bgcdazzler's first ever mini WIP (a confusion of cockups and learnings)

Well, given the awful England/Australia results in the egg-chasing, I thought I might salvage the night with a bit of painting. Here's my base....

Step 1 - primer

Step 2 - basic colours

Step 3 - lightening and defining

So in the next post I should have the little monsters on the base (not glued, though). In about, ooh, two minutes...

All feedback really welcome: I'm still really, really new at this so I'd love some tips on how to make the next ones better...

That turned out really well! :victory:

It's a bit tough to see too many details in the pic. But I'd venture to suggest that you're generally on the right track. More practice with brush control and colours will get you far. Good start imho.

Wow, very effective! I just amaze myself on the skills of some people that is just "new" to this... *looking at you and ArchArad* congrats!!

The only thing is that I find the blue reflections a bit too strong / a bit too expanded, while the orange ones seems nice.
I will post my first minis to my WIP for you to compare and you will probably laught at them xD but I will do, because they were what I begun with and I'm proud of them. xD

You can be much more than proud mate ;)

Thank you all for the nice comments and feedback. Really helpful!

Maenas - I know just what you mean about the blue vs red. I'll try to be more consistent on the next one(s).

Arch, you're right about brush control being the next thing I need to perfect. I think I'm going to have to try a lot more freehand on the next one as well as blending transitions. The only transition I'm happy with on the whole mini is the blue-orange strap, so this needs working on. I know what you mean about the pics too - I was a bit impatient to show the near-finished results. Here are some pics in the (cold) light of day.

(Guess I'll have to add a better camera to my list of things to buy too...)

Glad you like them, Digga. Got to love the Orks - so much more character than those boring space marines.

I had a bit of a lovely treat today. I took the kids for their swimming lessons this morning at Crystal Palace Sports Centre... and lo and behold it was SELWG's annual trade show (SELWG is South East London Wargaming Group, it turns out). Has anyone ever been to this? They filled out a huge amount of the sports centre with trade stands and minis galore, plus lots of tables set up with games going on. The kids were fascinated and kept pointing at stuff saying 'that's like the little men you paint, daddy!' Bless them.

There was an enormous collection of period minis, some bring and buy stalls, the obligatory Games Workshop and Forge World stands... lots of fun to be had. If the kids hadn't've been so hungry I would still be there now. :)

Needless to say I bought a few items. I'll put a few pics up...

Yay shopping! It's so much fun getting new minis. The problem eventually becomes deciding who to paint next!

This hobby seems to be a collector's paradise - when I started I foolishly thought I'd be happy with the two kits I'd bought and that I wouldn't need to get anything more for ages. Silly, silly me.

Yes show us your loot!

Ask, and ye shall receive...

Righto, here we go: a few of the items I got today.

Incidentally this is the trader list from SELWG. The miniatures I got were (mostly) from Brigade Models.

First one: an antler demon. Took me forever to clean up the cape on the back (and, incidentally, my first foray into metal miniatures. I almost feel like a 'proper' hobbyist now...)

Next is a job lot of cute little things that my kids insisted I get: including a cute little witch and a gun-toting guinea pig. No idea why.

Next is a sort of skeleton/ghost/thing holding two sickles. I thought he might be a good one for trying out NMM - not sure how that's going to turn out.

Finally on a bit of a whim I got this one: I'm thinking it might be a mistake because actually the horse is a very average sculpt: there's barely any detail on him and his bit/bridle/rein bits (whatever they're called) are one solid lump beneath his jaw. Ah well, a good practice mini for big areas of painting: he'll be good for practicing smooth basecoats if nothing else.

Your kids have good taste - I especially approve of the Rambo guinea pig! :)

Nice haul and it looks like you've done a good job cleaning them up. Don't forget to give them a quick scrub with some warm soapy water and an old toothbrush before priming - mold release is a b*%#$.

It really is a pity about the last mini because the rider looks like a decent sculpt and cast. Could you paint him standing separately with a bit of modification? I agree that the horse will make a great practice mini for blending etc.

Have you decided on your next project?

Unfortunately the rider has a bit of a wide stance (the horse is too fat, basically) so he won't work as a standalone. It is a shame as he has a nice bit of character – I picked it mainly for him and his twin pigtails and big, plain sword – but ah well. I'll still give it a good go.

In terms of my next project, I might do one of these new ones, or I have the khorgorath, or a couple more orks. I had an idea to do something big and ork-based that I've been putting off as it will involve a bit of sculpting (and I'm not really feeling ready for that yet) plus I like the idea of getting some quicker results than leaping straight into another diorama.

I'm really only marking time until my King Maulg arrives for the paintalong, so I guess I should do something small first.

Hmmm....

Oh, I don't know: but I'm open to suggestions!

Hmmm - maybe you could somehow have the rider straddling a beast he's just killed and he's roaring in triumph?

The little witch might be fun. Your kids would probably enjoy seeing her painted and she doesn't necessarily need a fancy base.

But I'm reluctant to recommend anything because I find it often depends on which one of them is "talking" to you.

I'll just keep an eye out.

First, I applaud the adventures in OSL! Even if it is wasted on those filthy xenos. Second, Digga you ork lovers seem to be breeding like well, orks. I think we need to have a beakies VS orks painting challenge to thin the ranks a bit -_-
