Bailey03's WIP

Sounds like a real challenge! The face is looking excellent so far. I think you should try for the freckles, they add a lot to the face in Brom's piece.

Thanks! Turns out I had a little bit of time to paint, so I did some more tweaking. Layered on some glazes and gave the freckles a shot. I'm still not happy with the far side of his face. It looks okay from this angle, but when you look at it from the other side it just needs something more. Unfortunately at this point I'm worrying I'll overwork it... so probably best to leave it as is until I get more of the figure down. Maybe that will help me come up with what to do.

The freckles look good if a bit uniform. I would suggest masking the area and flicking some of that freckle color on from a soft toothbrush in a very thin small pattern. I did a test with blood spray in my WIP on Alice for the various spray patterns and I believe that the thinned paint and tooth brush would give you small enough and random patterns - and if the paint is thin enough you can suck up anything that feels too much with a damp brush while it's still wet.

Looks nice, but the distance between the crease under the eye and the crease from the tip of the nose seems wider than the painting. Maybe this is what is causing you fits.

Wow Bailey! Fantastically awesome! He looks great so far but I can see how he's going to be a challenge. You know, you said freckles, I immediately thought more of sun damage/liverspots. lol! Holy cow kiddo I can't wait to see how he turns out.

A challenge indeed, it'll be tricky reproducing every nuance of a painting that no doubt is considerably larger irl. Great start although i think the freckles could be less conspicuous on the mini. Great news on the right hand side is you can position the mini close to the background of the base?? eagerly watching, such a sinister figure.....

He's looking sly. I think the freckles came out great, he's looking very true to the art.

Digganob, check out Brom's work here. He has some stuff you might recognize, Conan and Dark Age and more.

Thanks, everyone. Zab, I'll experiment with flicking paint... although I worry that the specks will be too large for what I want. In the end I might just go back in with the brush and try to get it a little more random looking. Digganob, the link that Sionid posted is a good site to check out. Lots of cool stuff there! Dennis, yeah, the position of the base/wall does help a bit. Although since his head is angled to his left you still get a pretty good view of the other side.

In other news, I just got a shipment of Scale75 paints the other day. I've heard great things about their Metal n'Alchemy sets so I've been really wanting to give them a try. I've only played around a little bit but so far I love them. On the brush they feel very similar to the Vallejo Model Air metals, really fine particles so they flow and blend really well. But I like their color options a lot more than VMA. In addition to a good selection of yellow and grey metals, they've also got some nice subtle red, blue, green, and purple colors.

When they arrived I randomly grabbed the kunzite alchemy bottle (a pinkish purple) and something to test it out on. The section on the left is a single coat (straight out of the bottle) while the one on the right is 3 layers. I'm used to metallic paints that are pretty thick, so it's great to find one where you can really layer and build up color gradually.

Unfortunately there's not much metal on Jack and I'm not ready for the sword, so I picked up my Roman Officer and started on his armor. The helmet is still in the early stages but his chest gives you an idea of the paints. I'm just using three of the metals (Necro Gold, Elven Gold, and Citrine Alchemy) along with some black ink. It's probably not the best example as it's not exploiting the range of colors the sets have but it was prepped and ready for paint! I'll have to find a good fantasy or sci-fi figure where I can really play with these paints.

On a side note to anyone in the US or Canada looking for the Scale75 metals, check with ColoradoMiniatures. They don't have them listed on their site, but you can contact them directly about it. The paint sets aren't cheap, but they've got the best prices I've seen around here.

Sweet! Yeah definitely need to put those suckers through their paces. I remember seeing some nice models from them as well but haven't looked at anything new from them. It will be interesting to see how the paints work out.

Jack's face is looking suitably epic Bailey. Don't worry about the far side! Isn't he up against a wall? Looks like a pretty amazing sculpt too. The detail on the stitches and seams on his hat looks incredible.

scale75 metals look really promising, i'd seen a mini on browse using the colours and tried to track them down, but alas only full sets... money being how it is i'll hold on and await your conclusion. I'm about to experiment with a medium from vmc, apparently i can glaze with just the medium, should be interesting. roman's face is pretty much flawless, too flawless!

The armor is nice and the colored metals look nice. Will definately follow your experiments with the new metallics.

Bailey, you are the Man at TMM bro. Whenever I try to master this, I'll be sure to talk with you. If Scale75 is anything like I've heard with their metallics, then you just got yourself the atom bomb of paints, my friend. BTW, meant to tell you big congrats on the EC at Putty & Paint. I saw u on there and thought, that Lost in the Woods piece is the best of the best!

Thanks, everyone! BFK, I'm happy to share what I've learned. But when it comes to TMM I still bow before Skel. Have you seen his latest post where I start with silver and uses glazes to turn it into gold? Freaking impressive.

And now for something completely different...

A while ago I was asked to put together another SBS. It took me a while but today I finally started working on it. It's covering the painting of a 54mm historical figure, a French Dragoon from Pegaso, from start to finish. I've done a number of Napoleonic figures but this is my first Dragoon. Anyway, here's a sneak peak.

(minor edit - I found that I actually took more pictures, so I broke down the final step into two images so you can see it immediately before and after glazing)

View attachment 29988

1 - Base coat of Rosy Shadow
2 - Rough in the shadows with Chestnut Brown and a bit of Mahogany Brown (mostly so I can get those dark areas down before I start on the eyes)
3 - Layer of reddish pink (Rosy Skin + Violet Red) and then off white (Weathered Stone)
4 - Add in the irises with Ritterlich Blue, then some details (light blue near the bottom for some highlights, black for the pupil, and pure white for a catchlight). On a 54mm all of that is still pretty freaking small, so it takes a steady hand and some luck to hit the right spot. Thankfully it's pretty hard to see with the naked eye so you can always just fake it. =P
5 - Blending the skin shadows, Chestnut Brown into Rosy Shadow
6 - Blending the highlights, Rosy Shadow into Fair Skin, then into Fair Highlight
7 - Details and Tweak
Based on the previous picture I thought the highlights needed more pop, so I went from fair highlight to linen white on the tops of the cheeks, tip of the nose, and a bit on the chin. I used a mix of skin tones and red for the lips, repeated steps 5 and 6 on the ears, and painted in the eye brows.
8 - Glazing
The real magic with glazes. I used GW's Bloodletter, Guilliman Blue, and a mix of the two for purple (all further thinned with water). The red went on the cheeks, top of the nose, and ear lobes. Blue went on the lower part of the face to change the tone for a subtle stubble effect. The purple was used to emphasize the deeper shadows on the cheeks and a little bit around the eyes.

So that's the quick version. I'll be putting in a bit more detail when I sit down and write the full article... plus, you know, the rest of the figure. I'll post some more in progress photos as I go along, but I'll probably save the rest of the SBS details for the article. Sorry!
