Bailey03, I've admired this figure for years, but always been shy of getting one as there's an awful load of work involved in him. However seeing you work in this one you're making me a Moth to a Candle, ...no fair.

Thanks, DR!

Yeah, this figure is definitely intimidating. But I think my lack of a plan actually helped keep me from getting overwhelmed. I looked at it, said I've got no clue what I want to do with it but I know this parts going to be metal so let's paint that. Then still wasn't sure where to go but figured that section had to be fur, so let's paint it that way. And so on. I had to take it one section at a time and not worry about everything else. I'm still unclear what I'm doing with the rest of the arms and legs but I'll deal with that after I finish what I know.

The swords were a bit tricky and I'm still working on them. For whatever reason I find the white metals far more difficult than the yellow metals. The blends seem a lot more finicky. They'll look fine then I'll tilt it to change the light and the transitions will be obvious. I'd like to get more light-dark variation especially on the right sword but I think I'll need to switch over to some glazes and inks to get there.

Same here with the white metals. Sometimes I just steal from a pro by looking at a similarly shaped weapon pointed at the same angle and duplicating the highlights. I think, though, you'd benefit from some contrast at the very tip of the blade. Your brightest highlight.

This guy has the feel of a Westerner serving as a military advisor in some exotic locale. The prevailing theme, IMO, is the artful merging of two contrasting cultures made to look natural by this man's wisdom and worldliness. And stuff.

Thanks, Meph and Milosh.

I started working on the banner designs for Sumothay. I'm sticking with an Asian/Samurai influence. The one on the left has only been sketched in. I didn't really plan it out (aside from googling some images for inspiration) so the borders on the right and left came out uneven. I'll tweak the dragons back to fix that and I've still got to add some shading like I did with the other banner. What do you all say? Do you think these designs work with this figure?

Man, I love following your WIP.

The polish hussar is very cool. I think you almost need to start painting in some flaws so people can see just how clean these guys are.

Sumothay is looking great! I love the dragon! the sun is cool too but maybe something more? Like a pictogram above and below? Or on it? What are you going to do for a base for this guy??? Diorama with these guys???:

Actually looks like a cool kit.

I have a question too. What do you do for mold lines on smooth concave surfaces?

Like the dragon banner but I'm not so sure about the other one. Maybe it's too simple compared with the rest of the mini... but I really don't have any other suggestion, so I might just shut up.

Yeah, it needs a little more, but i like how it mirrors all the circular shapes on the mini. Like the stone in the crown, the ring at the chest and the semi circle at the abdomen. Pictogram is a good idea or maybe mimc the piece at the abdomen: not a full circle, so more like a sunrise/sunset with crossed swords coming out of it.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. Yeah, I agree it needs something more. I originally thought about doing a vertical sword in front of or behind the circle (probably in a dark blue-black color). But the simplicity of the circle really reminded me of a samurai flag so I just left it there. However, after doing the dragon I think it needs something more to balance the two visually. So single vertical sword or two crossed swords would be easy enough to do. Part of me wants to try to do a dragon above and below the circle, like the very curvy Chinese style dragons but horizontal instead of vertical like the other one. However, with such limited space they'd have to be quite small and I'm worried they'd just end up looking like squiggles. That rising sun is another option.

As for the banner on the left I'm thinking I should also add something geometric to further help balance the two. Maybe a pair of horizontal lines at the top and bottom or a diagonal line behind the dragon. The lines would be in the same dark blue-black that I'll be using for the sword/dragon/whatever on the other banner.

Demihuman, I'm still trying to figure out the base. I've got the pedestal I want to use but not much beyond that. As for mold lines on a convex surface... I dunno, curse? One of the guys at my model group had this little tool I think he got from radio shack. It was a little stick with an abrasive square on the end. I think it was for removing burrs from circuit boards or something like that but he said it worked well for hard to reach mold lines on models. I didn't write down what it was called and I haven't been able to find it, but maybe you'll have more luck than I've had.

Just been looking at the image and an idea occurred to me, what about another circle being eclipsed by the first one.
Placed at roughly 1 o'clock and perhaps Black (ish) it could look like a second moon, and keep in with a fantasy theme.

yeah that would work.
personally i think the banner work as it is though, even if it isnt a super heavy freehand motive it does its job. again sweet job mate.

Yeah! I like how it really cements it as being 'oriental' while he is clearly not. It's really starting to tell a story.
