painting exact patterns like this is the hardest thing when it comes to minipainting imo, looking really good so far bailey. stay on target!

My hat's off to you, bailey. The fact that you can paint that and still present a semblance of sanity is just too much for my fragile mind to bear. I'll have to go frolick in a field of flowers now, seeing that it's also +-20 degrees (that's °, the only temperature that makes sense) in the second week of November, while normally we should be flirting with freezing by now...

Thanks, everyone. You know, you stare at something long enough and you start to second guess yourself. Hopefully I'll be done with the arm soon and can move on to second guessing the design for the orange cloth. =)

After two weeks of travel for work, I finally got a chance to do some painting again! I decided to take a break from the arm pattern and work on something else. Since I've finished the chest design, I realized I could add on the armor flaps over his chest and his other arm. The orange cloth is still a work in progress. I've finished the shadows, but only just begun the highlights. It's a pain painting the figure in so many different parts, but you can see how these pieces would have made painting the chest design a real nightmare.

OOverall place award winner......period...just knew you were one of the worlds graetest historical (anything really) painters...but I'm sure that I speak for all ,out of all your outstanding works ,this is just way way above even those.above those such as (the knight of the sepulcher, dragoon, white speaker ,goalie ,and even has risen above the olo fastfoot,"in the dark"...a professional box artist couldn't have done a job to compare to this, and I stand behind my thoughts.....out of this world excel.ent...the kind of piece that the minute you give it over to the judges their already floored by it and holding it in memory and have it placed already...this is truly so e thing to be proud of david..I'm even proud for you....

Thanks, Skel. Ha, yeah, I might be regretting my decision to paint a samurai... but suffering builds character. =)

Very kind of you to say, BAM. I think many of us (and especially those who paint for display and competition) hope to make each new project better than the last. This piece isn't finished yet, but I'd say I'm well on my way to accomplishing that goal. The only thing I wish this piece had was the narrative quality I got with the hobbit piece... but hey, maybe my next big project will bring that in too.

In case anyone is curious, here's one of the references I'm using as a basis for the figure. The sculpt very closely follows the guy on the right, at least in his look and equipment though not the pose. I liked the purple scheme for the armor so I kept that. Then I shifted to orange and green for the clothing colors to turn it into a triadic color scheme. I shared the box art on the last page and you can see it's a very busy sculpt, so I'm hoping if I limit the coloring to primarily those three colors (plus black and white) that will help the piece look more balanced. I guess we'll see whether or not it's successful as I keep adding pieces!

I think I shared one of these earlier in the process, but here's a link to the original photo of the figure (prior to resizing). Maybe it's just me, but there are a lot of times I really want to see bigger pictures of other people's work. I feel like if I could just get a closer look I'd be able to gain some insight into what they were doing and how they were doing it. CMON doesn't deal well with giant photos, so I'll just post a link and anyone who wants can take a look.

It's the large version of this one

You really get the feeling of creating something when you start to put the pieces together, it's a very satisfying experience, and with the quality of your work it must be even better.
I like that orange a lot, at the beginning I felt it a little strange, mainly because you are normally expecting two equal sleeves, but you can see it on the cover too, that it seemed usual to have two different sleeves. One for the arm drawing the arc and the other, with tighter textiles, to not disturb the arrow. So I will shut up and keep jawdropping with your mini xD

Thanks, Maenas. Yeah, I wasn't overly familiar with the samurai equipment when I started the project. The two sleeve thing threw me too, although I guess it makes sense. You don't want that big bulky sleeve interfering with the bow. The orange sleeve is on his left arm too, he just has this tight cover (the green part) over it. You can still see the orange below the arm and a tiny bit peaking out where the cover laces up.

On another topic, I was going to do some painting this afternoon and thought I'd setup a google hangout to share. If any of you have some free time and want some company while you paint, come join in. It'll be starting at 1 pm PST (a little less than 2 hrs from now).

Quick reminder - Adepticon registration opens today at 8 pm CST. There are a lot of great seminars and, with the limited number of seats, I'm sure many will fill up fast. I should also remind everyone that I'll be leading two sections on painting faces (April 1, 10-midnight and April 2, 5-7 pm).

Here is the link for registration. You can view and search through all of the seminars and games by clicking 'Event List' on the left of the page

Just had a look on it for curiosity and found that Schaumburg (where the event is held) is a city from Illinois USA not from Germany xD It could made things a little bit more easy for me to assist next year.
Anyway, thank you for sharing and hope you'll be getting a nice audience to follow your seminar.

Well, looks like all the spots for mine are gone. Looks like I won't be sitting in a room by myself after all! As I'm more of a historical painter I wasn't sure how interested Adepticon crowd would be, so I am definitely surprised to see all the spots taken.

I signed up for a few classes too. I got in on Ben's two brush blending, Kirill's blending with oils, and Angel's airbrushing masterclass. I've messed around with an airbrush a little, but essentially those are three techniques I'm a complete novice at. I'm excited to watch the experts do their thing!

Getting back to actual figures, I finished up the orange on the sleeve. Here's a side by side comparison. I feel like a see a lot of figures painted like the version on the left. Stuff that feels like shadow and midtone but no highlights. Yes, you can call anything lighter than the shadow a highlight... but in my opinion it's more about area/location where it's applied. If the highlights aren't concentrated in smaller and smaller areas, then they end up feeling like they're supposed to be the midtone.

Bummer. I though registration started the 30th. I will have to see what is still open when I get home tonight. (Already have rooms reserved ).

Btw, the Samurai is progressing nicely.

Hi Bailey,

The samurai is already looking fantastic. great freehands and superb warm orange!

I don't know if I'm right, but I always think like you find highlights only in exposed parts, while you find shadows on all parts, even on the highlight area's. i hope this kind of make sense, and would like to hear other's opinions about this. Might be that I have been "thinking" and painting completely all wrong for all these years.

cheers,

Thanks!

Yeah, quite a few classes are already sold out. I'm pretty sure all of Ben's, Kirill's, and Angel's are. But there are still seminars open. You can go to the event list and then advanced search to see everything in the hobby seminar category. I'd guess maybe half still have spots.

I think I know what you mean, Gino. We often talk about highlight, midtone, and shadow colors but it's a spectrum, we're really just referring to lighter or darker shades. In an area that's lit (where you're using mostly highlight colors), you can still have shadows but maybe they're created with a mix of midtone and highlight instead of the actual shadow color. And, while you may not have true highlights in a shaded area, you still have sections that are relatively lighter. It's just whether or not this shade darker or lighter than the surrounding color. We can get into all sorts of complexities of light and shadow... ambient light vs direct light, occulsion shadows, etc.

It is pretty scary taking a class and wondering if and what is going to happen, I bet your pretty relieved and excited so many are interested in your class. Great sleve work, yep you see a lot of shading and peps find it too scary or think it doesnt look natural to have the bright bright highlights. all you have to do it take the time to notice it in real life and its much easier aply it to scale. Great work.
