A quick update - really just blocking in some of the other colours on the mini. I was inspired by Tero's lovely juggernaut, so instead of NMM (which I'll save for, um, some other time...) I went with a nice rusty warm mix on the shoulderpads and blade. It's only rough at the mo - there's little skull details on the blade that I'll need to pick out - but it's a start. Also deepened the shadows on the cloak and made the fur a nice dark orangey mix.
Oh, and I wanted to say thank you to all who have visited my little WIP and been so helpful and friendly. It has certainly spurred me on to improve. Over 100 posts now!
To celebrate I drew a little sketch. Maenas had the (dubious) honour of writing post #100. In it he mentions a bit of fear for starting freehand (and we all know what that feels like :moneymouth so in true CMON style I drew someone to offer a little bit of encouragement/mild threat.
Nice sketch! I really like the warm color on the blade and pads. At the moment it is a gorgeous aged bone color to me, but I can see how it will be a nice base for the metal as well. Paint on....
@krule yep, I did the antlers like it first and it worked quite well, so ended up doing all the metal like it (except I added metallics to the metal, of course)
@Arch it's a buildup of lots of different layers really - some black, burnt umber, orange, gold, a tiny bit of purple and silver. Can't remember the order exactly, I just dipped into each and kept going until either I'm happy or the paint's dried out!
Woooooooowwww!! Such an awesome present, thank you a lot for that encouragement ^^
You aren't obviously a noob illustrator.. I can appreciate some very good skills there, either you have a hundreds of drawing hours on your pencils or have a natural talent to it.
Thank you again for that drawing, and Im going to try that freehand thing later today or tomorrow and share with you all the results.
Back to your work, I like the true metallic metal approach and I think it's more appropriate for this mini. I'm looking forward for further advancements on it.
Ha, I think that's everything (and the painting isn't quite there yet, to be honest). No, wait - I can also play guitar. Does that count?
Maenas, glad you like it. Now do as the big fella says: and share the results!
Right, any way - an update. Biggest cockup on this one was that I left (or avoided, if you must know) the flesh until last. I'm reasonably happy with how it's turned out, but my god it was fiddly to get into all the little crevices and nooks.
I'm thinking this is 90% done and nearly ready for a base. But I might leave the chappie on blu-tac while I get on the khorgorath - otherwise Arch is going to be steaming into the lead with her excellent start....

Different view of the gross heads hanging from his belt. I quite like how this shocked little fella turned out:
Bit of a change of direction: my little monster children have lost khorgorath's head! Grr. I'm ordering another, but decided not to paint anything last night. I watched Mr Turner instead and had a little play with some Fimo. It was quite relaxing and fun. Here's where I got to: just blocking in shapes really. I've not done any sculpting before so this is complete guesswork at the moment.
I want to give sculpting a try as well. But too many projects in the limited space my man and I have at the moment is just not a good plan. But we're house hunting, so one day I'll hopefully have a hobby room to go (more) mad in!
Poor Khorgorath. It must be embarrassing for a monster of his calibre to be defeated by tiny human spawn.
For a first start your definately going the right direction. Especially with guess work. Did you have any reference photos you were looking at or was it 100% push clay around till the shape feels right.
@Arch - know what you mean about needing a hobby space, but actually I was surprised: sculpting takes less space than painting. No pots and water and stuff. For this I just curled up on the sofa with a plate on my lap, some modelling clay and tinfoil, and the wrong end of a paintbrush to push the stuff around. A very relaxing way to half-watch TV.
And I'd put money on my kids over a full-size khorgorath any day of the week. They're terrifying.
@BAM - thanks, man.
@digga - Thanks - means a lot from a sculptwizard like yourself. It was all guesswork really, just messing around. It looked distinctly nurgly/shapeless at first, but it is slowly becoming something. Just not sure what yet...
So I see you are taking after me when it comes to sculpting, couch/tv/clay haha That is exactly how I always sculpt. Here is my tip for the day, get a toothpick, my first sculpting tool they work great, I took a pocket of clay and a toothpick on a plane trip once and sculpted the entire flight. As for the guess work, nothing wrong with it, and I still do a lot, but as you continue definitely get some reference materials especially when you get stuck.
Now on to your sculpt. He feels like an ogre to me, so keep it coming bud.
But of an update, just before I smush him... I've worked up his body a bit, quite happy with the arms and torso. I just don't like the head. I was going for an oversized look but now it's on I just don't like it. So I'm going to take his head off and do a smaller one. So for posterity, here's how he looks now.
in other news, my replacement Khorgorath has arrived: so back to the regular end of the paintbrush for me this weekend! Yay!
