A word from Victor Hardy

Who needs competition and trophies to prove how good they are at anything?!

Surely self satisfaction should be good enough? Or does that disappear when one acquires an ego?

lol

And I reckon GD will always be the biggest contest... GW will see to that! :D

I think that\'s her point exactly! Golden Demons in general aren\'t about creativity or being different no matter how well executed. It\'s about giving them what they want to see.

This isn\'t unique to Golden Demons and it\'s not unique to mini painting. I sing in a Barbershop Harmony Style chorus and quartet. We have a big collection of songs we love to sing, but when we have to compete, we are limited in what the judges will allow. More importantly, we have to limit ourselves to those songs we know the judges will like so we can get the best scores.

It\'s one of the reason why competitions of any kind ranking artist talent should always be taken with a grain of salt.

In that case, why do we have a football World Cup? The Ashes? Any sports at all?

Competition is good. It\'s a part of life:D

I actually think that it\'s MORE an indication of skill when you can adapt to outside conditions and still excel in your art. Anyone can do the same style model over and over 1000 times until they\'re good at it, but when asked to perform under a less than familiar set of rules, that\'s what really tests you.

It\'s so easy to just tear this stuff down with half-assed remarks, but they honestly are getting very boring, repetative and always seem generally ignorant and unthought through. If you don\'t like competitions, don\'t go, don\'t participate, we don\'t need to hear you don\'t like it every time it\'s brought up, or at least think up something new to say on the subject. :D

meh... whatever, american style will never win a UK sword, simply because it doesn\'t fit in with the way GW wants to portray it\'s product. Mike did \'create\' the bright style, but only because that was what GW wanted at that point, he was told to paint like that, just like all the other paint slaves GW has ever employed. I know for a fact that the whole of Eavy Metal in those days, including Mike, were throwing real strops for having to paint to cater to the camera, paint all the weapon shafts red, etc etc etc. Ok, now EM is famous for throwing strops, being underpaid and undervalued makes you a bit cynical ;)
On the point of other high level comps, I have always said that an unbiased high level competition is lacking from this hobby, even Euro Militaire is biased/sposored, and you won\'t even get a look in for the best of show golds if you enter anything but a historically correct mini, let alone a fantasy/sci fi one. Unfortunately, this market is too small to set up something like that without getting a corporate \'hand\' from the larger manufacturors, who in their turn will want to have a say in what get\'s judged higher.

And the damn CMON censor thing dropped the word f*ck from the sentence!

I can\'t type anything without fucking swearing these days!

As for this whole hoo har over \'American style\'... well... if it is exemplified by they way GW used to paint their models back in the 90\'s, then I hate it! Primary colours need to be kept in check sometimes.

Mind you... didn\'t think that OTT thing done by this Hardy fellow was particularly in that vein! It was just a case of toooooooooo much freehand and a banner that had sh*t all to do with 40k.

Wow EricJ. This sums it up perfectly. I have a friend who is very anti-NMM/SENMM. He does the samething over and over. When he sees some of my work where I am trying new painting techniques he calls me \"gay\" . I\'m just going to copy and paste part of your message.lol
