Thanks, everyone. It was a fun show and I was very pleased with how well received my work was. Meaty, I've got an illuminated lady coming when the Kickstarter delivers, I'm looking forward to painting that one!

Okay, on to the next project. Time has a habit of getting away from me so I wanted to get started early on my entries for the Crystal Brush competition. I'm hoping to bring a number of pieces but my focus will be on the historical categories. There's tough competition in fantasy and sci-fi and I've got to play to my strengths. This first figure is a knight of the Holy Sepulchre and, needless to say, I've got some big things planned (lots of freehand work). We'll just have to wait and see if I can pull it off. :smirk:

He's another 54mm mounted figure from Pegaso, like the Polish Lancer. I've put a lot of work into the face but haven't gotten much further than that.

Well, if the face is the measure for the rest, that one will be a hell of a mini!! You're not taking chances for the Crystal Brush.

Thanks, Kretcher, Alexandra, and Milosh.

Yeah, there's going to be a lot of white on this one. The box art has a big red cape... but the more research I do the more it seems like that should be white too. Oh well :)

Made a little more progress to the knight. I started working on some of the metallics. Not 100% happy, but I'll keep playing with them. I also made a few minor tweaks to the face. I made some adjustments to the right nostril and redid some of the highlights on the left side of the nose too.

I wanted to see how everything looked together (and make sure I was holding the figure at the right orientation for highlights and shadows) so I set him on the horse and slid the banner roughly into place. You'll have to imagine the rest of his cape and the shield hung around his shoulders, but you get the general idea of how this figure should look.

Figures for my second Crystal Brush entry arrived this weekend. I had originally planned to use the gladiators from the Arena Rex kickstarter for the competition but once that project was delayed I started to look for something else. I settled on a set of Roman figures from El Viejo Dragon. The set includes one female figure so Milosh, I'll get to try out your sheer painting tutorial. I also picked up an EVD figure based on the Doctore character from the Spartacus series. He should fit well with some of the other gladiator figures I have. Now, if I can just avoid getting distracted long enough to finish that knight...

Looking great sir, the face on this guy is really great. As I recall this is a seriously heavy figure. I know that female gladiator from EVD, she is pretty cool. Sounds like the CB project is going to be big.

Thanks, Meaty, Skels, and Milosh.

Skels, yeah, the helmet is really being a pain for me. I've spent some more time on it.... it might be a little better, but I'm still not happy. I think I'm going to have to put that part on hold, do more of the figure and revisit it later. Maybe I'll have better luck then!

Milosh, I was looking at the gladiator but ended up going with the Alexandria set (3 Romans and an Egyptian woman). The box art for the woman has her in the semi sheer dress so I'm going to give it a try. Since it's a bit intimidating I'll probably do the Romans first and save her for last.

I'm still frustrated with the helmet, but I'm going to step away from that for a bit. Started working on the whites. For his cape and sleeves I'm using Reaper's Bone Shadow, Weathered Stone, and Leather White. I mixed in a bit of Blackened Brown with the Bone Shadow for some of the deepest shadows. I didn't want the cloth to get too bright, so I've avoided using pure white. I'll probably go back over and pick out a few highlights with pure white once everything is together.

Hope everyone has been enjoying their holidays. Finding time to paint has been tough, but I've managed to work on a few projects. I've started on the banner for the knight. I'm not quite sure how I feel about it so I'd really appreciate any feedback people might have. I'm a bit limited in the design as it has to fit the knights of the holy sepulchre, therefore the red cross on the white background is pretty much required. I wanted to do a little more, so I put in a faint pattern into the white background. The whole thing still needs some clean up and a little more highlight and shading work. But I wanted to see what the reaction was before I go any further.

Not much more on the knight. Just a few touch ups and I primed the horse

Taking a break from that, I started on one of the figures for the Alexandria set (also for Crystal Brush). The set will be two legionnaires, a centurion, and an Egyptian woman. This is the first of the legionnaires. So far I've worked on the skin and armor. Just put a base on the clothing, which will be an off white. I'll do the centurion in red, but I figure the legionnaires aren't as well off so I'm giving them cheaper clothing. Of course he's still missing his shield and other hand... but I'll get to that later.

He doesn't wear the segmented armor that most people picture, but that is from the Roman Empire. This would be from around 50 BC, the time when Julius Caesar was in Egypt, so their equipment is a little different. This is actually the most accurate figure in the set. The helmet on the centurion is from a later date and the helmet on the other legionnaire is from a much much earlier date. So I've done a little converting to fix those issues.
