Thanks for saving me from the oft-travelled road of insanity, ten.

Having said that....

here red it is slightly less mad. Better scale?

In a sense yes this is better scale, how does he get up there, stairs being added or a grappling hook with attached rope hanging down to the ground?

NNow this is something that while really daring and impressive it might take "everything " away from all that hard work you've put into maulg the king...;))

Hmmm, I would not do it unless everything on that huge base is going to point directly to the king and make him stand out more. That said, why build a base that big to just push it into the background. It's ambitious, but may not be the best way to showcase the nice work you have done on him.

I was going to say that I would see him on a super small base instead of a super large because you want to keep the focus on the wonderful work you've put in him. By putting him on a large base it's like what Zab said "you push him far away into the back ground"

That's an interesting point, Tero, and it leaves me in a bit of a quandary. My idea is that his pose is sort of like someone looking out over a great view, so I want him up high. Kretcher's point about showing how he got up there is valid too - so there would need to be enough info in the base to make it 'real'.

I'll the high base one more try today and see how it goes, but may have to give it up...

200 posts!

Continuing my celebrations of a picture after every hundred posts... We're now past 200. Yay! Thanks everyone.

Ten ball had the (dubious) honour of writing post 200. In it he mentions how he applauds 'out of the box thinking'... so this one's for you ten.

That picture is awesome. I agree with the consensus of making the base smaller. To make him appear high up you could do an angled jutting rock face. Or try a steeple of a church or castle.

My pleasure, ten. Arch: keep posting!

More painting pics below, plus my latest thoughts on a tall base with steps. If this scale doesn't work I'll have to rethink the whole thing...

I've given the eye a little highlight - blimey, that was hard - and started preliminary work on the legs.

Also so tweaked the beard and the bling, the fingernails and smoothed some more of the skin.

+1 to all others, I agree with them all. Also I saw you added some "freckles" to the upper part of his leg that's a great addition. His backside has improved lots, good choice on the snakey pattern. I just felt that your second approach was a bit too rectangular and regular, but now it looks much better.

Congratulations also on your 200 posts on this thread ;)

Now I see you posted while I was writing... though it's better than before I still feel it's a bit big. I still would cut it in half. You don't need a big base to imply that he is standing on a high place.

I'm with Maenas on this one. The newer version is much better and more interesting, but still too high. Halving it (at least) would still give an impression of height while not distracting from the cool paintjob.

Moving on from the base at the moment...

A tiny update today on Maulgy (been inundated with Xmas parties, ugh). I've worked up some patterns and motifs on his bling. Sorry the photos are terrible.

also: remember this dude? I've had a go at some slime effects on his tentacles, mouth hand and right shoulder pincer thing. I've also darkened the whole base and given it purple undertones in the shadows (not that you can tell on here - God, I hope I get a decent camera for Christmas).

This is my first slime attempt, and I think it's okay, but let me know if you don't approve...

The ones on the last pic look very good ^^
I also like the way you are doing on Maulg, very detailed painting. Wouldn't you glaze a bit more his tatoo into the skin tone?? I find it is a bit too dark. But that it's just an opinion so take it lightly. ;)
