Thanks for the comments guys. Sorry for the lack of updates, I've been out of town for work and didn't get any painting done. I'm also busy this weekend so hopefully Monday I can get back in action.

Ole, I should get another one of these and convert him into the Black Knight with blood spurting out of the stumps.

Got time to paint today, so here's where the bust is at:

Much less creepy now that he has an arm, but I am in favour of the Black Knight version! :D

He looks great! Good skin on his face, maybe add some variations there to get him even more alive.

I know these busts are a bit bigger, but it's staggering how much expression you've gotten through on the face.

Oh yes, you can see from his face an eyes that the soldier's life has not been an easy one. Amazing work.

Thanks all! So the main body is done, I just need to build up the courage to do the 3 lions on the shield. Here he is all glued together and mounted on the base:

Thank you everyone, I'm glad you like this guy, I tried a lot of new techniques on him to really push my painting ability. I also tried to get a nice balance of shiny and flat materials, something I don't normally do. Usually I just finish a mini buy using matte varnish to make everything flat, but this time I kept the metals, leathers and wood glossy while the cloth is nice and flat.

Maenas: Thank you, I tried using Ben Komets technique from the PB Shield Maiden video. I started with a light orangey-brown and stippled/highlighted with RMS Dirty Bone, then put a few layers of Army Painter Soft Tone ink to get the leathery sheen, finally shaded with Sc75 Eclipse Grey to get the shadows nice and matte.

I'm loving the worn look throughout the model. Metal, cloth, face, just fantastic.

Thanks Meph. Alright, here's the rest of the shield freehand. Plenty of mistakes, but they'll be covered with blood and dirt. :D
And I've already covered most of the scratches because they looked bad.

Great stuff! I love how the colours work, seems like he was sent into the field with a brand new uniform, but now it is dirty from the fight.

10, Zab, Ole, thank you guys! The shield has been weathered and final pics taken. Sent them off to Figure Mentors for their comp, I believe that once I get the confirmation email I can post pics to my gallery. Maybe Bailey can correct me on that.

Looking to the future now: The next competition for me is MMSI in October, I'm bringing most of the models I brought to WME plus the bust I just finished and the French officer that's 50% complete. After that is Crystal Brush 2018! I have plans for a number of categories, but only have 2 of the models so far. The fantasy single I want to do hasn't been released to the general public yet (it was available at GenCon but I was not there) and the Dark Age squad I wanted to do has been out of stock for like 6 months (and it only came out 7 months ago!) CMON is really dropping the ball on their own game. Anyway, here are the two models I do have, for the bust and large scale categories:

I've been eyeing a number of minis for the Monster/Vehicle category but haven't made my mind up yet.
