Started to work on some armor and weapons:

And here's the base. For the banner I'm really struggling with ideas. I thought about something Romanesque, Celtic knot work, middle ages European with lots of filigree, some kind of portrait. I wouldn't mind some input.

The skin looks great! Don't go celtic knot work I don't think it works with the fancy armour - something more ornate would work well I think.
Where is the mini from, I recognise it but can't remember where I saw it?

It was included in the Black Sailors kickstarter as a free gift, sculpted by Joaquin Palacios. Here's an update with some crappy photos, had to use my phone.

Hey Fluister! I agree with Quantum about the Celtic knot not beign a very good idea for this one...
Soooo ideas for the banner that crossed my mind when I saw your last advancements on the miniature are:
-A trident/fork
-Some Roman numbers... in fact the number XIII of that lost roman legion would be a nice idea
-Also some Roman/latin words would be great
-Some kind of mythological animal
-A bay leaves crown.
-A skull with a snake or something similar...

What do you think?

I looked up a lot of Roman standard/shield imagery to use and it gives a lot to choose from. I thought a lot about it yesterday and I had two solid ideas. Obviously this guy is modeled after a gladiator (though not historically accurate) so maybe he could be part of the Third Servile War and the banner could be a regular Roman standard that belonged to a group he just slaughtered. Or he could be some demonic gladiator unleashed on Rome's enemies, so I thought of the Persian Wars because they have a lot of intricate designs and patterns that can work. I also found a historical silk banner of the Sassanid Empire with their royal emblem that could be incorporated in:

I think the Roman banner idea is better though most Roman banners seem to be very square which could be a bit of a challenge given the shape of yours. From a quick google the three major themes seem to be the laurel, eagle, and S.P.Q.R. which should give you enough to fill out most of the banner and a nice choice of if you paint it NMM or a realistic style to get some more colour contrast into the mini

And for the base, I decided to go with a Roman flag, so the red base coat is down. I had to add a little to the base so when the guy is attached he isn't standing at a funky angle.

Oh! nice! If I half close the eyes I see the NMM like a shiny metal congratulations ^^

The skins is very nice too, although I would tone down the muscles at the side of the abs since they look like if he had a mutated 16 pack. This could also be a thing related to the lighting of the pic so check it out ;)

Maenas, I did go a little heavy with the highlight initially, I've been trying to tone it down. Part of the problem with the pic is the lighting but also the sculpt. He wasn't sculpted with a 6 pack but a 30 pack. He has one of those fantasy male barbarian bodies where the dude has muscles on top of muscles on top of muscles.

Great job on the sword and the archway the contrast there is great. It could just be me but does the red flag look to bright? Maybe dull it down a bit so it doesn't distract too much

LOOOL xD
I am sure you will solve the problem, just take care with the illumination when you take the final picture ;)

Great red there. Really intense, and those thin "golden" lines look very good too. Like how the banner binds with the textile on his left arm. ^^

Thanks, guys. Here's the last update, still some work to be done like shading on the banner and dirtying it up, finishing the bottom of the base and adding flock. But now it's time to get back to the octopus, got about 27 days to finish it before the contest.
