregutter, Halfling Thief, but looking at the figure it was absolutely something I wouldn't enjoy painting. So I'm not getting that torture twice.

And finally, for the NPC-like and mobs, I did pretty well, too. Went with 02584 Townsfolk II simply because I lacked male characters to start with. So I've got a beggar and a blacksmith. Could always do a bit of modification on the beggar. He's holding a bowl, so I could sculpt some quick flames and make him a seer. That might actually be very interesting. Then I got the next two figures on the list, 03616 Tiik Warriors and 03395 Ghostly Summons. I did find 03480 Aello, Harpy but like the halfling thief, it just didn't seem to be of any interest to me.

I was all set to put base coats on Rotpatch, and then remembered I was going to do the formal pictures for the lion and the bear. So, as much as my painting eats at me to continue, I had to do the gallery pictures first. So, here they are!

Link to the Lion
Link to the Bear

I find myself really unmotivated, but that's with everything in general, so I'm fighting through that. When I'm at work, I want to be home painting. When I'm at home, I want to be at work. It's very strange. And then when its the weekend, I really am not up to painting. Got to work through it like I did with the panda.

Which I realize I still want to redo the base on that. Sheesh!

Anyway, got two gallery pictures added, so +20 pts on them, for 151 points total! Means I can buy another mini guilt free! Had I not bought so many in the past three months. At this point, the points are a joke. Especially with that Reaper Kickstarter stuff coming. Then again, that has got me trying to complete 12 minis in November. That'll be interesting. I've done two in three months, and now I'm going to do 12? Better find some motivation somewhere!

Worked on Rotpatch tonight. Only managed the pumpkins, as I had two "assistants" painting with me. Fire Orange (9006) for the pumpkin base.

Oh boy, are there a LOT of little vines on Rotpatch! Grass Green 9014. I spent over an hour on it today, and this is as far further I got:

Interesting note, which I didn't mention to start with, but I switched over from my Raphael 8404's to a Winsor & Neton Series 7 brush. Why? Well... because I've had two of them sitting on my desk for over a year now, so figured it was time to paint with one of them. Only problem? The W&N are size 2 and the Raphael was size 1! Oops! I meant to buy the same size that I had been using. And of course, I've had them over a year now (Groupon from local art store; had to do it), I can't return either of them. But, there's an interesting story here. Oh, those of you who just like the pretty pictures (pretty! Ha!) can skip to the next thread. Or, down the video. More on that later.

So, I've always painted with smaller brushes. And compared to what I've been using, this one is huge. And I didn't like. At first. At second, I'm still iffy. It kept the point fairly well, although I think I've got a bit of a bum brush as it likes to split into two parts. And so I was able to do the little fiddly vines with pretty good brush control, especially with my contact in. Hard to get close when I'm not in my glasses you see. But I really wasn't happy with the size still. Hard to get into certain spots, and just the volume of the bristles made me bristle. I did manage to paint the pumpkins in a couple of spots by accident. However, I was able to paint for a LONG time compared to the smaller brushes. I can see where that will be handy, and it was tonight. Will I continue using this brush? I'm planning to. I may switch back to the smaller ones to do more detail work. Dunno. Just thought I'd post the comment.

And now video time. Not sure how many YouTube addicts there are here, but I watch a lot of gaming videos. Not really games I'd play, but I do enjoy watching a couple of people play them. And so, I'd like to introduce you to Tiny Tina from Borderlands 2:

Quite possibly one of the best insane characters I've seen in a long time. So much fun. And so, I feel I must paint her. Problem I'm having right now is finding an appropriate figure where I can start from. Still. TEA PARTY!
