bgcdazzler's first ever mini WIP (a confusion of cockups and learnings)

Thanks WGS - good to know. I'm not an experienced enough painter to have a preference, so I'm looking forward to hearing feedback on how horrendous my models are to paint. Of course that means I'll have to cast some more...

I must read here more often, too much going on. I love the zombie, I'd totally paint something like that!

Ha, sorry Oistene - I do tend to jump around into different things.

Speaking of which...

I've started a new sculpt for the flesh faire sticky paintalong (which sounds thoroughly rude), and I wanted to share because it is quite different to the last few. Different species, different gender, and no maggots anywhere!

At the risk of sound in irredeemably sexist, women are so much more difficult than men/dwarves/orcs. I'm trying to convey emotion but without too many lines or wrinkles, and trying to avoid a mannish look. It's really tricky, but I'm pleased so far with the head/face.

I'm afraid I don't have any WIP pics up to this stage: it was just too hard to stop and shoot and risk losing the flow. Sorry!

Here she is with (hopefully) a sardonic little half smile.

you can possibly tell by the size of my sausagey fingers that her scale is much smaller than the zombie/dwarf etc - she's about half their size. This is because I'm thinking (only thinking, not definite) about making a full body for her. Not sure what or how or anything, apart from I know she can't have the usual basketball watermelon breasts. I'm aiming for natural, not anime.

Suggestions (no maggots please) welcome!

Looking good so far. I'd lower the defined edge of her non-smirking cheek as it's currently at the same level and shape as the raised side.

Female foreheads are more vertical than male ones. And females tend to have more rounded/arched eyebrows (like you've got here) and less prominent brow ridges. I'd also consider adding just a little bit of extra body to her lower lip in the middle.

To be clear: I do like what you've done. These are just random thoughts and suggestions if you're stuck for direction.

Thanks Arch, these are really useful tips. I've moved onto the body for the minute, but luckily all these tweaks can be done afterwards.

Sorry again for leaping about, but I did a few more coats on Sprogrot's face, just pushing the lighter colouring:

it's nice alternating between paint and sculpting!

Everytime I see you painting I just want to kick and scream until mine arrives lol. It's looking so good. Great start on the female head. You are right the female is a lot harder to sculpt. Also she kind of looks like Margery off of game of thrones.

Damn fine painting on that ork. I would have trouble getting nice desaturated tones like that. It's one of many reasons I have never painted an ork. I once did okay on a giant squig sculpted by this other awesome artist though :)

Pshhht! Just alright my ass. Lol. Besides, I can't get desaturated tones like that either and I still try to paint orks.

Sprogrot is looking very good. As
you pick out the highlights on the right side of his face it's really starting to build depth.

Really advanced colouring on sprogrot imo... I think you have levelled up even further since your violet-red demon.

That women face/body will be a great step to jump, looking forward on how it develops.

I stumbled across this WIP page and thought the Erik Larsen's She Dragon Statue pics might be if some use when you need to work on your lady's body.

Hope they're helpful!

Edit: Fixed broken URL.

Got a (not so) little present in my mailbox today. Don't want to spoil it for those whose did not arrive yet, so no fotos! Digganob (da Ork!) is here and he's goin' to stay, boyz'n'girlz! All ears intakt. I am not going to modify this one except for one little subtle bit which came immediately to my mind. Two bigger airbubbles to fix, but that's ok. Sculpt looks beautiful and pretty detailed. The fur is going to be a pita to paint for its very deep structure. The gap on his neck under the helmet is pretty deep as well. Reaching in there with a brush is going to be trouble. I didn't think one could cast such a large undercut. Didn't it rip your mold?

Mr Dazzler, I am very happy and grateful for this beautiful and very special present. If you ever do cast more of your stuff, please let me know. This is awesome. YOU are awesome! Thank you.

My pleasure Schwarz-Brot. I hope he's fun to paint up.

Yes, one thing I've learned is not to make such difficult to reach places with the brush! Sorry about that.

Oh, and your note is going to hugely annoy Digga. :) Digga: Germany is nearer than Florida. Patience, Padawan - he's on his way!

And South Africa is even further away (roughly 1000 miles more according to Google Maps) plus we have a less than stellar postal service. Comfort yourself with these thoughts Digga. :p

Your Sprogrot is looking awesome, glad you're painting him up before me, it helps me see what's what, I've got too many projects on the go so Sprogrot still in the prep stages at the moment but I'm thinking of making him a blood bowl fan because there's an orc team called the gauged eyes and after seeing his eye that's what came to mind :p

Dazzler, the paint you've put onto Sprogs looks great. I'm loving the color contrasts.
You doing wet-in-wet or what on that skin? It looks great.

Thanks Saint. No, it's just a bunch of thin layers and strokes of different colours, one atop the other. I've done the eye, so here's more of a closeup where you can see all the strokes.

Here he is so far (a few more bits added). The top isn't going to be that sickly yellow, it'll be dirtier than that I think.

The eye so far. Here you can see some of the different colours in there, particularly in the upper lip. There's a mix of greens, yellows, red/purple, blue, black, and brown. Basically everything!

Little spots on his forehead. I thought they might look cool but I'm not sure now, maybe I'll go over them with some green:

edit: and here's a shot of the damaged side. You can see on this cheek that I haven't yet done the green: it's just based in green and with a few layers of brown and purple. Still a lot to do. I'm also trying to figure out how to do the damaged eyeball... with no lightbulb moments so far.

And then the lady hasn't changed much, just an armature and sizing her body. Arch, those links you sent were really useful for this bit so thanks for them!
