I personally think dreams and goals are what inspire us to our own levels of greatness. Schwarz-Brot makes an excellent point about finding balance between being serious about the work and still enjoying what you do. I personally think that the enjoyment informs the technical aspects and brings life to whatever you're working on.

So go for your dreams Dazz - we've got you covered my friend.

Thanks everyone for your support.

Didn't do much last night - just added another hand to the dwarf and made another armature. Hands just don't get easier, do they?

I'm now planning my first 'proper' sculpt too. It's going to be an exhausted warrior extricating themselves from the jaws of a dragon's severed head. (It makes sense in my head at least.) My question: would you all prefer it as a warrior boy or warrior girl?

I think that that sounds epic! I approve with enthusiasm and pom-poms!

To be honest it doesn't matter to me which gender you go for. It's the piece as a whole that will interest me. Are you going to stay small or go a bit bigger in scale? I never seem to be able to keep my projects little.

I have some personal thoughts on that matter... I was very ambitious when I was into painting a few years ago. This was one part that killed the fun in it for me. I was not able to mentally step back from my too high goals. Then I got frustrated and looked into gaming miniatures but never found a real group to play. Also, it would take me days to get a gaming mini done. That was another reason to leave my brushes alone. I simply felt I wouldn't ever be able to reach my goals. I never lost the hobby completely out of sight. Always peeked at GWs display armies when I came along a store and sometimes visited my old forums to take a look at the galleries. When it hit me again I started completely different. My goal now is to complete minis in a timely manner to a standard I am happy with, knowing there is always stuff that can be done better. In the last few weeks I improved my painting way more than in all the time trying to figure out the best techniques before I left the hobby. Most important - I painted way more miniatures in a few weeks than in all the time before. The Zombies are dipped, but still looking absolutely gorgeous for being played with. So why should I care. There it is, the joy of painting.

So if you ever encounter that kind of frustration along the way, I know exactly what you are going through. I feel you have way more talent than I do and you probably have a stronger ambition than I do. You can reach your goal, maybe in a year, maybe in five, who cares? Just be able to take a step back and do some fun stuff, ignoring your ambition from time to time. And feel free to talk to me about it. I'll hear you. There are ways to force fun stuff, like little fun challenges and stuff like exchanges to cheer you up and distract from the main projects.

Please, DO NOT GET LOST along the way.


Edit: I am sure people like Arch, Tero, Digga and all the other nice fellows will be there as well.

I completely agree with the words above. Take care Dazz go up we are here for you to not fall. !!!

I will try to help you out with all my criticism if I can. ;)

Oh! And a girl would be more than epic!

I can relate to scwarz-brots post, when I was a teenager I wanted to go into the music industry so I went to college with my guitar where we were expected to practice playing 6 hours a day on top of a 2 hour guitar lesson and another hour rehearsing for the practical test (playing in a group made from classmates in front of the rest of the classes) after 9 hours total from all that I found I never wanted to just play for fun anymore, it put me off playing at all for a few years, I left college after the first year

In your case though you have more leeway, at the moment you can sculpt what you like whenever you have time which helps keep it fun and interesting, I am confident you can make it to a top level sculpter with practice, just try not to lose the fun along the way :)

Comp and things alike do turn things out diff,after achieving a technical level worthy of "crystal brush" is sometimes saddened by you no longer see the fun in a painted model all you see are the technical mistakes that stand out and need to be fixed...winning becomes a demanding job cause in reality,first you want to make the cuts,then that's no longer good enough,then you want to place third,no longer good enough,so on and so fourth...I no longer enjoy painting just to paint.i paint to compete and ts a full time job...I am prepared if I lose ,it will be an unhappy endeavor for me ,but the chance to win and impress high caliber judges is what I'm looking to do....if this is what you want ,the fun will be diminished,but there is no better feeling than being able to stand among all those great world class artists.....

GO FOR IT.

Thanks everyone. BaM, your words struck a chord with me, because this describes me in my career - I've worked hard and am now moderately successful, but get no enjoyment out of it.

I'm a self-critical person, so even now with my 'just for fun' stuff I don't enjoy it, per se. I get satisfaction from the sheer mindlessness of sculpting or painting (that feeling you get where you paint and don't notice two hours have gone by). And I am superficially pleased if my latest thing is an advancement over my last thing, born of a constant desire to improve whether I'm sculpting, working or poaching an egg. Yes, I'm pretty exhausting to live with. So in this way I'm not afraid of losing 'the fun'.

I I guess wanting to push harder has always been my desire; until I saw all those beautiful CB entries I just didn't have a focus for that desire. Now I do.

Some great advice being passed out here and lofty goals you are setting for yourself. The only thing I can add is you keep getting better and better with each effort (the painting on the elf and the sculpting on the dwarfe are your best to date) and appear to have the potential to achieve your goals. Just remember your online family is here to support (and sometime abuse) you along the way.

A Monkey Warrior.......if no one else jumps on board with this idea then I change my vote to the lady warrior.....this actually gives me a great idea of my own...i revoke my monkey warrior idea. You can;t have it, ITS MINE ALL MINE!

well, it is a ladie's face, just not the one dazz was expecting to practice.

and diggs, the best things are things you don't expect. i'm sure dazz will have a great deal of fun with this one should they choose to accept it!
