bgcdazzler's first ever mini WIP (a confusion of cockups and learnings)

Bottom left in my opinion. And I'd possibly make the plain section of the cloak a different shade - possibly the maroon you've used behind the "scales".

bottom left for me as well. as cool as the designs would be i think it'll distract from the main freehand a little too much, plus it's less work for you

I have to agree with everyone else, bottom left. Even if you wanted to add the designs you should paint the scales like that first. What if you painted them all red (with the bottom left technique) but then do something different for a stripe near the bottom of the cloak?

Thanks everyone. I had every intention of following your advice (and still do), but when I painted over the pattern it looked curiously like little flames. I thought the effect was quite nice so did it over the rest then glazed over in red. I'll still add the contrast, or maybe edge each scale in gold?

and I like your idea khavor, a stripe of golden scales might be nice - or a stripe with gold brocade on, at least...

in in other news I primed the demon and he doesn't look too well. There's a nasty mouldlines that obscures his right nostril, and some of the detail is gone. Not worried about the bubbles as it was a quick test, but the rest? Hmm...

That cape is looking solid. I like the flame/shimmer effect you have going on with it. Unfortunatly I don't have much advice to give in the painting department as you have past the point I would call it good :) As for the demon, I am not seeing the nasty mold lines...

i agree with digg on the cape. awesome look there. i'd say push the contrast rather than edge with gold, or the gold could outshine your loveley effect!

as for the bust, i still would like one if possible. even with the loss of detail that sculpt is too good not to paint up

Ooh flames. They look very effective. :good: I'm really not feeling the gold idea. How about a stripe along the lower edge of the upper cloak (unpatterned) which I still think should be in a darker shade of red. But, as always, just one opinion of many.

The flame effect on the cape is awesome. Only thing is suggest is a little green /blue in the shadows the accentuate the contrast.

i think arch is onto something here dazz. the line of gold would help the breakup of the red nicely as well as tie in the armor colours

Thanks everyone, some really useful tips. Tonight was a paint session, but I did so many other fixes to other bits I never made a decision about the gold.

First here's the scales. It's really quite difficult to get so much contrast with red, isn't it? The blue in the shadows helped, but do I need to do more?

and here's a view of all the other bits. The most obvious change is a repaint (again!) of the armour. I decided to do it as leather armour - the brown goes better with the green, I think. Not sure what the white dots are going to become, yet.

And a couple more views: touched up the green, the hand, the shoulder pauldrons, and a bunch of other stuff like the badge and flower.

Your elf is looking very cool.

And yay for War being fixed! (Boo for no mold, but I'm happier that the original was saved). Now when Pestilence arrives (hopefully in one piece and soon) he'll have company.

Thanks both. I'm going to take him one copy at a time, fix and greenstuff each one, and see how many copies I can get before the mold gives up the ghost. I'll keep y'all posted.

In other news, I just got my Salute ticket for tomorrow. I've never been to one of these big shows before: anyone have any advice? Are there any must-see/must-do things I should look out for? And just how scared should my credit card be? :)

Enjoy Salute! Try to hook up with Dragonsreach, ten ball, AndyG and company. And I know WGS is going to be there manning his stall.

Be afraid of WGS, he will smite you down if your credit card is maxed before you reach his booth :p lol. I have never been but I figured that sounds like good advice.

The best advice I can give - do not take your credit card there! ;)

Well, I am a bit jealous. Would love being at salute.
Visit the Infamy booth and see if they still have the one shot goblin. If so, take a look and be impressed by the insane amount of detail in the sculpt. It is absolutely stunning. Their gaming miniatures may be of interest as well, if you are into steampunk. There are some gems hidden in their line. I don't know about other companies around there but it is always a good idea to see who's there and make a plan what you really want to see. Take a bit care to see everything you planned. It is just too easy to chat all day with all the awesome people you may meet there and not seeing anything in the end.

A comfortable backpack, a bottle of water and two strong cotton bags as backup. A light camera for remembering (stealing) ideas and taking quick pictures of companies names to remember (faster than taking notes. Your phone would work as well). That's what I usually take to any fair I visit. Phonenumbers of other visitors you plan to meet.

Completely unrelated - you should receive my mail about monday or tuesday I guess. Got it posted yesterday.

Have fun at Salute! I expect you're going to have a great time and come back inspired.

If you aren't fed up with working on the cloak yet, you can mix a little white or bone into the red and go ahead and highlight it up to a pink (be careful, a little goes a long way), then glaze the whole thing back to red.
