Thanks all - still not happy so going to give it another go tomorrow night. I've just treated myself to some new brushes - As the strokes are just too thick for my taste.

@Arch: great idea! I'm tempted to have a crack at the four horsemen at some point. In the meantime I'd love to see what you do with pestilence - I can't quite picture him as a Chibi... :)

I'm trying my hand at non-chibi sculpting :). We'll just have to see if I succeed. But I am aiming to reflect some of the glee that the Nurgle sculpts have.

Wow, such quick progress. Do you sleep? I love the start on the dwarf, and am really impressed with the quality in such a short time. When I sculpt (or paint for that matter) I'm always painfully slow. :(
I agree with everyone else, this go at the nmm looks much better. You're getting there.

@Arch: a nurgly pestilence sounds perfect. Embrace your inner ick!

@Khavor: ha, nope, I don't sleep much. There's just too much to do! I'm now thinking of Tmm rather than nmm, but we shall see...

in in the meantime... New brushes! Yay!

He doesn't need sleep, just somewhere he can plug in to recharge his battery :p

awesome work on the nmm, it's looking much better than the previous attempts. if you're struggling a lot maybe find a piece of metal in similar shade and shinyness that you want and study the hell out of it (either online or irl). that is what i do whenever i get stuck.

great progress on the dwarf. it'll be awesome to see him fully sculpted.

also have fun with those shiny new brushes!! the series 7 are absolutely fantastic!

I need to take my Series 7 miniature brushes that I bought for myself earlier in the year for a test drive. Dragon was too big and I've been saving them for a personal project.

Sooo... I gave up on the nmm. :(

In my defence, I will say that the closer I got to neatening it, the more out of place it looked on this figure. Almost cartoonish - he was starting to look like an elvish superman.

So I went back to good ol' metallics, and added some patterning. Also changed to a more weathered greenish colour, which seems more elf like to me.

More to to do on neatening and bringing out the pattern, but here is tonight's session:

ps: that's not to say I won't give nmm another go. I'm determined to get it right - I just think I need to make something more cartoonish in style to practice on.

Hey man, you learned and moved on to try again. Nothing wrong with that at all and he still came out awesome.

I think you made the right choice. Guys like ten ball and Skels can make NMM look good and natural, but in general I'm not a fan because it makes everything look plastic imho. It definitely has its place in a painter's arsenal, but a different mini would probably suit it better. Hey, you could always have a go at sculpting a chibi warrior to try it out on. :D :D

hard luck about the nmm, but the tmm is looking fantastic! really digging the patterns you've drawn on the armor. enough to give the main body some attention but subtle enough to keep your eyes on that fantastic cloak.

speaking of the cloak,i'm curious as to how you tackled it. did you have a rough/refined idea in your head when you started or did you just start putting paint onto the mini and followed your brush?

Phew! Glad you all approve.

@Tero: ha! Not a chance. These new brushes are lovely. Besides, if you can do nmm then the metal gods need appeasing by someone... If not you, then who else? :)

@Digga: thanks, man. I'll definitely keep surfing that big ol' learning curve.

@Arch: hmm... A Chibi. I'm not sure I can do it, to be honest; I guess I could give it a try. I already know what my next 4 sculpts are going to be - I can see a couple of them quite clearly in my head - but I'll add a Chibi to the list.

@Saint: great to see you around, sir. :)

@meaty: thank you. To be totally honest I'm 50/50 about the cloak. I'm glad everyone seems to like it, but I think I can do it so much better - I wobble between wanting to paint over the bloomin' thing and start again, and leaving it and making the next one better.

If if it helps, when I tackled it I had a mix of a plan in my head for certain bits, then randomness for the rest. I knew I wanted an eagle in the middle to match his shoulder decoration, and flowers to match the flower on his shoulder too. So I painted the eagle first in a creamy yellow, and roses in both bottom corners. Then the pattern down the middle so it was symmetrical, and then randomly filled the rest with vines and curls.

Next I went over the pattern with a bit of dark brown, building up layers to add depth, then went over it all again with cream. Then finally stippled little details in between all the elements in cream and brown, then washed the whole thing in various shades of purple, red, brown, yellow and black. Then I rehighlighted with an off white, and washed it some more.

I probably should've done a SBS for it, but it came together quite quickly and, uh, I forgot.
