bgcdazzler's first ever mini WIP (a confusion of cockups and learnings)

BANGARANG! That is some awesome work. I think the grit on your sculpt really brought him to life and gave him that oh shit I'm on the run feel. And the tree is perfect. Very inspiring bud.

Now that's a cool base. And I can totally see the purple in it. Purple is a rock color, no doubt about it. I like the tree, too.

Thanks everyone- you're too nice.

Next step will include mushrooms and stuff, some more extreme highlighting here and there, a rock for Pig to hold onto, some grass (if it ever arrives in the post), yet more shading on Pig to blend him better into the scene, perhaps a bit of blood a la BaM, finishing Maulgy's boots, endless cups of tea, and... Oh god, lots more virtually invisible but still important to my eyes things.

But I'm going to have to learn how to make chain mail first. And armour.

My knowledge of fantasy stuff is pretty limited, but my thoughts on armour are as follows:

1. Orks: wear bashed together or looted lumps of stuff, quite crude and evil looking.
2. Humans: more sophisticated but quite plain, like mediaeval Knights, except for a bit of filigree if they are kings or noblemen or a bit fancy schmancy.
3. Dwarfs: master metalworkers, so finely made armour with decoration that's not fancy, exactly, but still detailed. Intricate patterns without being too flowery.
4. Elves: extremely flowery and decorative.

Do I have this right, would you say?

Thanks Digga, Arch. I knew your big brains wouldn't let me down.

Ahem...

if I could pick your brains on something else too?

Chainmail: what would a dwarf wear?

research and a bit of practice have led me to four possible Chainmail options I could do with your help choosing the best one for my dwarf's undershirt. What do you think? 1,2,3,4 or some other concoction?

cheers!

Well first off Dwarfs would laugh at normal chainmail and dawn some fancy mithril chainmail. Second I think your going to have a hard time finding mithril to sculpt with so good luck :p
Also I like number 1, 2 and 3 are interesting, and 4 looks elven.

Give him the elven looking one then. BAM! Now there's a backstory to the little fella ;)

I'm not sure I have enough materials to build a wardrobe for him to come out of - oh. Oh, I see what you meant now.

Am I right in thinking Mithril Chainmail looks like regular Chainmail but with smaller holes and a fancy brocade around the edge?

1) is clearly the most realistic (I know this, having made several suits of chain mail in my time), and should work well on the large scale.

Right then - option 1 it is (otherwise known as the hardest and most time-consuming; no surprises there)

Krule, you're right as always- I'll try to limit the spacing. Let's see how we get on tonight!

Of course its the most time consuming. That's the way of sculpting haha. Sam reason why my dragon is not done yet.

Yep, sorry Tero, #3 is just holes poked in using a paper clip and I made #4 up. #1 is chainmail from someone called MIKH (Scibor Miniatures I think?) and the 2nd is 'scale mail'... they're both from tutorials I found online (I can post links if anyone wants them).

So I played with it last night, and didn't like it much, so the armour piece I planned covers most of it up. Here it is so far:

You can see I've also lifted him up on a little plinth bit here: he's now exactly the same height as Sprogrot (but bigger in terms of girth and volume). More to do: fiddly armour details on that plain backplate, plus shoulders, plus a front bit, plus finishing off the beard.

Sigh. I hate chain mail.
