Nice little tute, never seen that approach.
another one is to coat wood or styrene with gypsum then before it just before it dries pat the area with foam from a miniature package. This technique works for architecture you want a better finish to.
yours looks perfect for the job.

I shall try that technique out too, Gandalf, thanks for the info.

So Koth-Yan's tusks are done. I think he's finished, all I have to do is the varnish mold line trick and affix him to a plinth.

The idea for the cracks in the tusks came about when I had a nasty wash ring and couldn't figure out how to fix it, I panicked a bit then decided to turn it into cracks.

I've grown to like this figure, though I suspect it's more to do with the work you have done. Tusks look good and a novel idea for the damage, you could have gone even further by snapping one tusk off halfway down. That may have been too much though.

I like gandalf's idea of a broken tusk I think it will give him more personality. Though I see the risks in doing so

A broken tusk would be a nice touch, but it's too late now because they're all painted haha. Plus they're metal so it would be hard to break them properly.

Hey Flu, What about pushing those highlights just a little more? Take a look at my photoshop:

Now I don't know that this is the exact thing to do, but you have all this great texture pointing to the eye. Why not highlight it a bit and lead people to that part of his face. I think it also helps to show volume on the trunk and tusk without too much more work. What do you think?

Demi, I didn't see your post since we must've posted at the exact same moment, haha. I think the lighting for my WIP shots might be playing a factor here, since I don't set up my lightbox and just rely on the overhead light. That said, I went over those spots again to try and really make them pop.

Began on the Queen of Barbary from Figone. Not a big fan of nude women minis, but this and the Queen of Death came with the book so I figured I'd paint them with what I learned from said book.

Lol, you people. Seriously though I'm not a big fan of overly sexualized female minis, hell this one even has pubic hair, that's a first for me.
Thanks, BAM, I'm really proud of that piece and I'm glad that other people like it as much as I do. Now if only more than 30 people could vote on it, haha.
