bgcdazzler's first ever mini WIP (a confusion of cockups and learnings)

Had a little go at freehand on the antler chap's cape. Okay, it's rubbish: but be gentle, it's my first try...

I'm not the best person to give critique on freehand - as you know I too am a novice.

But you can have my thoughts if you'd like. The design is slightly off centre, fixing that up would help a lot. The shading in the horns is good. I think that maybe you should've done more of your shading and highlighting on the cloak before laying the design down. The writing is nice and clear, but a bit too big.

Hope some of that helps!

Free hand is not bad, but reminds me of my free hand in that it ends up bein too thick if that makes sense. Look at Bailey's wip for tricks on freehand development....he uses dots to create a connect the dot concept for freehand. Also check out Skeletettes wip...i consider him the master of banner freehand.

Thanks Arch, Krule: you're both absolutely right - Arch, I shaded up the cloak lovely (even crosshatching little threads into it) then ruined it trying to neaten up the edges of my freehand. Gah! So difficult. The head is actually centred, but I think the curvature of the cloak makes it look off in this pic. Hmm, maybe it isn't the best canvas for trying freehand after all.

And Krule: Bailey's and Skeletett's WIPs just make me want to eat my paints.

Freehand is cool!! Nice skull and horns. I agree with Arch about the letters, they are a bit too big, and I agree with Krule too paint seems a bit thick too, but hey! Trying is improving ;)
I am sure you have more minis (those last you gathered at that London convention i.e.) to keep experimenting ^^ Keep at it and you will eventually get better and better!
The flatter the surface the easier it becomes to freehand :brushlick:

Just to confirm, the ugly freehanding is now gone:

I went with a green cloak this time - sort of fits the antler theme better - and I'm going to try a more floral/gothic/something design after a few washes of green to smooth the gradient into yellow at the base of the cloak.

And once I've cocked that up, I'll of course post with an update. :)

Aw, sorry Ten. I promise the next one will be better. I'll even try to sneak in a little 10 ball as an easter egg to cheer you up. :)

I agree with ten ball - the freehand was not ugly. Just so you know.

I like the new colours in the cloak. :good:

Gosh, there was more love out there for my rather wibbly freehand than I thought. What are the odds that my next attempt is worse?

Digga: Orks vs Beakies is surely not much of a challenge. When it comes to character, the little green men win hands down. Now, if only someone could come up with some sort of tabletop game where they can really do battle...

HHonestly for the first time it was a very fantastik attempt...not many folks can pull that off as a freehand article not to mention a first time go at it....my freehand has gotten better each time I've done a mini and there are tricks to apply the illustration and laying it down so Def check out baily03 connect the dots method and as I mentioned the reason mine got better on such things as tattoos ,shield designs etc is because I started it and like you gave it a shot, and another and another and another.....each time you'll develop steps to do them like applying the connect the dot method and fully making sure your highlights/shadows are fully done, even applying it in very diluted nature and with a bit of drying retardent mixed in (if you dont get a straight line or if you feel it's off center, you can wipe the illustration off because it will not have dried yet (great idea from skellete) all in all great job and stay with it,your gonna do well at this.:)

Okey-doke, here is attempt 2. Still blobby, but at least it's not all in massively outsized scale any more. Thanks for all your support and tips. This is a lovely corner of the internet.

Super good for your second attempt or I would say more (not a dupond and dupond from tintin) Super good!
The addition of that grid gives the cape a more 3D look I like it. And now it is much more proportional to the space it has!

You just need to thin it down a bit more next time and you will get it perfect lol I am scared, I'm going to try freehand on my mini at the anime contest and I shiver just thinking about it xD
